Dimension just picked up the rights to the Duke Nukem movie. Here's the article from Variety. They insinuate that the Mortal Kombat franchise has returns of $4 billion in all media. Duke Nukem returns of $1 billion! What the heck? No way they're that popular. Especially Duke. There have only been games and action figures, right?

'DUKE NUKEM' & DIMENSION GO TO MOVIES

Violent vidgame to be made for PG-13 auds

By JONATHAN BING

NEW YORK -- Duke Nukem, the muscle-bound hero of one of the PC gaming industry's most popular and violent titles, may soon burst onto the bigscreen.

Dimension has acquired "Duke Nukem: The Movie," a project based on the vidgame franchise that's already generated nearly $1 billion, from multimedia giant Threshold Entertainment.

"Duke Nukem" is a hyperkinetic, shoot-'em-up vidgame that, like "Quake" and "Doom," has come under fire from Washington for its high quotient of blood, sex and gore. But Dimension plans to develop the pic so it meets the requirements of a PG-13 rating.

Set deep in space, pic will center on Duke's efforts to defend the planet from an extraterrestrial ship on a collision course with Earth.

Threshold Entertainment CEO Larry Kasanoff, co-founder and former prexy of James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment, will produce the pic.

As producer of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise -- a $4 billion brand --in all media, Kasanoff helped lay the foundations for Hollywood's interest in the vidgame biz.

Dimension director of production and development Ken Park and Threshold acquisitions and development veep Leon Fan brought "Duke Nukem: The Movie" into Dimension.

Park and Dimension production co-heads Andrew Rona and Brad Weston will oversee the project.

remember, DUKE NUKEM, before he became his character was one of the better generations of games at its time when it was a simple side scroller. that helped kick in the amount it has going.
