Re: Final Fantasy XVI PlayStation 5 6/22/23

Reviews are dropping.

Kotaku:
A bold shift to action and a stirring fantasy tale make this the best Final Fantasy in ages.
Screen Rant:
A "modern masterpiece,"finalfantasyxvi is a game that contends not just with the best in its series, but the best in its genre. Our 5/5 review of an instant GOTY contender
IGN:
With fast, reflex driven, action heavy combat, Final Fantasy 16 is certainly a departure from what fans may expect out of a Final Fantasy game, but its excellent story, characters, and world are right up there with the best of the series.
Polygon apparently didn't like the story:
Final Fantasy 16 would be one of the best games ever — if its story wasn’t terrible

Yeah it's crazy because Kotaku absolutely raved about the story and then Polygon said it was terrible.

Well it seems like it's coming out on XBOX Decemberish and an unspecified time for PC, I'll be trying it out eventually on PC, may have to wait a year. Really good word of mouth, though.

It says no other platforms before December 31, 2023. I don't think that means it's coming to Xbox "Decemberish". But it will come sometime, probably within a year.

Okay after reading reviews I bought the game. Pre Loaded and ready to play all night .

This and Starfield will be the only two games I'm looking forward to this year

Yep, they're awesome. They also have 4K discs for rent and have some great sales on used 4K discs and games, etc.

I used to use Gamefly for short 6-8 hour long games but using it on a 70-100 hour game is bizarre to me.

I rent and buy 4K discs from them. I'm also given the option of buying the games outright and they send a lot of coupons. It's how ended up with Diablo 4 day 1 for $42. I don't doubt they'll offer a sweet deal for FF16, so here's hoping it's a good game, as well.

I used Gamefly back in maybe 2009 or so… I honestly had no idea that it still exists today. I do still use a mail service for 4K discs (3DBluray.com), but much like Netflix back in the day, I still have the same discs sitting gathering dust for a few months, yet I still pay the monthly bill.

This game is fantastic. Already at level 22 and about 10 hours in. When I first heard Joshua's voice I was like that sounds exactly like the little brother from the Plague Tale games and then you hear Jill's voice and I was like that sounds exactly like the sister in the Plague Tale games and sure enough that's who they both were.

Up to level 41. Combat is super fun but I hope the game has a bunch of extra content to find like all FF games should have. Wish there was a bit more to the gear system.

Yea, combat here is pretty satisfying and there are some epic battles so far (Level 26 or so). Some of the in-between though seems to drag a bit, and the sidequests so far are pretty mediocre and tedious.

I'm just getting started but the music, setting, characters + their design, and gameplay are already much improved from the last entry.

The beginning/intro of the game ran far longer than I think it needed to but in general it's good stuff.

All thanks to the amazing team that's been heading FF14 for a decade now. Soken (musical producer) is a genius.

Yeah, it seems more confident and better put together than the franchise has in a while. Wish there was a rewind function for a few clips.

I love it. But there are some gripes. Upgrading weapons seems pointless. I crafted a purple sword and five minutes later bought a better one at a store. Can I only hold 4 potions? I wish there was more RPG elements.

Re: Final Fantasy XVI PlayStation 5 6/22/23

You’ll be able to upgrade how many potions you can hold twice via side stories.

Agree about weapons. Excalibur is usually a top tier, hard to get weapon in FF games. I used it for like 3 hours before something better was available. It wasn’t even far into the game.

Re: Final Fantasy XVI PlayStation 5 6/22/23

I agree about the lack of RPG aspects, seems weird that Soulsborne has more RPG elements than a legacy franchise like Final Fantasy.

That said, it is a ton of fun so far which I haven't felt toward an FF game in ages.

Re: Final Fantasy XVI PlayStation 5 6/22/23

Yep. Best main line game since 12, IMO. I know 12 is a love/hate scenario for most people but it's one of my favorite games of all time.

I haven't looked up anything about the later game but I really hope there's more than just the hunt board. I'm probably getting close to the end of the story. There's one summon left for me to get based on the abilities screen and how they circle around your main skills.

The

Titan

fight that was three phases was probably the craziest and coolest battle I’ve ever played.

I keep hoping I’ll find a speed upgrade. I think Clive is running in quicksand
