Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

My digital version was ready at 9pm last night so I've already put a few hours into it. It's exactly what I wanted out of a Ratchet game so far.

Like most games if you're trying to speed run it than sure but the average playtime for a normal playthrough exploring and actually enjoying the game then it's more like 15-16.

Just started it and it’s glorious. Love the Dual Sense integration. Feels so perfect. I’m very early but it’s just what I was hoping for.

I'm around 9-10 hours in and at like 65% complete according to my save file. Fantastic game and easily the best in the series.

Just wrapped it up this morning. A fantastic love letter to the series and a great starting point for new players. Rivet and KIT are wonderful characters and their storyline fits in well with the existing Ratchet & Clank universe. I love where it ends and what they are hinting at going forward.

I’m having such a blast. So fun and engaging. Looks amazing. Like how the Dual Sense is integrated, especially for bombs. Pulling halfway down to aim and fully to launch. It’s such a good and intuitive system.

You finished it in less than two days? I’m about 12% done it seems. Got it Friday morning.

I'm super-early in it myself, but from what everyone's saying, the whole thing -- platinuming, even! -- can be done in 2 or 3 lengthy sessions.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

Just a quick PSA, if you miss the gold bolt that’s on a platform under the dome near the landing area on Cordelion, don’t try to go back and get it after you’ve played through the story for that planet. It’s basically a dead end that shuts you out of being able to get back to your ship. I spent about 20 minutes trying to get out of the area, then the screen went white/purple around Ratchet and all I could control was the camera. That, in turn, ended up locking up the console and I had to do a hard reboot, which thankfully didn’t result in any lost save data.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

Overall I'm loving it but the weapons are kinda 'meh this time out. Zipping through the rifts are fun, the few I've ran across. Rivet's first level (Sargasso?) was a bit long in the tooth. Riding around those beetles got old pretty quick. I still have a couple things to find but I had to bail on that level and moved on.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

Anyone started Challenge mode yet? I finished up my first playthrough last night with 99% completion and almost all my guns maxed at level 5. I decided to hop in and check out challenge mode, but it crashed my PS5 twice within the first 10 minutes.

As for impressions, I like the game a lot, but am not sure where I’d rank it in the series. Definitely higher than the PS4 remake/reimagining. It’s easily the prettiest game in the series and is a nice showcase of the PS5’s capabilities.

This is my first PS5 game so I have no idea how well most developers are taking advantage of the haptic feedback in the controller, but I really liked it here. It chews through battery life, but definitely adds to the immersion.

As always, the weapons are a lot of fun. If you power them up, they’re almost game breaking on normal difficulty. Whatever you’re facing, if you lob out a couple topiary sprinklers, then add some agents of doom and a couple Mr/Mrs Fungi, you can pretty much just sit back and watch the destruction.

That explains it. With two kids, I forgot what lengthy sessions are lol.

I only futzed around with Challenge mode very briefly (just long enough to get the last couple of trophies), but yeah, it crashed immediately when I tried to change from Fidelity to Performance mode, and that was with the latest page.

I have to admit that it took me a few hours to really get into it. I liked it from the start, but it didn't have that immediate hold on me that so many other entries in the franchise have. But whereas my first couple of days of playing were slow and leisurely, just knocking out a planet or two at a time, it pretty much consumed every waking hour after that. I really like Rivet and Kit, and I'd love to see a Miles Morales-style side title with them at some point. It's the single most beautiful game I think I've ever played, the writing and performances are strong, and it's such a love letter to my favorite video game series, but I don't know that I'd rank it above Crack in Time or maybe even Tools of Destruction.

I might be misremembering previous games through rose-colored glasses, but I didn't think the arsenal overall was as creative as previous games in the series. What we've gotten is plenty powerful, though! And I'm excited to see how devastating they all are on my second playthrough. I didn't take advantage of that as much as I would've otherwise just because I was so focused on maxing out all my weapons, so once I'd gotten the most powerful ones built up, I only really came back to them when I ran out of ammo on my newest toys.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

Anyone experience any glitches? I've had two in the past few days.

First, I bought the Cold Snap weapon from Ms. Zurkon for 20k bolts (or however much it was) and it didn't unlock. She took the bolts but I didn't get the weapon. It still says locked and has ever since. I played a couple hours and it still hasn't unlocked to rebuy. Super annoying.

Second, the game froze and started emitting a high pitched noise through my receiver. I pulled the HDMI and plugged it back in. Still frozen and noise still going. The power button wouldn't kill the system so I had to yank the power cord. That finally did the trick.

Nope it was flawless for me. The rarest of rare games for me - I got the platinum-trophy on this one.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

I had a handful of issues. My previously mentioned lock-up on Cordelion seemed to permanently screw up the planet for me. On my 2nd & 3rd playthroughs, when I finished the linear part of the level, I exited to find my ship floating in thin air. I would try to jump to it and fall into nothing, but after I died I respawned with the platform having reappeared.

I also had the game lock up a couple other times, requiring me to turn off the console, and it quit and booted me to the home screen maybe ten times in three playthroughs. No issues specific to weapons though.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

The game completely died when I tried to start New Game Plus in Performance mode. I ran into an issue where one of the arena challenges would just immediately throw me through the floor, I'd fall for a really long time, and eventually die -- and this happened over and over and over. I had an issue with anti-aliasing being disabled when I came back from Sleep Mode, but I understand that's been patched. There might've been other issues, but those are the ones that stick out in my head.

My wife's well into her 2nd playthrough, and I haven't seen anything crazy happen so far, so maybe the patches are working.

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

I'm curious, when you guys are running into issues is it after resuming from Rest mode? I'm about to start this one up so I'm not saying that's the issue here, but it was definitely my experience with the last title I played through which saw two full system freezes, a game crash and definite performance hiccups (that went away after a formal restart, but the framerate would literally drop in half at times with only a little bit of onscreen chaos).

Re: RATCHET & CLANK: Rift Apart - PS5 - 6/11/21

I use rest mode, but my two instances don't seem related as I had been playing for awhile. The freeze was probably an hour into playing. The weapon glitch seems random as hell and a game based glitch vs. system based.

I'd be pissed if I had a glitch that wouldn't allow me to access a weapon I had purchased.
Maybe send them a message on Twitter? They're pretty good at dealing with issues.
