I don’t think I ever changed armor much, but yeah, stances are critical for most encounters after the first 1/3 of the game.

It's not that complicated. Wear traveler armor on the overworld for exploring and when you're approaching missions/potential battles switch armor. Traveler armor works well enough for bandit runins so it's easy to plan switching.
