Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (12/4/2025; Switch, Switch 2)

i can't believe there is no stand-alone thread on this.

i don't have and don't intend to get a Switch, but I loved Metroid Prime on Gamecube. Finished it a couple times. Incredible game. Almost finished the second. Didin't have Nintendo beyond GC. but i fucking loved Prime as an experience and I am a diehard Metroid fan from the original NES.

had most incarnations and sequels and what not. something about that franchise always tickled me. the sequel tweaks and differences and then the complete 180 with FPS Metroid Prime. That was actually, probably my first FPS. I had always thought Halo: Combat Evolved was, but forgot this was considered FPS. i mean there are still a lot of third-person elements, especially when Samus in ball, but this was my first.

had to make a thread on this next bc i need to live vicariously through all those that have the means and will play this...

thought this was funny as well...

I enjoyed the heck out of the original prime, never played any of the sequels. Might have to pick this one up.

Short version: the game just wasn't shaping up, so the reins are being handed over to Retro, who are starting over from (or close enough to) zero. So don't expect Metroid Prime 4 anytime in the next year or two.

We still have no confirmation what Retro has been working on. It's been five years since Tropical Freeze! Maybe those rumors about that Star Fox racer will bear some fruit this year.

They should do a remaster of the first three for the Switch to help bridge the new development window.

Supposedly the remasters are already done and were supposed to be announced last month. Looks like we'll be waiting a while for them now.

Agreed that at least remasters of the first three would be nice to tide us over during the long wait. I’m not the biggest Metroid fan but still will play the new one when it’s out eventually.

That's a great idea. But I'm sure they would want to do this at least within a year of releasing 4 to at least tie it in together and drum up hype.

I can't believe they've had this much trouble in development, or that they let it get this far. But - given that they have - major kudos to Nintendo for going so far to get the product right, image and financial losses be damned. This type of choice happens maybe 1% of the time in today's corporate environment. In this case, the fans will benefit hugely in the end.

This would have been the first game to finally get me to consider a Switch. Guess I don't have to sweat it now.

I've never played the previous game (wanted to get the Trilogy for the Wii but it was OOP and long-gone by the time I bought the system). How do they play? Would they still hold up today the way that 2D Metroid games do? Because Halo Anniversary was a much better idea in theory than it was in execution and felt really dated and unimpressive despite the new coat of paint.

Aside from the the strange control setup for a FPS, the first one captures the feel of a Metroid game almost perfectly for me. I think it, especially, would hold up if well updated.

I replayed the first one like 2 years ago and it held up great. It's more first person platformer than shooter and I like the Prime series far more than the 2D stuff. It's weird I'm a big fan of metroidvanias but I don't like Super Metroid or Symphony of the Night the two parents of the genre.

I bought the trilogy twice now and haven't played it

I have a sealed copy of the Wii steelbook, then I picked it up on the Wii U for $10 so I didn't have to open my other copy. I just hate using the motion controls, and have a feeling it's going to extremely frustrating.

I thought the motion controls made a few of the boss fights easier than traditional controls.

I usually dislike motion controls but Metroid Prime plays great on the Wii.

6 years after Oldboy's original post we finally have a release date (well year at least) 2025! And a new title: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond!

re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (12/4/2025; Switch, Switch 2)

I'll just copy what I already posted in the main Switch thread:

Metroid Prime 4. I don't want to say underwhelmed. But I'm more whelmed. I don't know if it's just the exceptionally long development time or what but finally seeing a taste of the game was a slight let down for me. Of course I'm not judging the final project. I guess since we've waited this long I was kind of hoping they would wait for the next console (which I'm still hoping they'll pull a Twilight Princess/BOTW and release it on both with some graphical improvements). It just honestly didn't look any better than Metroid Prime Remastered. It didn't really introduce any kind of unique gameplay gimmick and I wasn't really impressed with Metroid Prime Hunters so that tie in didn't mean anything to me. It'll definitely be a day one purchase for me and I'm sure I'll love it I'm just not nearly as excited as I thought I would have been.

Wow. I actually preordered this back when Best Buy still had whatever its 20% off video games program was called. I still have the original order confirmation email from January 2020, but it looks like they removed the item from their site and canceled my order without ever emailing me about it.

It's still there! Take this URL and change the order number to what you see in your confirmation email:

Code:
https://www.bestbuy.com/profile/ss/orders/order-details/BBY01-XXXXXXXXXXXX/view
Since I preordered this more than 6 years ago (!), I can't browse to this on my list of orders, and the link in the confirmation email no longer works, but when I plug in the order number directly:
