My kid got some PSN cards for his birthday and pre ordered Call of Duty. Will this automatically download midnight on release day or does he have to go in and do it himself.

If he keeps his PS4 in standby mode when he’s not using it (rather than completely powering it off), it’ll automatically download. Better still, it’ll automatically download the game before the release date and “unlock” when intended. So, he could start playing immediately on the release date instead of just watching a download bar.
