Features that you were upset were removed in console hardware revisions?

When video game console manufacturers revise their consoles, occasionally certain features are removed as a cost-cutting move to lower the price of their console. What features were you upset were removed in video game console revisions?

While I do agree, I give them credit for having PS1 + PS2 backward compatibility for PS3. I'll also give them credit for cross buy between PS4/PS3/Vita.

I'll vote for downgrading the screen in the Vita. I understand why they did it, but going from an OLED to an LCD was a mistake IMO.

Also I think a lot of people forget that Xbox One added 360 compatability with software updates, not hardware revisions. Less than a third of 360 games work on Xbox One.

So I guess I also vote 360 backward compatability, especially since my 360 backlog is much larger than my PS3 backlog.

Dedicated Kinect port on the One. Ok, I don't use the Kinect all that much and it was a terrible idea to bundle it, but if I ever want to upgrade my console I need to pay for an adapter now.

The Wii also removed GameCube compatibility later in its life. Same with the DS and the GBA slot. And then the kicker, the PSP Go removed the UMD drive altogether. And then they had a budget PSP that I don't think was even released here that did the exact opposite, it had a UMD drive but no wireless antenna.

Custom soundtracks that don't require a music service subscription.

Xbox One - the mini guide. Hell the entire dash is a fucking nightmare and has steadily gone downhill with each update dating back to the 360 days.

PS3 Backwards compatibility - it would be nice to play some of those games with a decent controller instead of that carpal tunnel POS DS3.

I just want to clarify that when I said PS3 backward compatibility, I meant the PS3 being able to play PS2 games as that would fit the criteria for the OP's question.
PS4 being able to play PS3 games doesn't work since PS4 never had that feature in the first place.

Re: Features that you were upset were removed in console hardware revisions?

Oh, hardware revisions. I totally misunderstood the question. This seems like a pretty limited topic with only a half dozen possible answers.

Gamecube -> component
Wii -> GCN support
PS3 -> PS2 support
Xone -> Kinect port
360 -> removable hard drives?
WiiU -> Game support

Good one!

I replaced my launch XB1 a couple weeks ago, just missing the window for a free adapter. I was kind of sad when my wife was playing Overwatch shortly afterwards and shouted "Xbox, record that!", only...y'know, nothing. It also means that Kinect Sports Rivals (bowling was super-fun!) and Fantasia will be collecting dust, not that they've been in rotation for a while anyway.

I'd buy an adapter, but $40 seems way out of step for what you get.

What is this referring to? I didn't think there were any Wii U hardware revisions. (I mean, different colors, varying levels of internal storage, but otherwise...)

It was a failed attempt at humor.

Re: Features that you were upset were removed in console hardware revisions?

The original PlayStation had its parallel port removed, which meant the Gameshark could no longer be used. The serial port was also dropped later.

The PS2 had its hard drive connectivity removed, almost certainly as a response to the HD Loader software - which enabled games to be copied to a drive and loaded without the discs.

PS3 lost SACD playback and the ability to install Linux to it, and the card readers in the 60GB model. Oh, and it lost backwards compatibility too, in case anyone hasn't mentioned that yet.

I dunno, stopping support of your system 18 months out from the new one is pretty close to being on the nose. But yes, a lame attempt at humor.

That just seems to be Nintendo's thing, as awful as that is. Make a list of how many noteworthy first party games Nintendo released on the Wii in 2011/2012; hell, I think it could be pretty easily argued that Nintendo did a better job (lackluster though it is) with the Wii U's final 18 months than they did with the Wii. I wouldn't call 2005/2006 banner years for the GameCube either, at least not as far as first-party support goes. Of course, the Wii and GameCube weren't ghost towns outside of first party support, easing the sting somewhat, but you pinned the blame on Nintendo's support specifically, so third-party doesn't really factor into this argument.

Most of these features I don't understand why anyone would be upset by. It's not like they removed them from the systems you already owned. Why would I care that they removed GameCube functionality out of later iterations of the Wii when even if I didn't have one that did they are easily available?

It can be a drag when you have to replace a console (if it's stolen, stops working, etc.) and lose something you used to have access to. That happened to me with PS3's BC and with the Xbox One S dropping the Kinect port.

Kind of along those same lines, if you're intrigued by a console early on but aren't able to buy in till later, you might miss out on a feature that intrigued you. I don't think any of those features are critical selling points, exactly, but not having access to them could still be a drag.

Re: Features that you were upset were removed in console hardware revisions?

The Intellivision II was not able to play Coleco manufactured cartridges.

If I had to guess what might have happened at Mattel, the Intellivision firmware was probably modified such that Mattel manufactured cartridges could still be played, but unauthorized third party manufactured games (such as Coleco) could not be played at all.

We had an early PS3 that had the BC but it got the yellow light death. By that time the BC models were crazy expensive on the secondary market, so we just got a regular PS3 but that means we have to keep around the PS2 just to have access to those games.

The "Play Station" CD-ROM add-on was originally intended for the SNES, and was never released. There is a fully functional prototype of a combined SNES/CD-ROM system though:

The N64 had the 64DD magnetic disk drive that was released in Japan, but not in the US:
