Sounds like it's overheating. That's my guess anyway.

Sounds like the Yellow light of death. Your chipset is likely detaching from the motherboard due to overheating.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

Well I tried getting some of the dust out of the vents of it and ran fine yesterday. I also deleted the pictures and a few videos I had on it in case it dies on me soon.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

You did the right thing. Backup everything you need and say a few words if it goes out again. My first one that did that would come back on for a very short period of time I believe twice and then after that, it wouldn't come back on again. I was overconfident and left a disc in there. I had to take the console apart to get the disc out.

I still use the PS3 for BDs as I like the remote, and it doesn’t usually have a game disc in it, but it’s getting less useful as a streamer due to services not supporting it.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

Could an overheating PS3 be fixed with some thermal paste?

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

I believe the chips have to bet set back to the board and new thermal paste applied to keep it cool. It seems that the paste they used for at least the older PS3s wasn't the best and dried up over time. From what I understand is that the chips will slowly start to detach from the motherboard after the cooling paste wastes away.

Well I'm watching a movie on the PS3 right now and its as quiet as can be. I have been working on decluttering so I might start looking to see if I can sell some of my PS3 games just sitting on my shelf.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

Well I started looking around on the Playstation Network website and they don't even really have a help section for anything PS3 anymore. I might be visiting my local used shop to find out about selling my system or see if they do any repair work. I'm just thinking ahead in anticipation I might need to get rid of it.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

Funny, I had a launch BC PS3 and it died. I don't recall when it happened or how it died, but Sony swapped it out for a Slim which I still have. I guess MS conditioned me to just roll with replacements with the 360 that I'm numb to it now. I lost count of the number of 360's I had swapped out. It was somewhere in the realm of 5-7 consoles. Add in the 1 Playstation 3 and I had my launch Wii die on me last year. All in all last gen was a shit generation in terms of quality control.

Zero issues with the XBO, WiiU or PS4, knock on wood.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

Well it died on me again last night so I formatted and deactivated the system and packaged it up to take it to used shop I was going to try and sell it to today. I took it to them and it died as they tested it so they couldn't buy it and another customer who was in the store offered to buy it from me for $20. He said he repaired them so I took his offer. I'll get my new bluray player on Thursday.

I went through six 360s at launch that died within the first two days of owning them. The seventh one did the trick as I still have it today in the bedroom. I have never had any problems with a PlayStation and I have owned them all. Hopefully, the streak will continue with the PS5.

Just an FYI for the 4 people who use these stores.

Shame about the Vita.

I don't think that's in the cards for the foreseeable future. They're still trying to keep eDelivery popular.

Right, that's why I said "if" because I'm not sure we know (plus I think this is just a rumor). However, the only way to download stuff is through the store, so unless they have another method...

Yep, I misread what you wrote and edited that before you responded, I was too slow apparently.

But if they are hoping to push Downloads on the PS5, they kind of can't be cutting them off - that'd just be a major red flag.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

I know this thread is more aimed at the PS3, but that’s too bad about the Vita. Underrated handheld that Sony bailed on way too fast. Might have to go through the store and see if there’s anything remaining I want to get.

Agreed, it was literally ahead of it's time. The main difference between it and the Switch are the (rarely properly used) joycon features and the dock. Well that, plus the fact that Nintendo made the switch the flagship while Sony had other priorities. But man that Uncharted game was an awesome initial look at what could have been had a portable with full priced games and development budgets been viable at the time.

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

Uncharted: Golden Abyss was actually pretty much the sole reason I bought my Vita. I actually bought it release week too, which is rare (the only other console I’ve bought release day is the Switch).

I always fel like Sony shot themselves in the foot with the ridiculously expensive memory expansions for the thing.

This is a little off topic, but this piece of terrifying news has been making the rounds lately concerning your ability to use your PS4 in the not-so-distant future:

Re: RIP Playstation 3 (2006-2017)

I just went through the whole PS3 store to see if there was anything I still wanted and hadn't purchased yet and I only found a few things. It took me maybe 20 minutes to go through literally every game on the store. There are a few PS2 classics I might buy if there was a sale or something but since that isn't happening I'm fine without them.
