Sony to Halt Playstation 3 Production in Japan Production of the PlayStation 3 will soon be halted in Japan, according to an announcement posted on the official PlayStation Japan website. A translation for the post says that “shipments are scheduled to conclude soon” on the black 500 GB PS3, the only version of the console still being manufactured in Japan. Many see the announcement as signaling the end of the popular gaming console’s manufacturing run worldwide. Ken Kutaragi, the former Sony exec and “father of the Playstation,” said the console was expected to have a 10-year life cycle. The console was released in 2006, and has exceeded its planned life. As of March 2016, 85 million PS3 units were sold. The PS3 underwent several design changes over its lifetime, including the introduction of the PlayStation 3 Slim and PlayStation 3 Super Slim models. Among the console’s most popular titles: Uncharted 2, Grand Theft Auto V, and The Last of Us. Its successor, the PlayStation 4, was released in November 2013. “After mindful thought, we chose to move our concentration and assets to PlayStation 4 and Windows PC to additionally create and enhance the client experience on these two gadgets. This move places us in the best position to develop the service much further,” Sony posted in February. Consequently, the PlayStation Now service for the PS3, PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV will discontinue in August 2017. Not that anyone should be surprised by this. I never invested in the PS3. I was a 360 guy for that generation. Unless you really want to keep your systems and games, I guess it's time for some of you to dump it in the secondary market or find some retailer willing to take it for trade credit. |

I still play my PS3 fairly often, considering PS+ still throws games at me every month. I wonder how much longer they'll continue offering the PS3 versions of games.

I honestly didn't use my PS3 very much for gaming but still have it. I bought it more as a Blu-ray player. I did grow to love the Uncharted series because of owning it though.

I guess its now time to go buy one, lol :). Seriously though, if I ever came across one in a rummage sale or something, I might spring for it. If nothing else, for the exclusive JPRGs that Sony always seem to have.

I have two PS3's, a launch 60GB (that still plays PS1 + PS2 games) and the first revision of the slim. Still one of the best blu ray players on the market. |

I still have my PS3 and play it every now and then. The only thing that worries me is that it will become an obsolete blu-ray player when the updates stop.

I originally bought my PS3 to play NCAA Football with work buddies, and then was really happy to have it later for the MLB: The Show series. Actually, this year's version of The Show may be the reason why I but a PS4.

It's still my primary media player, and I have games for it that I haven't played or might replay and haven't upgraded to current generation.

Same here. I have probably 20% of the amount of games on PS3 as I do on 360, and almost all are console exclusives. I just couldn't get over the controller.

Still use mine as my BD player and for netflix and VUDU. I have a PS4 but the lack of remote makes it a pain in the ass to use for non gaming.

My PS3 Slim is still my main media hub in the bedroom. My wife loves to use it for Hulu Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Back in the day, I was just about to buy a PS3 until I ran into several old friends at various parties. It turned out these old friends all had Xbox360 consoles, where there was a possibility we could swap gamediscs every once in a while. So I abruptly changed my mind at the last minute, and ended up buying a 360. In the end, we ended up only swapping gamediscs 3 or 4 times. In hindsight, I probably would have been better off buying a PS3. Considering I was never quite able to master the controls, my xbox360 never got much use after a year or so. (Not even as a standalone dvd player). If I had purchased a PS3 back in the day, it could have been used as a standalone bluray player. (On the other hand if I had purchased a PS3, I probably would have jumped onto the bluray treadmill at the time, and spent a lot of cash on superfluous movies. IIRC, $5 dump bin blurays were quite rare back in late-2008 -> 2009). |

I still use my PS3 daily, mostly for blu-ray, Netflix and media streaming (since I have the remote for it and not for my PS4), and I still have a few downloaded games on there that I have on the ready to play now and again, like Street Fighter II HD and some SHMUPs. Though I can't remember the last time I put a game disc into the thing.

I still have my 20gb launch console. The fact that it still works amazes me as I used to put the thing in the freezer for a few moments to cool it down after use lol.
I should probably pick up a new slim unit while it's still available. |

The PS3 works great as a media player especially if used with the Blu tooth remote. I have it hooked up along with my PS4 to the same TV and use it more because of the remote. I wish Sony would make their own because the aftermarket Blu tooth remotes that are available for the PS4 suck.

So i have started to notice the fan is getting really loud on PS3 when I use it for a long period of time. I use it for everything(Video games, bluray player, and all forms of streaming) and I am starting to worry it might be a sign its about to break. I have thought maybe getting an extra bluray player, that can do all the streaming, and just using the PS3 a lot less. I don't know if I will make the jump to a PS4 because I just don't play video games like I use to. Thoughts?

That may be a sign of excessive dust. There are YouTube tutorials on PS3 dust removal, but it requires canned air and unscrewing shit.

I still occasionally use my PS3 games on the HD, and for a long time, it was my primary BD player as well. Up until the day it quit reading discs. Now my PS4 is my BD player, and I use a Roku for streaming.

I moved mine to the bedroom specifically for Netflix since my old Panny is not a smart TV. I'm going on the assumption that no support also includes no subscription software updates for Netflix?

So I'm bumping the last playstation 3 thread with a question. My gaming days are mostly behind me and I still use my PS3 mostly as a blu-ray player and for streaming. I was watching videos off YouTube and all of a sudden my system just shutdown and completely powered off. It's done that twice now and was wondering should I be worried my system is about to crap out?
