OK - I just got to where my party
and the game got much more interesting. I'm actually doing different things in combat now, and using abilities/spells and changing equipment.
I did finally apply my skill points. Hero is using Greatsword, Erik is using boomerang and knife. I am targeting dual-wield.
(Erik's voice acting is weird - his accent keeps changing.)
WTF is
Will I find out later in the story?
Anyway, my interest is re-piqued.

As for the Tockington stuff, I don't think this is a spoiler as it's one of the main advertised bonuses of the Definitive Edition, but yes each book focuses on events of previous DQs. It's pretty cool.
