So do you ever actually play every game in your backlog?
Just curious about that. I was thinking about picking up Bloodborne because I like the setting and artwork. But my backlog is so loooooong it amost borders on ridiculous.
So do you actually clear your backlogs or just keep buying games under the "I'll finish it eventually" mindset?

I've stopped buying games for the time being. Last time I bought any was Black Friday. Definitely the reason being I'll never get to my backlog if I just buy the latest titles.
That being said, when Fallout 4 comes out I will drop whatever I'm doing and play that instead.

hahahahahahaha...
no. My backlog goes back generations at this point. I've slowed down on buying new games, though I'm not sure if that's because I finally wisened up or because there are fewer games that appeal to me this gen.
I will say that PSN sales and especially Best Buy GCU has tested my resolve a ton (it used to be TRU and they're bi annual B2G1F sales that did that). And don't get me started on Steam, I've stopped looking during the big year end sales because of my backlog.
I did buy Bloodborne, and I'll play it right away, mainly because I still have a sealed copy of Dark Souls II that I never got around to, and I'm not making that mistake again.

No. Not even close. Thanks to Steam and Humble Bundle and uber cheap games, the backlog is huge. Several years worth I imagine. And since I have so many games to play, I don't find myself needing to buy the latest game as soon as it comes out, again saving me money. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part, I can wait on AAA titles.

My backlog was so big I stopped buying games for 360 and PS3, even on Black Friday. Of course that all went out the window when I got an Xbone and had to have something to play. I'm still trying not to buy more than I can realistically play, but Games with Gold is a real problem.

i probably have over 50-70 games in my backlog from 360 and Gamecube. i will probably never play Gamecube again, and i doubt i will get to a quarter of 360 before my life dramatically turns somehow. but, i love my One and have been buying sporadically since i got system whenever i got it, around X-mas time, i think...

5,000 game backlog
play maybe 10 new games each year
buy dozens every month
Unless time begins to work differently, I'll never catch up.

This thread is making me feel better about having around 30 games on disc and 30 digital games in my backlog.

I have around 35-40 games tops including 8 on the PS4 & the rest on the 360. I pick up a new or used game probably 4-5 times per year. I'm glad this is one hobby that I haven't gotten too caught up in.
Once I decided to get the PS4, that was it for a next gen console. Just don't have the time like many here to own 2 next gen consoles. 1 is already more than enough.

and you keep purchasing new ones? This is in addition to the 5000+ movie backlog you have? You will be long dead and buried and probably not even future generations of your family will play them.My suggestion to you and I'm being serious....sell or donate most of them. You're what approaching 50 now? Trust me, You will never ever play them. I know you probably spent thousands of dollars on them, but get as much cash as you can, put it in the bank and at least do something good & donate the rest to Good Will or the library and use it for a tax write off.

I thought Trevor was exaggerating. I can't even think of dozens of games available to buy each month...

No. At this point it'd be impossible. As you get older you do realize that time is the most valuable commodity you have and my backlog actually runs back four generations at this point. My total backlog is about 230 physical titles. And while sprite based games, especially Super Nintendo, hold up well those first couple generations of 3D titles don't at all. I don't feel any need to revisit the PS1 / N64 / Saturn era and will probably just continue to donate them to Goodwill or pay someone to Ebay them for me.
But with this new generation I've altered my buying habits and completely curbed my need to play the newest thing immeadiatley. Basically, I don't buy anything new until I've finished (by beating or giving up on) what I'm currently playing.

Literally hundreds of games in my backlog, not even counting PS+ freebies. I don't buy brand new titles very often (and if I do, I push them to the front to justify it), but I buy a lot of clearance/discount titles just because, even though I can't really justify that either. Realistically I'll never get to 80% of it.

I quit playing my backlog titles and sold most of them. If I didn't have enough interest in them to play them by now, then I'll wait for the remaster.

I decided not to count my ios games. The only ones I've paid for I have played, and they seem not quite real to me even though I spend more time on my phone than on my consoles.

Re: So do you ever actually play every game in your backlog?
My "real" backlog at this point is PC games I'll probably never play, and it's really only 3 deep (Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, Far Cry: Blood Dragon, and Costume Quest 2). I just can't seem to wanna game when I sit in front of a computer, even though I have a pretty nice one.
I've never had a backlog of unopened, unplayed games, but I was pretty bad in the OG Xbox/GameCube era about playing through a level or two and never going back to a game.
I've tried to be better this generation about giving games a legitimate shot. Aside from a few racing games, I've finished the single player campaign in all my retail Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, Vita, and 3DS games except for ZombiU. (Well, and Persona 4 Golden for the Vita, but I bought that for my wife.) There are plenty of Games for Gold/PS+ games I've never played or have barely played, but I'd argue that those don't count in the same way.

I don't know why some of you are so surprised about the number of games in the backlog. Keep in mind, it's not just the last two generations. My own backlog goes back to the Genesis and SNES plus the hand-helds from back then. I probably won't even play those games but they are still there.

Re: So do you ever actually play every game in your backlog?
Due to PS+, I've only bought about one game a year. Since I don't play very often, it takes me a month or two to get through one game. Therefore, I am just slowly working through the games that PS+ has given me, because there are enough that interest me to keep going for a few years. I'm not counting every game PS+ has given me towards my backlog, just the ones I'm interested in, but I will eventually get through them all before moving on to PS4.

And you are probably right on with many of those comments, but telling a collector things like that is like telling a person with cancer to just stop having cancer.
I do my Roth every year, thanks for the reminder. I don't think I spend that much on gaming, maybe $30 a week? But being cheap, patient, and a bargain forum reader that gives me an average of a console game or three, and a bunch of cheap digital games every week. Times 52 weeks, times 35 years of collecting games equals too much to count.

Re: So do you ever actually play every game in your backlog?
I used to have over 200 games in my backlog. Back in the day of the crazy flip deals with Blockbuster, I'd spend a lot of Saturdays running to every one in the city and turning a small amount of cash into a dozen or so games. I quit doing that before they went under and have slowly done a massive purge over the past several years. Right now, not counting PSN freebies, I'm sitting on under 20 games for current gen, along with around 10 360 games I'll likely never play. My intent is to keep purchases to a minimum until I'm through the current backlog, but we'll see. I became a dad in February and have only played handhelds since, as it's hard to get a big enough chunk of free time to justify diving into a console game.

Re: So do you ever actually play every game in your backlog?
My backlog is pretty ridiculous. Over 300 console games, about 100 PC titles. I've pretty much always had a backlog. I started out good in the PS1 generation, disciplining myself to not buying another game until I completed the current one, but when the JRPGS started flooding out and each being a huge time sink, I fell behind. I really got into PC gaming in the late 90s and my backlog grew as I was so addicted to Starcraft online and spending all my gaming time in multiplayer.
I still have games from Xbox 1st generation still in the wrapper. At one point, it worked in my favor though because the PC games went out of print and suddenly was worth some good money. I sold off most of my PC physical game collection, and now I get them dirt cheap on steam.
