(1) By building the new system(s) around these concepts instead of trying to staple them onto systems that weren't as forward-looking as they should've been, and (2) partnering with a company with more experience in this end of things.

Honestly, if they made a portable with Wireless HDMI and included a receiver, it'd probably be huge.

I see this as the first step towards Nintendo becoming a 3rd-party developer for Sony and Microsoft. That said, that first step is most likely the first step in a 10-20 year process. They're probably a failed console or two away from giving it up.

The Wii shut down any talk of them going the way of SEGA for a long time but it was a fluke and they'll never repeat it again. It just delayed the inevitable.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

I think another big problem is that the audience for Nintendo is just simply getting older and not really into video games much anymore. The people who grew up playing the NES and SNES are in their 30s and 40s now. There really aren't too many people in this age group that still play video games.

I am 36 and still play video games, but I am the exception not the rule. Almost all of my friends my age no longer play video games.

I look at my 10 year old nephews and cousins, and they don't care about Mario at all. They want to spend all day playing Halo. The Nintendo franchises just don't appeal to the younger generations like they appealed to my generation.

I think that is going to be a huge problem for Nintendo in 10-15 years. When my generation gets old and starts dying off, who is going to be left to buy Nintendo games?

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

Really? My kids are younger than 10 but absolutely love Nintendo games, especially my little girl, who I don't think would ever be interested in Halo. And doesn't the DS show that the younger generation is fine with Nintendo games?

If anything, I'd think the DS and their line of portables will prevent them from going the way of Sega anytime soon. I'd argue that the existence of the DS somewhat cannibalized sales of the WiiU for their audience.

I mean, Square Enix put a major Dragon Quest game on the DS and not the console.

Aside from parents with the TV tuned to Nickelodeon or whatever, I would imagine very few adults have seen the Wii U or any of its games on TV.
Toward your point, my brother is an adult with two small kids with a TV tuned to Nickelodeon or whatever all day, and the owner of a Wii. He was looking to buy Mario Kart for his kids last Christmas. I told him if he was going to do that, make sure he gets the Wii version and not the Wii U version.

His response? "What's a Wii U?"

Also with the rise of mature titles like Halo and Call of Duty, Nintendo has the stigma of being for kids. Hard to shake that when you have zero 3rd party support.

Maybe my nephews and cousins are just odd then. They don't care about Nintendo at all. They kind of remind me of that scene from Back to the Future II where Marty shows the arcade game to a bunch of kids, and the kids call it a baby's toy.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

There's simply a lot more crap out there these days, and Nintendo didn't have a killer app like Wii Sports to distinctify itself among the masses. Nintendo characters are popular, but how have any of the games changed, at all, since their last iteration? Even graphically it's a marginal jump.

I don't think "looking like it's for kids" is a big deal except to "core gamers" which also split into two groups. But considering the insane popularity of Candy Crush and Angry Birds, I don't think it's an overwhelming negative.

Plus the Wii U was a marketing fiasco.

I'm probably the odd one. As a gamer, I probably go out of my way to introduce my kids to what I consider age-appropriate games, and Nintendo, while not only for kids, make games for all ages. She can enjoy Animal Crossing (though not on the WiiU), Pikmin, Mario, Mario Kart, Lego and most recently Captain Toad, even if she can't yet play them on her own. I'd be really sad if Nintendo did go the way of Sega.

And I just realized, outside of one downloadable game, they never made a Pokemon game for the WiiU, not even a Stadium game...

Third party support won't do it alone. They still need a reliable and hardcore gamer-centric online service. What good is having CoD on your system if your online blows? See Nintendo Wii.

IMO, a robust online infrastructure is numero uno on the to do list. Third parties come second.

Nintendo's inability to embrace online gaming beyond anything basic means they won't gain any marketshare, nay mindshare amongst the gaming community.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

FWIW, I fucking love that I can load up the game pad on the Wii U and play the full version of any game on the system without using the TV. That to me is a hell of a feature that Nintendo got completely right. And the tablet itself works quite well as a regular controller. The problem is that outside of the use case I just described, almost all of the implementations of the game pad have been a failure. Nintendo tried to model the Wii U on the success of the DS, but it doesn't work with a TV.

The other problem I have with the tablet and playing games on it exclusively is that the range is so short... I can't even go into the other room and play a game.

“We do not plan on talking specifics about the the NX until 2016,” Iwata said again during the investors meeting. Explaining why the announcement was made so early, Iwata said he didn’t want people to think the smart device collaboration with DeNA meant that Nintendo was abandoning home gaming systems.

“Presently, we cannot talk about the time period when it [the NX] will go on sale or what it’s like,” Iwata said. “Because we are calling it a ‘new concept,’ we are not thinking of this as a ‘simple replacement’ for the 3DS or the Wii U.”

"Fusion" was going around for a while.

I can't imagine that Nintendo would try to use the name Unity -- there's already an extremely popular game engine by that name, and Nintendo has a relationship with them -- but...well, it didn't stop them from releasing Codename: STEAM.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

Running on Android OS? http://kotaku.com/rumor-nintendos-ne...oid-1708124299

Current Nintendo hardware uses the company’s own proprietary operating systems. But according to Nikkei, one of Japan’s largest newspapers, that will soon change. One insider tells the paper that the NX will supposedly be built around the Android OS.

The NX is Nintendo’s codename for its upcoming console. We don’t know much about the NX, other than it will “surprise” people. Oh, and Nintendo is mulling over the idea of making the NX region-free.

We now might know a little more if, this rumor is true. An insider tells Nikkei that the NX’s “operating system is loaded with Android.” The same insider continued, “This would be able to speed up getting all game developers on board.” It would also mean that development could be expanded to smartphones, tablets, and other devices, this insider added.

Given how Android is normally employed, if what this insider says is correct it’s likely the NX’s OS will simply be based on Android (similar to the Ouya), not a direct implementation of the same software normally found on phones and tablets.

The Nikkei article explains that the apparent reason for this move is the Wii U is not compatible with other game machines. So it’s hard for developers to make back money on a title’s development costs when they have to create it specifically for one console. They can’t easily do a multi-platform release like they could on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Over the years, Nikkei has had a pretty good track record with rumors (like here). Last year, Nikkei reported that Nintendo was planning on putting trailers, promotional info and promotional mini-games on smartphones. Nintendo issued this statement saying, “we can confirm that there are no plans to offer minigames on smartphone devices.”

Um... Then, this happened.

Nintendo also dismissed a Nikkei rumor in 2012 that stated there would be a larger 3DS, only to announce the 3DS XL a few months later. And so on...

Still, an unconfirmed report is still a rumor. Kotaku has reached out to Nintendo for comment.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX

Eh we'll see how that goes. Android as a gaming platform isn't terrible, even though current gaming consoles based on Android are.
