Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX
I don't want a system dumbed down just so I can play it on the go. The "portable I can play at home" infers just that. Give me a solid console that can steam to a portable device and then I'm okay with it, even though I have no desire to own a portable.

This may be a fine line and even sound stupid, but a portable I can play at home is not what I want. However, a home console that can be played on the go is different in my eyes.

Nintendo NX Will Apparently Have Zelda, Mario and Pokemon Games Within Six Months of Release.
A new report claims the Nintendo NX will receive new Mario and Pokemon games, alongside The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild within six months of the console's March 2017 launch.
"Sources close to Nintendo" have reportedly told MCV that the company is hoping to avoid the slow start of its previous two consoles, Wii U and 3DS.
Anecdotally, few of Nintendo's major internal studios or second parties have shipped a major release since 2015, which could be seen to bear out such a rumor.
MCV also claims that Nintendo has already garnered third-party support - another struggle for its consoles in recent years - from Sega, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Activision and Warner Bros.
Finally, MCV also says that its sources tell it that last week's reports that the NX will be a handheld console that can be plugged into TVs are "100 per cent accurate".
One source says that the console's power sits between a PS3 and PS4, and that Nintendo's intention is to "upgrade" smartphone gamers, rather than draw fans away from PS4 and Xbox One.
The only games currently confirmed for an NX release are Zelda, Ubisoft's Just Dance 2017, and Sega's as-yet-untitled 2017 Sonic game.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX
Granted we don't know what else they have up their sleeve but coming off the WiiU disaster, they better come with more than that at launch.
Zelda may be great for some and be all you need for six months, but it's not for everyone. Plus the diehard fans will have already played it on the WiiU, correct?
Not what I meant. It was more of a jab at not having all three ready at launch. Not that I believe they'll get all three out.

Nintendo patents for accessories, gesture controls hint at NX features.
Several patent applications filed by Nintendo this past January were published online today, and their contents are reminiscent of recent reports about the company’s next game console, known only as the NX. As spotted by users on NeoGAF, one of the documents details a detachable accessory for a handheld device — much like the NX is rumored to have.
One patent application is for a controller-like accessory that plugs into "an information processing device." That device is most commonly shown to be a portable, tablet-like system in images included in the document. The accessory has four buttons, enabling its use as a controller, with other images showing how the buttons can be pressed to become operational.
The document is a bit of a dense read, but the pictures are what’s important. The detachable item looks and sounds like what’s been described by outlets like Eurogamer, which reported earlier this month that the NX is a portable console that is equipped with two removable controllers and is capable of docking to a bigger screen. Nintendo has not confirmed the report, but it’s been corroborated by sources close to the company, Eurogamer said, with additional rumors trailing in ever since.
The other applications detail gesture-based input technology for a new system, eliminating the need for a controller at all. A camera housed on the handheld system would capture gesture information from a player’s hand to control a game. That’s the sort of new technology that Nintendo is known for when introducing a new system, and the gesture operations appear in the controller patent application as well.
Similar technology was seen in a patent filed in July 2015. That application, published in March, goes in-depth on a portable device that was operated by right hand gestures, as the left hand gripped the handheld system. The application calls for an infrared camera to assess a player's hand motions, just as the newer document does.
We’ll have to wait until this fall to find out what the NX actually looks like and if the series of patents applies to the console. Find out everything we do know about Nintendo’s next console in our explainer — just keep in mind that the company has confirmed almost nothing about the system thus far.

Patent applications aren't exactly the best predictor of new features. All of the companies apply for some patents they never use.

There's been a bunch of new rumors.

More in the link, including some mockups of button placement.

Here is what I currently know about the NX prototype so far.
(Note: it’s unknown how the final product might change.)
In May, I said Nvidia was involved with the system. (Source)
The screen is around 6 inches (6.2 to be specific)
The portable screen has a 720p resolution.
Multi-touch touchscreen (Haven’t heard anything about a stylus.)
32 GB of internal storage is on the NX dev kit. (They may increase storage to 64GB for the final retail unit, but I doubt it.)
There is an SD Card port.
Dock Station has at least 2 USB ports on prototype. Not sure about final product.
NX will support Unreal Engine 4 and Unity engine
NX is below Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in raw power.
Dev kits and prototypes are region free. I heard retail units will be region free too.
Nintendo still plans to support the 3DS with software through 2018.
Thickness of the device
Update: I heard the prototype was around 14mm in thickness. Maybe a tiny bit more than that. Laura Kate Dale heard 25mm from her source. Which is different from what I’ve heard.
Update 2: Second source said thickness of NX prototype is closer to the bottom half of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.

A 3 minute trailer that doesn't show the hardware... where have we seen that kind of thing before? Or was it more of a lot longer presentation that showed nothing?

The leaks were right! Handheld with a dock for console-style play, detachable controllers, cards for physical games...

Yeah, basically all the leaks were right on. It looks... pretty neat? I've been less interested in Nintendo properties lately and barely touched my 3DS, so i'll wait on more hardware specs, details, and price - it's cute that they showed all the different ways to play, i'm skeptical that I would find that much use though, especially on the go.

It's not for me
It's interesting i guess. maybe for someone who rides the bus a lot
I don't know how much i would use switch mode. At least there is a reg controller for tv mode
more gimmicks tho. Nintendo desperately trying to look hip in that commercial

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX
I need to give the video a closer look, but as far as games teased, there were:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Skyrim Remastered
NBA2KSomething
Some sort of 3D Mario
Mario Kart 8
Splatoon
...right?
I wish there were a straightahead console option since I don't need a handheld, but whatever. I'm not sold on sharing detachable controllers.

That was a god awful promo video, reminiscent of the late 90s/2000s ones.
But the system looks really interesting.

Re: Nintendo teases next hardware: the NX
I don't see it as a gimmick at all. I see it as them finally consolidating their two pillars. They've been lagging behind in consoles for years and they're starting to slip in mobile now as well.
They're bringing them together in a seamless way.
Maybe it's too little, too late. And by taking their IP to 3rd party platforms already (albeit in very limited capacity) they realize they've lost some people forever, but at least they're offering everything they have in one unit finally.
