Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
"Professional" reviewers have always kind been interesting to me over the last 7-8 years as the gaming blog type sites sprung up and all of a sudden anyone with an opinion and a blog that received enough hits was now a gaming journalist.
On one hand it's cool since everyone has a voice, but on the other hand you get guys who write poorly without any real background in writing. At least we can all agree that Subway's Sandwich Artists are actually artists, right? :) |
Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
On the contrary, I think you don't understand what "whining" means. Perhaps some people don't like when a game is too short, and others don't like if it's too long, others don't like if it's too complicated, etc. There are a wealth of opinions out there, most of them valid. Are there trolls as well? Certainly, but that comes with any form of discussion on the internet. I agree with your point about waiting for a price drop. I just hate this idea that any criticism of games (or the gaming industry) needs to be dismissed as "entitled whining." It's an absurd attempt to invalidate the concerns and criticisms of others. Why should every conversation be a happy, love-filled handjob for the gaming industry? That would not be an accurate reflection of reality. If you don't like reading discussion about a game, on forums dedicated to discussing games, the onus is on you to just ignore it instead of coming in and name-calling. |

I figured what the hell and picked it up. It is a solid game but I am already 80% through with maybe 5 hours into it. The story is very well done, acting is top quality, and some of the missions are good....but many elements feel dated and clunky. It does not deserve the bashing it has received so far, but it also is a shame it is just not a little better since the presentation is jaw dropping at times, especially when you get into the later missions and out of the dark earlier missions. I would give it a high 7 at this point. I hate QTE, but honestly they are not that bad in this so far. The game is very generous with the time it gives you to use them, and many are not instant fails. |

Cool, thanks fox. I hope I get a copy in the mail tomorrow from Gamefly. Still need to cancel my preorder at Best Buy.

No they don't. They refund your deposit. Do you think you're getting paid for moving out when you get your security deposit money returned to you? CRV is one of the many things that I don't miss about California.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I finished the game. I liked it well enough that I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel (if they improved the game). They should probably rip the word "cinematic" out of their dictionaries before starting any sequel.
The cover system can be annoying, especially when paired with the recovery system. When you recover you stand straight up. Not good when you're behind low cover. Their version of bullet time (they call it Blacksight) is probably the worst I've ever seen. I finished the story without getting the "kill 25 enemies in Blacksight" trophy because I felt no desire to use it. |
Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I finished the game...took about 7.5 hours to get my platinum.
Game jumps the shark story wise late, but pulls it back together by the end. Solid game, but I would not pay more than 20-30 bucks for it, unless you plan on trading it in right away.. (GCU it is of course 47..and current trade in is 40 so 44 with your bonus...and since you earn about 2 bucks worth of credit, you are really only paying 1 dollar plus tax to play it if you use best buy) |
Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
The story is just way too much unskippable exposition. I don't give a shit about it, I just want to play the game.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I have a long tradition now, of trusting more DVTalk forum users reviews than Metacritic.
Based on the few comments here, this is my kind of game. I mean, I already love the steampunk and setting of the game. Whenever I get a PS4 this is going to be one of my first games. |
Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
This really sounds like a descent game. Just not worth $60 based on length and replay factor. I'll pick it up on sale later this year.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I canceled my order. Now that I'm reading on how short the game is I'm glad. Maybe I'll rent it on redbox when it they get it and beat in less than a day.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I got my Gamefly rental yesterday. I'm up to Chapter IV after a few hours. It's certainly more than just QTEs -- there was a battle on the streets of Whitechapel that was a total clown car of bad guys -- lasted ages. Overall I do like the game - certainly more than I enjoy most games with a sub-70 Metascore. It's absolutely beutiful, some details are amazing : looking through windows made of that old-fashioned distorted glass, the way shadows move in response to your lantern, the London fog in the distance, the score, the sound effects. So much is so well done. It makes me all the more frustrated that the game isn't better. It's so damn linear. The "collectables" are boring and Sir Galahad moves so slowly that you don't even want to check out every corner you explore. Plus there's the Uncharted effect where you can unwittingly trigger a cutscene by going too far in one direction and this miss out on a collectable until your next play-through. Miss one and it's bye-bye Platinum trophy.
The cover mechanic is screwed up as well. So much feels close to Uncharted or Gears, but then you have a wonky cover mechanic, you die and you realize how important that feature really is. Plus I've never hit anyone with blind firing. Don't believe it's even possible. Wish they gave you more freedom with the fancy Tesla guns. That fire one was mega-cool until Lafayette took it away from me. Thanks buddy! And I had to laugh at Sir Percival chugging his backwater for a graze on his neck then telling the other knight to work on saving the wounded constable. Way to be chivalrous , Percy! |

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
You know this game really isn't that bad. It's no classic or anything but it's enjoyable. Yes the cut scenes do kind of drag on, though. It basically feels like Hideo Kojima's Gears of War. It doesn't deserve all the venom it's getting but I kind of think that after Titanfall, Evolve, and Watch Dogs ended up being over hyped this game not being amazing was the straw that broke the camels back.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
The game isn't that bad other than the fact that the protagonist drags ass and the Council/Order meetings go on for an unskippable 10 minutes or so.

FWIW, that same scene I mentioned was in the first gameplay footage released at E3 last year. You see it here at the 4:00 mark.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I saw a buddy of mine play this the other day. Looks great, and fun. I might consider picking it up when it's $20 or so way down the road.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It is quite stunning to look at and it's nice just walking around in that world. I've enjoyed the story so far and overall getting past a few goofy mechanics, it's been a good ride.

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I kept my pre-order and it should be here today or tomorrow.
I'm sure the majority wanted more out this game; be it length, story, MP, free roam, etc....but I believe we'll see a totally different The Order come the next time. They have all the pieces in place...outstanding characters, a time period and setting that's just fantastic and a story that can be build upon in different directions. I read a article on Cliffy B's take on the game and it was pretty interesting. If they could expand a bit on using the weapons, able to explore more, add more Lycan types, increase more levels/map areas and above all else....add some co-op to this...it could be a real winner. |

Re: The Order: 1886 - PS4 (2/20/2015)
I'm up to chapter 5 and I'm digging the hell out of this game. That being said, none of the supposed drawbacks (length, cutscenes) were things that bother me.
