Unfortunately they don't sell it in stores anymore. I got an official one off ebay. The third-party dongles are cheaper and most of them probably work fine, but I paid a few bucks more for an official one. Mine came in official packaging and I'm pretty confident it is legit.

I would first try to update the firmware on the controller and see if that improves the Bluetooth reliability. It looks like there is a new update since I last tried Bluetooth. Go to https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/...ess-controller and follow the "Update on PC" instructions.

I downloaded the Xbox accessories app and updated the firmware. I'll try it out later on today to see if it works.

I just tried it and it stopped working about 10 minutes in. The light in the middle didn't start blinking and lose connection the light in the middle stayed on, but it switched to the keyboard I pulled the battery and plugged in.

Amaaon had this gaming PC on sale for under $600 overnight:

It's out of stock now. I would have bought it and gave my Lenovo to my Mom.

Darn. I would've jumped on that too.

I've been aggressively researching gaming desktops but I wanted to get some thoughts on what the two most important factors are on a 2024 gaming PC. I assume they are the processor (I'm narrowing it down to the i9 processor) and video card (narrowed down to 4070). Is that the correct focus?

A good cooling system is essential.

Considering both that CPU and GPU are power hungry, you'll need to make sure you buy a power supply that offers enough juice for them both.

Speaking of an i9 + 4070 combo, I've been enamoured with the small footprint of the Asus ROG NUC. But it's price tag sure isn't small.

Not a terrible price. A laptop with those specs would be 2k+, I'd imagine.

No doubt. I have a AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 (Full) laptop and that alone was like $900.

I see. Then again, I keep forgetting that consoles of each current generation are really mid-tier gaming PCs that are sold at a loss. As such, I had a knee-jerk reaction when I saw the price for such a nicely compact PC.

I should mention the reason I want something so small-yet-robust is because I'd bee hooking it up to my AVR and us my 65" LG C2 as my gaming monitor. So I'd rather not have an actual tower taking up too much space.

As a graphic designer, I’m completely Mac based. My home machine is an M2 Mac Studio and my school machine is a 2019 MacBook Pro.

My gaming is limited to consoles.

Until a few days ago when I bought this:

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...02c3ffd59.jpeg

I bought an ACE Magician AMD Rysen 7 5700U (16GB Ram, 512GB SSD drive) on a lightening deal for $260.00.

We set it up, got it running, loaded Steam and played a few games.

It’s a pretty slick little thing.

Anybody want a free copy of High on Life for Steam? I already own it and got another copy in my Humble Choice package.

If you haven't played it, nows your chance to watch all of Tammy and the T-Rex. Just saying.

I'm a bit miffed that everything pre-built seems to be a clear-case RGB-loaded case with no front drive bays. Whatever happened to a non-descript black box?

I need to upgrade my decade-old PC, if just so I can run Windows 11, but also because the CPU is finally struggling to keep up, but I want to keep my Blu-ray burner in the case, and it seems like if I want that, I'm going to have to build my own.

Often times that is a less expensive route and you don’t get all the bloat-ware from a pre-build.

From what I'm seeing, it's not cheaper, especially once factoring in the price of a copy of Windows 11. But I tend to look at deals, and there's more deals for pre-built PCs than build-your-own. Unless I want to hunt-and-peck over months to buy parts, waiting for the best deal for each, which I don't want to do.

Plus, any failures are on me to deal with. At least with pre-builts, I know all the parts work together.

I just built a new PC. Probably cost me a little more than a pre-built would have, but I know that I have good quality components, like my motherboard, power supply etc. With a pre-built sometimes you get lower quality memory, power supply etc.

I get choice paralysis. There's too many options, and too many complications and compounding factors to get parts that are all compatible with each other. And how am I supposed to now what parts are quality? Now I have to assess the quality of each part, reviews, etc., instead of for a single system. It's a lot of work and stress.

I checked out PC part picker, thinking I could save some money re-using some parts from my current PC. But my current 500W Power supply is missing an "additional 4-pin ATX power connector" that newer motherboards want. Or maybe only some want. But which ones?

I've got a build at MicroCenter in progress, and I'm already over $800 without a video card.

I found a pre-built ASUS S500TD for under $350 that I could do some basic upgrades to, except that the drive bays are to fit ASUS's proprietary panels for their optical drive and such. I found one purchaser that, um, improvised:
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...c5eced76ed.jpg

I'm not that inclined to hack away at the front panel of a case though.
