Re: PC Gaming Thread
Bought Ark: Survival Evolved and the Scorched Earth expansion pack this week. $17 for the pair. A couple of friends at work also bought it and one of them is setting up a private server so we don't have to play on the public ones, where apparently you get wrecked on a regular basis. Should be fun.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Thimbleweed Park is out today! http://store.steampowered.com/app/569860/
|
Re: PC Gaming Thread
^ I'm buying that for sure. I contributed to the library (along with about 1000 other random people), so it'll be fun to find that, and also it just looks like a damn fun game. :D
|
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Reviews look pretty good so far, 85 on Metacritic 20 reviews in.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/thimbleweed-park Love these old adventure games and Ron Gilbert, so i'll probably buy this. Looks more of what I hoped Broken Age would be. EDIT: Just noticed this is an XBox Play Anywhere title. I might go that route. Q: Will the game be play anywhere on Windows 10 and Xbox? A: Yes. If you bought the game on Xbox or via the Windows 10 Store. The Windows Store version will release a few weeks after Steam/Xbox. |

Re: PC Gaming Thread
So, is anyone else actually playing Thimbleweed Park yet?
I'm already stuck! As Deloris, Spoiler:
I'm playing on easy for my first round. Will do the tougher mode on my second try. Otherwise, I'm really enjoying it. I sent in a story for the library sometime last year, but I haven't been able to find it in there yet, and I'm not sure how to get the computer in that room to search for it. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Well, I completed Thimbleweed Park on easy (Casual). It was a lot of fun... and so frustrating in certain parts until the solution just 'clicked' so to speak. My only tip is, if it doesn't seem like there's a direct solution to a specific problem, move on to something else, as the solution might come up later.
I'm going to start a Hard run eventually; probably when it hits the Windows 10 store, since I bought it on XBox, and it's one of those "play anywhere" titles. I've already read that the puzzles are way more complicated in hard mode, but I'm up for the challenge. Definitely worth the $20 I spent. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
^Regarding difficulty levels. Does anyone know if playing on an easier difficulty level kind of "spoils" the higher difficulty levels, or are the solutions significantly different?
|
Re: PC Gaming Thread
They are significantly different. I've read a few spoilers for some of the puzzles and... yeah... they're way more complex, and involve items/interactions that are almost completely different. At least, that's how it was for the ones I read about. I'm sure some, by design, have to be similar, but I wouldn't worry too much about easy mode spoiling hard mode.
|
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Cool, thanks. Alright, I'll exercise my old-school adventure game muscles on the casual mode first.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Anyone here game in 1440? Used a bit of my tax return and treated myself to a GTX 1070 and a new monitor. I'll be going from 1080 60hz to 1440 165hz IPS panel with G-Sync. How big of an improvement in visuals are I in for?

Great. Looking forward to setting it all up. I went with the Viewsonic XG2703-GS. Should arrive next Wed.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Steam summer sale has started!
Store's going to be a mess for awhile and it'll probably take a couple hours for all the prices to propagate. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Yeah, been looking at it. I have about 20 games on my wish list and none of them are on sale. :(
EDIT: I take that back. Picked up Portal and Portal 2 for $2.37 incl tax. Happy with that ! |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
I haven't bought anything so far, but I've at least added Homeworld Remastered and Homeworld Deserts of Kharak to my cart. I'll be getting those two at least.
|
Re: PC Gaming Thread
So bad opened ended question here....
I really only go on Steam twice a year during the sales to purchase quirky indie games. Right now in my cart I have things like: Pony Island, Always Sometimes Monsters, Kindergarten and Undertale. Does anyone have any other recommendations (I like all genres)? I don't really keep up with the PC gaming scene so any feedback is appreciated. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
^ I loved Pony Island and Undertale. Haven't played the others you have listed there.
Super Win The Game is quite good. Plays kind of like Zelda II on the NES, and has the best CRT filter settings in a game I've ever seen. That dev has a new game called Gunmetal Arcadia, which I haven't played yet. Hotline Miami is great. Haven't played #2 yet. I also enjoyed games such as VVVVVV, Thomas Was Alone, and Thimbleweed Park. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
If you like Point and click adventure games I can recommend the following:
The 5 Blackwell games. The first 4 are in a bundle for $5 and the 5th has to be purchased separately Resonance Gemini Rue Primordia Technobabylon The Silent Age Anna's Quest Haven't played it yet. but Oxenfree is supposed to be good. Some other interesting games (maybe they're quirky, maybe not): Papers, Please Cook, Serve, Delicious! The Stanley Parable Please, Don't Touch Anything Botanicula (all of the Amanita Design games are wonderful) If you like puzzle games I highly recommend the Hexcells games. They're minesweeper-like games, but with more advanced mechanics. The 3-game bundle can be had for less than $3. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Thank you guys.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
I'll throw in recommendations for:
Life is Strange - One of the best story-rich adventure games I've ever played. Firewatch - a "Walking Simulator" with a pretty good story 80 Days - You're Phileas Fogg, attempting to go around a Victorian steampunk version of the world. Lots of different routes to travel, with lots of choose your own adventure style adventures that happen at the different cities you travel through. FTL - Faster Than Light, a very addictive "spaceship simulator roguelike". Though the difficulty does go up as you play, which prevented me from being able to finish it. If you like RPGs, check out Witcher 3. If you want Grand Strategy, you could take a look at Civilization 6 or Stellaris. I haven't played them much, but I have enjoyed what I played. (Also, if you like Star Trek, check out the mod for Stellaris called "New Horizons" - it's still alpha, but it does an amazing job of making the game feel very Star Trek) |

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Pretty lame Steam sale in my opinion. I don't play a lot of PC games but I usually have 15 or so games in my wishlist and about half of them aren't on sale and the one's that are barely are on sale at all (20-30%).

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Yeah, I haven't bought anything yet. I already own the most steeply discounted games.
I was thinking about picking up a Steam Link and controller, but I'm going to read some reviews first. Other than that, I've only added Civilization VI to my cart. |

I bought both the last time they went on sale. Steam Link is pretty good, but I find the controller disappointing, so I stick to my Xbox One controller and games that are compatible with it. It's just nice to have my PC games on my other TV.

Oh, thanks, I didn't know that other controllers were an option. I guess I'll give that a shot, since the Link is way cheaper than the controller. There have already been a few times I purchased something on the Xbox One which I already owned in Steam, just so I'd be able to easily play in the living room on my TV.
If it's from an Xbox One S, then it can connect to the Link via Bluetooth. If it's from an older Xbox One, I think it has to be hard wired. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Bought both Call Of Duty Modern Warfare games from Steam for $9.99 each.
Bought Diablo III Battle Chest from Blizzard for $19.99. That's it for me. I have enough games to play to last me a good while. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
I just remembered that I purchased Salt & Sanctuary a while back and haven't even loaded it up.
Anyone put time into it? Impressions? |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
After 5-6 years of owning an overlocked i5-2500k, the upgrade bug and urge to tinker led me to buy a Ryzen 7 1700 today. Was debating whether I should get a Kaby Lake i7-7700k, wait for Coffee Lake, or get a Ryzen 5 or 7 just for shits and giggles and decided to go AMD just to mix it up a bit.
So far so good, was agonizing between the 1600 or 1700 but decided to just get the extra cores. Now time to spend days playing around with overclocking and tweaking. Been awhile since I've had a chance to do this! Kept all my other components, but upgrading my GTX 970 and maybe moving to an NVMe SSD might happen down the line. |

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Stardock released the Star Control games on Steam today, along Star Control: Origins, their new game in the Star Control universe.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/27...ntrol_Origins/ The game is still in development, but it can be pre-purchased and you'll get access to an upcoming beta. So effectively Early Access without saying so. I'm keeping my eye on it, but I don't know how hopeful I am it'll be great. I think Paul and Fred/Toys for Bob are tangentially involved, but if I remember reading correctly back when this was first announced, while they have the Star Control license, they don't have the rights to use all the previous alien races. Edit: So it doesn't look like Fred and Paul have any involvement in the Stardock game. They are, however, working on a direct sequel to Star Control 2. And this game will contain all the races from Star Control 2, as they still own all that. https://dogarandkazon.squarespace.com/ Now this I'm excited about! |

To that end, you can get a refund on a pre-purchase up to 14 days after the official "release" of the title: http://store.steampowered.com/steam_refunds/ So a bit less risky than an Early Access purchase. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
I bought a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti to play The Witcher 3 and it seems like the drivers were automatically installed. Is this normal? I thought I was supposed to download them manually. The visuals are phenomenal on the new card. I'm new to PC gaming so I'm not sure I know what I'm doing.
Thank you. |

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Well there have been a lot of gaming laptop deals lately, so I picked up a new one, so far it's rocking everything (didn't know PS4 controllers worked so well with modern laptops) but I do need more RAM.
What the hell happened to RAM prices? Shits expensive these days for what should be the most popular current type (DDR4 SoDIMM). That aside, any current PC game recommendations to check out? |
