Is Kaby Lake on Intel's schedule to be released this year?
If so I'll wait to upgrade my CPU and Mobo, if it isn't going to debut until next year I'll go with a 6700K now. Not sure if Kaby is a die shrink over Skylake, or if it will be that much of an upgrade over it. |

I've been wanting to move back to NVIDIA for a long time. I haven't had one, for gaming, in more than 10 years. Always got great deals on AMD cards. Lately, 5 years or so, NVIDIA has been aggressive in courting game developers to use NVIDIA technology. AMD has complained about that. So there's that sense that some games play better in NVIDIA cards. Most mainstream/popular games, of course. Not sure what's the latest in SLI vs Crossfire. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Really appreciate all the info, guys. Thanks a lot.
I think I'll pick up a monitor first, just not right now. I really like that Dell, but it's just too much right now. We'll see what the budget looks like in a couple weeks and go from there. I'm really excited to update my GPU. That will be the most do-it-yourself thing I've done with a computer next to plugging in a mouse and keyboard. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
My son just finished a new build. He went with an i7-6700, 1080, 16gb of ddr4, a pny ssd 480gb, and an asus 27" 2k.
Fast? yep. We are amazed. Next will be a vr unit. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
970 owners can get $30 back for the 3.5 GB memory fiasco. Although I don't think I see any info on how to actually make a claim right now.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/8GJNqk
Ok, so these are all my current components with the new GPU and Monitor added. PCPartPicker says no incompatibilities were found, and it should come in a ~358W. So, I should be good to go? Also, my the ASUS website for my motherboard says it supports both the i5 and i7 chips. Does that mean I could swap one of those in without replacing the motherboard? And is there much of a step up from an i5 to an i7? Sorry for all the questions - I just don't want to screw anything up. Thanks! |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
I assume you already own everything other than the GPU and Monitor?
You can swap in another CPU as long as it is also socket LGA1150. Your RAM is pretty slow. If you are keeping that motherboard long term, I'd upgrade that. If you go with a newer motherboard, you'd upgrade to DDR4. |

For gaming you should be fine with an i5.

http://disney.wikia.com/wiki/Aladdin_(video_game) The PC versions (Amiga and DOS) were also based on the Genesis version. The only differences in the PC version from the console one are a different HUD and improved music and sound effects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJsuOYs5EnM I doubt the SNES version would ever officially be up for sale for PC, but the Genesis/MegaDrive version could conceivably be added to the SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics hub on Steam if Disney and Sega reach a deal. The three games on GOG are Aladdin, Lion King, and Jungle Book: https://www.gog.com/promo/20160804_l...he_jungle_book |

That's interesting. I grew up with the Genesis version so i'm good with that

Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove is actually the result of a Kickstarter about a year and a half ago:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...ve/description The original creator is helming the new game: http://www.polygon.com/features/2015...e-greg-johnson The "coming to PC and console" tag at the end of the ad is promising, since the Kickstarter actually failed to reach any of the console stretch goals. The Kickstarter did promise Windows, OS X, and Linux versions. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
^ Adult Swim Games picked it up and probably pushed for the console releases, which is a huge perk for the devs -- Adult Swim advertises the hell out of their titles.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Within the last month or so I went ahead and upgraded both my monitor and GPU. Picked up the Dell S2716DG monitor and a GTX 1070.
Overall I'm pretty happy with everything. Out of the two upgrades, the biggest difference has been with the monitor by far. I got it about a month ago and I absolutely love it. Big time resolution bump plus 144Hz have both been hugely noticeable. I just put the 1070 in today. I'm getting 50-70 fps with settings pretty much maxed in Deus Ex, and around 115 fps in Overwatch. Does that sound right? Honestly, I expected to get better performance. Could my processor (i5-4670) be holding things back? Hopefully, I'm done for this year. I really expected to drag this upgrade process out over the next few months, but I figured let's just get it out of the way. I got a nice deal on the monitor and I got the card under MSRP. Can't complain about that. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
If you are playing at 2560 x 1440 those should be good numbers.
Also, are you using G-Sync? You may be able to get bigger numbers if you turn it off, but then again, you have to choose your trade offs. That's the thing with PC, you have to choose what you want enabled. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
Yeah, I'm playing at full resolution with g sync.
I did some searching online earlier today and found others who had the same questions as I did. Turns out, like you said, everything's fine. There's a setting in Overwatch to change (forgot what it was atm) that bumped my fps up to 130ish. And I guess Deus Ex is just a hog and taxes even even the more beefier builds. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
So we just got a new gaming PC, will be here Thursday. Intel i7 6700 4-4.2 MHZ, 32 gigs ram, 2 tb hybrid + 500 gig SSD, GEForce 1080 8 meg, 27 inch Benq gaming monitor, the works. So far the only game I'm excited to play is Super Tetris  I have a netbook that I can't even use iTunes and spreadsheets on, which I need for school (the spreadsheets), so I use my PHONE for schoolwork, which is more powerful than my Netbook. I'm most excited about adding the cheapie second monitor and having a spreadsheet in one monitor and my textbook in the other.
Soooo I've been looking around and we're getting Skyrim just because it looks pretty and it's 20 bucks. I'm interested first in room escape games, but really pretty and involved room escape games that make use of the PC's capabilities. Any suggestions? Nothing like horror escape where you're outrunning something and can get killed, but here you are trapped in a room, get out. Thanks! :) |

As it's only just streaming the video, your fps is going to be dependent on what you get when you're normally gaming on PC. I have a Cisco gigabit router, so that's probably the more important part. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
I pushed Steam Returns pretty hard over the holidays.
*) Doom - Returned. I wasn't looking for unreal tournament. *) Helldivers - Returned. Twin stick couch coop. The "gotta reload every 1.5 seconds" thing was pretty lame, even if the universe was cool. *) Kentucky Route Zero. Returned. Not a fucking game. An interactive storybook. Crrepy, atmospheric, but not a fucking game. And I STILL like Zork. I tried this since it was on several "bests" lists. *) The Witness. Returned. Yes, it's better than Myst. But it's still mindless puzzles. And I don't give a fuck about the experience or message. Tried because it was on several "bests lists. *) Overcooked. Returned. Another couch coop. Sluggish controls ruined the experience. *) Renegade Ops. Returned. Another couch coop. Another of the twin stick not fun shooters. *) Dying Light. Returned. 6 hour long intro. Lame parkour. I just didn't care. *) Party Saboteurs. Returned. Couch competitive. Not as good as Hidden in Plain sight. The graphics are better, but the game modes of HIPS are better. *) Miner Warfare. Returned. Couch competitive. Sluggish and a concept better implemented in the better couch games. Papers Please was fun as a family watch & comment game. Hidden in Plain Sight is GREAT fun for couch multiplayer. Darkest Dungeon is nice, but a bit slow. I ended up keeping it. CoD: World at War (solo play) was also a keeper. Anyway, the ability to return games has made it MUCH easier for me to invest some cash in a game to try and find something fun for me. I think I'm spending more on games because I'm no longer afraid I'm going to get burned by something shitty, unfun, and expensive. |

Even at 2560x1440, the big images on this page annoy me (since I usually do side by side browser windows).

Re: PC Gaming Thread
You're right, but it's the best I had. I guess I was referring to the very fast paced twitch FPS experience. There's also an element of "enter a room, door locks, monsters show up, run around killing them" that doesn't match UT.
I recognize this is a thing. It's not the Stalker/Far Cry experience that I'm looking for. |
Re: PC Gaming Thread
I finally got around to Bioshock Infinite.
I found the controls .. sluggish? There's a lot of money and resources ... no real challenge there. Too many set-piece like combats and very linear. The cut scenes and ... programmed video stuff (mini-cut scenes?) REALLY drove me nuts in this. Couldn't stand it. On the plus side I think they had a decent idea with the girl in combat. Not enough choices/options, but I get, and like, where they were going with it. While I HATED The cut-scene like stuff I thought they did an EXCELLENT job or giving both her and your character nice arcs DURING the game. All of the little stuff and comments they made over the course of the games. In contract, I found the cut-scene shit/narrative quite weak. Plus, it was fun executing all the bigots, armed or not. I give it a 7/10. |
