PS3 is where it's at for multimedia, even now. If you can get one cheap, get the awesome bluetooth remote for it as well. If nothing else, you can use it to save wear and tear on your new gen consoles.

Honestly, the biggest mystery about PS4 to me is that it's missing some basic multimedia features that would seemingly benefit Sony's other divisions like...

- A remote that works with Sony TVs like the one on PS3
- Firmware to make the PS3 bluetooth remote compatible
- 3D blu ray support

I'm not a fan of the newest super-slims at all. My kid has one in his bedroom, and its disk drive is louder, and it has a cheap looking sliding cover on top, but (and this is big) it comes with 250GB or 500GB. It will also be "newer", if you're buying used.

Don't bother with the original fats.

The middle slims are my favorites. They're quiet and are the best looking of the bunch. I have a 120GB, but I'd look for a 250GB or 320GB if I were shopping now, especially as you download all of those free games. As you probably know, all HDs are easily replaceable with TB drives.

Note that you can use your PS4 controller wired for quite a few PS3 games. I do that and keep my multimedia remote handy for PS button functionality.

I'd really settled on Batman, Destiny and maybe 1886 as my games for the rest of the year along with minor $20-30 purchases like AC4 and Rayman, but that looks really impressive.

No worries, and enjoy your PS3.

It's not as good a gaming console as the 360 with a worse controller and no party chat being the main problems, but it makes up for it with free online, tons of free PS+ games, a bunch of solid exclusives and the best multimedia features of any console to date.

Choose After 10, 30, or 60 minutes

Mine is set for 10 minutes of inactivity .... start the movie and the only disruption is a pop up window after 10 minutes saying the controller shut down
hit the PS button after the movie to wake up the controller

This is what I do too. :up:

My TV has a similar setting if it doesn't have a video source, and I'm notorious for letting it turn itself off as well. Drives my other crazy. "Aren't you going to turn the TV off?!?!" Nope.

Still want a remote though, or even better, PS3 remote sync.

So how long does the controller last when playing a game? On average I mean. I have a dedicated 3D Blu-Ray player for movies, so I won't use the PS4 or Xbone.

Also, should I just leave it in standby mode?

I've had to charge my PS4 controller twice since I got the system. I don't think the battery life is bad at all. But if dimming the light can extend it even further, I am all for that.

You get a low battery notice in about 6-7 hours and it dies at 7-8 hours in my experience.

But if you're only getting one controller, don't run a cord from your console unless it makes sense for your setup. I keep a micro-usb phone charger like this plugged in under my couch. I'll bet you have one, and if not, they're pretty easy to get under $5.

Any reporting on if that might be supply related? Despite them being available online off and on for the past couple weeks, I have yet to see one in a store, though I haven't been in anywhere this week. Just checked online for my area out of curiosity and it looks like all the Targets are still sold out, but all the Best Buys, ~75% of the Gamestops and ~50% of the Walmarts have consoles in stock. Not sure if that's a temporary boost to coincide with Infamous launching, or if they've finally become more readily available for people.

Eh. It's pretty tame as far as console warring goes, and it's factual even if it lacks context and is relatively meaningless in the big scheme of things. Didn't a Final Fantasy just release on Vita?

I mostly just think it's great for the Vita. That's a nice little console, and I'd like to see it do better whether it's through AAA games (not likely) or indies (more likely). And where the PS4 might sell some Vitas in western markets, I could see it going the other way around in Japan.

Again, eh. It's a discussion worth having in this here vidja game discussion forum, and I can't imagine any sensible PS4 owner is the least bit worried about it. Content will sell the PS4 in Japan, just as it always has.

Agree that it's an obvious jab with a dumb comment, but it's just a console, and all news is worth talking about. It would suck if nobody here posted bad stuff about the PS4 or if we missed something worth talking about because people get butthurt.

I recognize that it's a tough balance to get right, but we're a very small community and people are easy to "ignore".

Alright.

So the PS4 isn't going nuts in Japan like it is literally everywhere else, and the Vita had a good week. This is an interesting fact. What factors could be at play and what does it mean?

• Has Japan really lost interest in home consoles?
• Did the Vita just have a big release last week?
• Is there currently appealing "next gen" PS4 software for the Japanese audience?
• Is Sony diverting stock to the west after their Japan launch?
• Is there residual butthurt over the late launch?
• Will it matter over the longer term (will the PS4 sell when it has Japanese software)?

They're like us, they buy stuff when it's worth buying. While there was a huge surge of next-gen multi-console games at launch for both consoles (especially sport titles), it has been fairly quiet since then. Thief and Tomb Raider are all that really come to mind for me on the PS4, and I don't know that they received the Japanese treatment. Similarly, the Japanese launch had a few big titles (Yakuza next-gen, for instance) but when you got right down to it, Knack had no reason to sell as well as it did though I do believe it was a pack-in with some consoles.

Also it was Soul Sacrifice Delta that was released in Japan on the Vita that seems to be stirring up sales.

Knack has sold 388,897 copies in Japan thus far, Yakuza: Ishin has sold 104,294 copies on the PS4 thus far. And honestly for as small as Japan is, it seems to continually sell as many home consoles as its US counterparts.

On a side note, the release of Titanfall was HUGE for the Xbox One in the US (113,549 units sold to PS4's 50,705).
