The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong

It seems like one of those things where, if you're looking at the person wearing the headset it's hard not to roll your eyes, but when you are the one wearing it, it might be a game changer. If they do it right, I think VR will be the next big thing in gaming...

Default settings are tough and it can be very involved but all the settings are adjustable. While it is true that the baserunning can be frustrating I think it had improved. I used to buy it every year but skipped a couple of years and rented last years and had fun for a month. Looking forward to rtying out this years.

The other VR stuff that I see bandied about - souped up motion controls, walking, running, and jumping - I don't care for. Those would be great for training and workouts, but not for extended gaming.

Some impressions of Sony's VR headset - http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/19/55...to-oculus-rift
Looks like some pros and some cons versus the Oculus Rift, but fairly impressed at the progress they've made so far.

Reading about it, it sounds like VR is interesting for those who want it, and certainly more immersive then the motion controls we have today, but I'm skeptical about it being anything more then a novelty for a very small portion of gamers.
Looks like some pros and some cons versus the Oculus Rift, but fairly impressed at the progress they've made so far.
The obvious, unavoidable point of comparison for Project Morpheus is the Oculus Rift, which Sony now says it hopes to stay in friendly competition with. Morpheus and the Rift use 1080p screens and similar head-tracking technologies, but their strengths and weaknesses vary. Both headsets have gone a long way towards eliminating lag, but Morpheus is still a little blurrier than the newest version of the Rift. Conversely, its superior lenses have actually done better at removing the blocky "screen door" effect, even if the display obviously can't measure up to a 2D counterpart. It's great at blocking out light without feeling stifling, something the Rift still struggles with. Its 90-degree field of view, however, is a definite detriment. The first Oculus Rift developer kit left thin black bars in your peripheral vision, but Project Morpheus has unavoidable, often distracting black half-moons. It's still impressive, but it's got to get a lot better before I'd call it truly immersive.
Sony's peripherals create something of an ecosystem for Morpheus: the PlayStation Move provides motion control, and the console's camera peripheral tracks your head position. It's a fairly versatile system: you can lean over a railing, crouch, or turn completely around. It doesn't, however, seem to track as precisely as the Rift. What you see on the screen can progressively drift away from where you actually feel like you are. My experience with the Move controllers was more scattershot. They're a good idea for virtual reality, giving you a combination of free motion and haptic feedback, but the medieval tech demo meant to showcase them became virtually unplayable when you tried to pick up a sword and saw your disembodied hands shoot across the room.

So, games! What's it like using Morpheus to play games? It's pretty neat! Well, that's to say, "It's a lot like playing games in the Oculus Rift headset, especially the newer versions of the Rift." In The Deep, I took a trip to the bottom of the ocean in a metal cage; when I bent down, my in-game knees bent (as tracked by the PlayStation Camera). When I looked up, my perspective turned skyward and the lamp mounted to my virtual head followed (the lighting was perhaps the most impressive part, with cage bars occluding properly and all).
In The Castle, I picked up two PlayStation Move controllers to act as hands, which enabled me to bend over, pick up a sword and take a dummy down a few notches. If I moved back a few steps, my in-game avatar moved back a few steps. One major change in Morpheus compared with other VR headsets is full-body tracking, which does legitimately add to the immersion effect.

If you haven't experienced it or something similar, like high quality 3D gaming, it's hard to imagine. But the sense of immersion and presence is remarkable. For people just into twitch gaming like COD or CS, it probably doesn't matter, but if you like RPGs, adventure, and puzzle games, it offers basically the only avenue for these genres to really mature. You can be in the game, and that's a pretty big shift from where we're at now.

I don't think I could handle games like Tomb Raider or other scary or intense types of games with my mind thinking that I'm actually going through it. I know some people out there want that experience but at my age I just don't think I could deal with that shit.

Yoshida says Driveclub not delayed for VR, but also says that they made a VR version:

Yoshida also discussed the virtual reality version of Driveclub that Evolution Studios made using what is now known as Project Morpheus. When trying it for himself during a trip to their UK office, he said it worked well when driving at low speeds. He explained that he was able to look around the world and enjoy its scenery.
However, when he put his foot on the gas, so to speak, the experience fell apart and he began to feel the effects of motion sickness, he said. "It's kind of difficult and sickening," Yoshida said about his experiences at this level.
Right now, Evolution Studio is "not working on Morpheus at all," and is instead putting "all the effort" into finishing the game.
Explaining the Driveclub delay in October 2013, Yoshida said, "the extra time we're giving the team means the visuals and overall experience are only going to get better. We can assure you that it will be worth the wait."

Well broke down and bought a PS4. Used, $296 off Amazon from Amazon, hopefully it's alright. Feel jipped by those lucky SOBs that got em for $274, but it was close enough.

Congrats guys, and welcome to new gen!
I paid the early adopter tax, but it was worth it for Warframe, NFS Rivals and Resogun. I wish I could add BF4 to that list, but I simply haven't given it the attention it deserves. Same for Outlast.

Nice I'm still holding off for something like the next Uncharted, but getting a PS4 for under $300 is so damn tempting. Especially since I want to play The Show.

Yeah, I realized that the PS3 was like $299 until a year ago, so I don't think I'll be beating the price anytime soon. I'm looking forward to giving InFamous and The Order a shot. I also bought my PS3 (60gb) refurb'd about 6 months after launch for I believe $150 off retail, it's a nice way to get started in the next gen. That thing surprisingly still works.

- The video app is kind of amazing. It has replaced demos for me, where I'll simply watch somebody stream the game and listen to them interact with the audience.
- The Dualshock 4 works wired to the PS3 with a ton of games, and it really extends the life of the console (at least for me).
- The way the library works eliminated all of my concerns about hard drive size. Your recent games are right there on the first bar, and your other games go in the library tab. If you delete them, their icon remains in the library with a download button and you can play most of them after a partial load, so you don't hesitate to delete stuff.
- The touchpad is kind of awesome.
- It has 3 "legs" to facilitate vertical standing, and depending on how you place it horizontally, you may have to put something under a corner to eliminate vibration. I put speaker "feet" on mine, which might also keep it cooler (in theory).
- The light on the controller adds almost nothing IMO, but it's also not as annoying as I thought it would be in terms of reflecting off TV.
- The battery life on the controller is pretty bad. I'd estimate 7-8 hrs with a low battery notification in 6-7 hrs. I have a cell phone charger under my couch, and I'd also bet that you'll want a second controller.
- The concerns about the rubber material on the thumbsticks is legit. They smooth out after a few hundred hours, and sometimes even break apart. Either way, look into "Grip Its" on Amazon. You get 2 pairs for $5, and they improve the sticks in several ways while also protecting them.
