A lot of people really, really seem to love Knack.

I think, ultimately, both are fine to play for a rent or maybe a budget buy, but certainly not for a full $60.

Re: RYSE: The Gloriously Official 900p Exclusive Thread (Xbox One)

$60 only if you really are a graphics whore.

As I mentioned before, there are some people that absolutely will love this game. I was surprised by the Kotaku review, they have been shitting all over Microsoft this year, but they explained really well why they recommend the game.

Numeric scores aside, I'm not convinced because no one mentioned that there's an amazing story there. I don't care if I'm only pressing "A", if they are telling me a great story, and the graphics are amazing, I would be in.

That's why I fell in love with the first Assassin's Creed game.

Yeah. So many sites basically review on a 7 to 10 scale that anything 6 or below is awful. Knack got worse scores than Ryse overall, but I don't see how Ryse is average/above-average.

I'm such a ratings and review whore. I almost never buy a game at full price if it's rated below a 7.5 average.

Sounds like they're both shit games that some will enjoy but are probably not worth the $60 asking price. At least Ryse has the gorgeous visuals going for it, while Knack looks like a PS3 game.

Those scores ( besides those wacky folks at Kotaku) are pretty bad, about what I was expecting and a fairly clear sign to not buy this game at full price. It is #3 in my Game Fly Q

I wasn't trying to say this game is getting great scores or anything. 5/10 or 2.5/5 is an average score, no matter what has happened to game scores over the years. I mean, if a 7/10 is average then what the hell is the use of that ratings scale?

Semantics aside, no it's not getting great reviews. Most are average, a few higher than that. It's not getting savaged though like Knack did and NBA Live will. Plus the reviews for Knack have been unfair IMO.

While I agree, that absolutely is the state of things. 5/10 is a mathematical average, but borderline-no one uses that to signify an average game in the reviewing world.

Then rating to 10 needs to die. It's useless.

Did you ever go to school? Getting 55% on a test isn't "better than average", it's an "F".

Not if that person averaged a 20% on all of their grades! ;) I kid

Gimme an "F" for fine, as in sorry I brought it up.

I just know as someone who has reviewed movies and games on a 5 star scale for years now, giving something a 2.5 means "just missed the mark/almost good". I guess I failed.

only if you're averaging single instances of the numbers 1-10. I would bet the actual average of video game reviews is closer to 7.

People generally hold movie and videogame ratings to different standards. A 2.5 star game is a lot more damning than a 2.5 star movie.

Re: RYSE: The Gloriously Official 900p Exclusive Thread (Xbox One)

I know Jeff Gerstmann has talked about this before when it comes to game ratings. They rate 1-5 stars, no halves. 3 stars is an average/good game. A recommendation. But when that gets converted to metacritic is becomes 60/100 which means utter garbage.

Re: RYSE: The Gloriously Official 900p Exclusive Thread (Xbox One)

Which is why I prefer the Buy It, Rent It, or Skip It scale. Just give one of those recommendations, and stick to your guns. Fuck metacritic and all that other garbage.

Re: RYSE: The Gloriously Official 900p Exclusive Thread (Xbox One)

Yeah, there is a pretty big disconnect between the star and % rating scales. Regardless, both Knack and this seem to be pretty weak games.

But the scores for Ryse do seem to be more consistently middle of the road than Knacks bi-polar reaction.

My only point was that a lot of gaming sources seem to go by a school-type A-B-C-D-F grading system rather than a movie-like 5-star system. You're right, it's inconsistent. But if you look overall, the median scores for all high-profile game is probably much closer to 70 than to 50.

Sorry for the snarkiness of my earlier posts, chuck. Just early-morning, half-awake sarcasm. I really enjoy your posts and didn't mean to offend you (or anyone else).

This game is currently #5 on Amazon's videogame bestsellers list. The only XB1 game ahead of it is CoD: Ghosts.

I was wrong, actually. The CoD: Ghosts that's ahead of it is the 360 version.

Ryse is the #1 bestselling XB1 game on Amazon.

Re: RYSE: The Gloriously Official 900p Exclusive Thread (Xbox One)

Way before the consoles were shown and making my choice to go to the PS4, I remember when this game was announced...and it created a great deal of buzz. In fact it was one game that kept my interest in the Xbox One. It was something different than games we've seen on the PS3 and 360...and the first screen were a sight to behold.

Despite going PS4 I really wanted this game to succeed...mainly that it would bring about more titles like this with large battle sequences and a hack & slash instead of the dozen of shoot em-ups we see. Sadly all the reviews I've read have shocked me...almost as much as those for Knack. I hope those tha play will post their experience and see if it matches up. From what I've read the one from Joystiq pretty much summed it up but hope they're wrong...

If Crytek's Xbox One action game is to be believed, the history books have it all wrong. The reason for Rome's fall wasn't decadence, economic problems or social division; it was sheer boredom.

I expect Ryse to be short, mindless fun with amazing visuals. I don't need 900 systems in my video games. Sometimes I just want to hack a bunch of ancient dudes to death.
