"like this"? No. It's a good length for an action/adventure title, but it's a bit short for an open world game like this.
I recall that the last game could've used more missions as a lot of the world was left un-explored.

anyhow why not just think that this could have been a 25th release date and that we are actually getting this early

The story part might be 10-12 hours, but if it's anything like past Infamous games, there will be a ton of collectibles to keep you busy beyond that. Plus, as previously noted, it's built for a second playthrough.

Yeah, regarding that : a word to inFAMOUS newbies : the worst thing you can do in an inFAMOUS game is flip-flop back and forth between good and evil. Pick a side and stay with it to max out your powers. Don't play this like The Walking Dead.

If you are trophy hunting, the common advice is to play through normal/good and then hard/bad, because it's easier to be bad (as it should be). But playing good requires a lot of patience and precision, and I think I want to go full evil in this one and just cut loose.
I'm torn whether to preorder on PSN and get the $10 back or to trade in Killzone at Gamestop for $30. I have a few other games to trade/sell, so I'll probably do the latter, but I always feel dirty dealing with Gamestop.

First playthrough, play easy difficulty, evil path, wreak havoc, collect absolutely everything.
Second playthrough, hard difficulty, good path, focus on story, don't worry about collectibles.
(I've done 100% on all Infamous games, including Festival of Blood)

I think you have that mixed up. Playing evil is more difficult because the random civilians in the world will also attack you. It's much easier to do your Hard playthrough on the Good path because the civilians will occasionally help you with enemies. That's my experience anyway.

I was following the advice on Podcast Beyond, and their rationale was that it was easy to just wreck everything indiscriminately but much harder to be precise. That mirrors my experience where I want to just chuck grenades at everything and do the "ultimate" moves at every opportunity, but I always hold back because of the negative karma.

I don't think precision really plays that big of a factor. I don't ever recall "accidentally" killing so many people that it affected karma.
I suppose it really doesn't matter. Even on Hard the previous games were not difficult at all.

in Infamous 2, you would unlock skills that your weapons don't damage innocents as much. I would probably go with Chess' path to platinum, mainly because I want my first playthrough to focus on the story. I'd probably say:
1. Normal difficulty, good path, collect as much as possible
2. Hard Diff, evil path, just do story
3. clean up extras with my save from #1.

As an added bonus, I'll get to wreck Seattle and treat its citizens horribly, because fuck the Seahawks.

Then, If I like the game enough, I'll plow through a good playthrough on hard just to see the good story. They apparently did multiple versions of most cut scenes.

Re: inFAMOUS Second Son (3/21/2014)
I just checked my trophies. Apparently in the first game I did the hard playthrough on the good side, and in the second game I did the opposite and finished my hard playthrough while evil. I guess it really doesn't matter. Either way, you should focus on all the collectibles and whatever miscellaneous trophies there are while on an easier setting. If you're playing Hard (preferably the second time around), you should just stick to the story and do just enough to get you through the game.

There's something about playing "evil" in games that I just don't like. I seem to almost always opt for the "good" side of the options, unless there's a "badass" option, like the "renegade" options in Mass Effect.

me too, but its why I'm really digging GTA5. I can be good as Franklin, neutral as Michael, and a complete evil dick as Trevor, and feel like I'm fitting into character.

Gamestop has a +30% for trade ins toward Infamous, so Killzone was spared for now. Had planned to trade it in and get Infamous for $30.
I traded Borderlands 2 (PS+), Tomb Raider (PS+), Ico & SotC (PS+), NFS Most Wanted (already been on Euro PS+), and Smash Bros Brawl for just over $50. So Infamous for $10.![Up](/images/smilies/thumpsup.gif)

now I'm thinking of playing through Good on Hard difficulty first, and then doing evil on Normal just to complete those trophies. I assume Hard will be easier if I'm doing it on the playthrough that I'm collecting everything and doing all the side missions.

And chess :, that screen cap is awesome and really the first game that truly looks "next gen". Yes, Ryse was pretty and detailed, but it all looked pre-rendered, up close in closed-off corridors, and most of the eye candy was in the cutscenes. This open world game really looks impressive in scope, lighting and detail. It looks like a game that wasn't really possible on a PS3.

That kind of dynamic global illumination, texture quality, particle effects and draw distance weren't remotely possible last gen, especially in an open world game. I thought Killzone looked pretty great, but it's crazy how good this game looks.
Solid interview with one of the creators (with bonus footage of a person stuffing themselves into a Titanfall box):
