I feel bad for those poor people whose jobs got yanked from under them. Disney are really stripping things down, they probably wanted nothing except the film franchise proper, the toys, and the ability to merchandise the hell out of everything. I hope those poor people can get work.

Re: Disney Shuts Down LucasArts

man... Super Empire Strikes Back is my all-time favorite game - one of the few games I actually beat. Super ROTJ was good too, as was Star Wars on NES... Star Wars Racer on N64 was fun.

Jedi Outcast II is one of my favorite all-time PC games. I saw that Raven released the source code for free, not sure what that means exactly.

I am not sure exactly which games Lucasarts developed on their own. I think other companies developed a lot of the older games. Indiana Jones on NES was good too, not sure if Lucasarts did that.

Disney will just put the Lucasarts logo on future games and let someone elese develop them. I don't see it as the end of SW games.

Edit: Oh, and KOTOR, that was good, too, man.

I remember getting Ballblazer with my new Commodore 128 for Christmas, and then Rescue on Fractalus later on.

Who did the remakes of the first and second game with new artwork? I'd like them to try making a new one.

Telltale Games did the newer Tales of MI series. I thought LA did the remakes of 1 & 2 themselves.

I'd love to see Grim Fandango get licensed out for iOS.

No big loss, really. Tie Fighter aside (which was almost 20 years ago) (and maybe KOTOR, though that was from Bioworks), they haven't really made any great games with the franchise. The SW Battlefield game looked interesting thought, but I'm not a fan of multiplayer games, so again, no big loss.

Color me impressed. I don't think I ever did or if I did the memory has been blocked out by how hard the game was! Maybe I beat it with a Game Genie. That counts, right?

Did you see the Angry Video Game Nerd talk about the ending of the NES version? Yeah, he wasn't happy (duh):

As for the House of Mouse shutting down LucasArts, if they can do it better in house or with licensing, then go for it. And while I never really played Monkey Island or Grim Fandango, what I saw was unique and clever and I hope titles like that don't get lost in the shuffle.

Was Maniac Mansion through LucasArts, too?

They haven't made those games in years. The people that made those games split off and formed Telltale games a while ago. Telltale is alive and well making new games in that style (Walking Dead, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, etc.). They even made a new Monkey Island a few years back (LucasArts licensed it out to them).

And yes, Maniac Mansion was also LucasArts.

I was going to say... afraid Grim Fandango would get lost in the shuffle? That happened over a decade ago.

Re: Disney Shuts Down LucasArts

What concerns me the most is the last line of the MSN article :

Disney has been moving away from games that are expensive to make for consoles, like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and toward apps.

One example of the licensing model is Rovio Entertainment Ltd.'s November launch of "Angry Birds Star Wars."
If that's what publishers choose to be focusing on (in-app purchases), then we as gamers are truly fucked.

Hopefully, the stupid app bubble will burst soon enough and then they'll make real SW games. You know they'll have them for Episode VII.

Re: Disney Shuts Down LucasArts

The benefit is that hopefully LucasArts will license out more of their old properties to interested developers that might want to revive some of them, since they haven't the best at managing their own projects and game development internally.

Most of my feelings are out of nostalgia, and like some of you said LucasArts hasn't been a good company in years, and as someone that's not a big Star Wars guy, over a decade for me.

Like I said, I never played those games but I'm aware there's a fanbase and what wouldn't be cool is if Disney saw LucasArts = Star Wars and everything that wasn't Star Wars just sort of went away. Didn't know there had already been some moves like that.

Developers will approach them and this will happen. It's not like Disney was actively trying to get DuckTales remade.

LucasArts had more of a reason to be around than RARE imo.

I feel for those poor people. My wife had a sweet job working in the front office of the California Angels in the early 90s. I used to go to games every night and sat in the third row in front of the on-deck circle. I got tickets for all my friends. It was AMAZING. Then Jackie Autry sold the team to Disney and my wife, along with almost everyone she worked with got fired. Then a few years later, as soon as they became convinced that Ted Turner wasn't starting a rival sports network to ESPN, they sold the team to Artie Moreno.

I like Disney films, home video products and theme parks, but as a corporation, they're as bad as anyone.

Well, consider their output as of late. They closed the studio that was responsible for Epic Mickey. We are far from the heyday of Disney videogames, much like we are far from the heyday of Star Wars games (and the telling part is that the main two games in development at the time were both Star Wars games anyway). Where's my Water may be their biggest recent gaming IP. We'll see how that Skylanders-like game does.

Re: Disney Shuts Down LucasArts

I meant more big-picture. With the demise of THQ and all these studios closing, I'm worried we're going to see far fewer console games published. And while fewer crappy licensed movie tie-ins is probably a good thing and while we'll still see blockbuster franchises published, getting fewer original games like Vanquish, Heavy Rain, Catherine, Dragon's Dogma, Dishonored and Wrath of the White Witch will be a significant loss. Especially when the games we get instead are more of the same and uninspired sequels.

I fully expect Nintendo to hire on Spector and some of the others.

I pretty much agree. This is the best chance for a proper KOTOR 3 being completed by "someone".

Dark Forces seems really low on that list, but I suppose a lot of that depends on your age.

That's the speculation. Disney wants there to be a Star Wars drought so everyone is clamoring for the movie when it comes out.

It's leaving a bad taste in my mouth and my anticipation of Episode VII continues to diminish.
