What I do think is the headset that came with the 360 was a gigantic piece of shit. Everyone I know has either used the wireless option Microsoft has provided or they've gone with a third-company like Turtle Beach.
The new Kinect's mic and noise-cancellation are pretty powerful, so ideally, you don't need a headset to chat with a friend. However, for those people who actually game on multiplayer quite often, those would never use the stock headset.

I don't agree or disagree.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Nevermind:
According to IGN, current-gen gaming headsets may be useless for the Xbox One. Voice chat through headsets is dependent on connection through the controller, and since the port will be different on Xbox One controllers, gaming headset microphones will be useless. While there is the possibility of Microsoft manufacturing some sort of adapter, IGN was told that the new port on Xbox One controllers is to gain more control over the peripheral market.
"Manufacturers will not only need to develop entirely new products for the new connection standard," wrote IGN's Scott Lowe, "but use licensing and authentication protocols from Microsoft, potentially driving up costs for consumers. The licensing program could also limit the variety and competitive nature of the accessory market since all manufacturers would be required to adhere to Microsoft's terms."
When asked for comment, a Microsoft spokesperson only offered up vague details. "We are working with 3rd party headset manufacturers to create new headsets that will take full advantage of the Xbox One technology.
"We will share more details in the future."

well that sucks. i assumed it, since we hadn't heard anything about the headsets, but still sucks to have them confirm it. i don't want to chat through my kinect. i usually turn up the volume fairly loud on my HT when gaming, so i don't want to have to strain to hear voices over the ingame music/sound.

The Xbox 360 didn't come with a headset did it? Or Wifi. Or a HDD ($299). Or an HDMI port.

Looking forward to the new system . PS fanboys saying the damage ia alrady down have thier heads up their ass. Better exclusives, better Kinect, and better controller -- a no brainer for me.

Consoles evolve. PS4 is putting their best foot forward, Xbox is hoping Kinect is enough.
It took them nearly 2 years to release the HDMI port, the funniest thing is the power supply has dropped from 203 W (original) to 115W (current)

I waited in line at a Walmart and got screwed out of the better system. Some kid that was in line left forever and came back just as they were starting to sell them. he claimed he left his jacket there and the stupid employees let that slide. The last system that came with the hard drive was sold to the person in front of me. I almost walked out without a system, but after waiting in line all night I bought the core system.

Wait, there's gotta be a different explanation for the proprietary headset port That certainly doesn't sound like the benevolent Microsoft we've come to expect.

That was my original system as well. Though I thought it did come with a headset, but may be remembering wrong.

I missed mine on launch day, found a Friday that Best Buy was getting a new shipment and wound up with the Core because I went in 10 minutes before work instead of doing an all niter. Bought the 20gb HDD separate.

The launch consoles in 2005:
Pro: Wireless controller, wired headset, ethernet cable, Component HD AV Cable, 20GB HD. The Pro models gained HDMI outputs after 2007.
Core: Wired controller, Composite AV Cable.
The next round of consoles in 2007 (everything post-2007 had HDMI out):
Elite: Wireless controller(s), wired headset, Composite AV Cable, 120GB/250GB HD.
Arcade: Wireless controller, Composite AV Cable, Xbox Live Arcade compilation disc, 256 - 512MB memory on board.
The second-generation consoles (the Slim) in 2010:
Non-Kinect models: Wireless controller(s), wired headset, Composite AV Cable, 250GB/320GB HD.
Kinect models: Wireless controller, Kinect, Kinect Adventures (and possible other games), three-month Live membership, 4GB memory on board.
I'm tired of this "Well, the 360 came with a headset so the One should as well!" rhetoric. Some did, others didn't. End of discussion. You want to chat with your friends? The Kinect can do that. You don't like that? Buy a wireless headset. At least MS is still providing you an option to chat and not making you purchase an add-on for the Kinect.

I don't think anyone said that did they? I specifically pointed it out because my Xbox 360 didn't come with one
Went through all that, spent so much money getting it caught up with the Pro to... play Perfect Dark Zero and Call of Duty 2? Yeah that was a mistake.
At least Geometry Wars was awesome.

Eh, I don't use a headset for any Xbox gaming. I have a wireless Turtle Beach but it interferes with the wireless connection on my 360 Slim. Took me months to figure that out since it wasn't consistent. Once I stopped using the Turtle Beach, it never had a problem connecting again. And I had been trying to keep the TB receiver as far away from the Slim as possible but it would still interfere occasionally.
I mentioned it earlier but that was one of my hang-ups about the "always connected even for single player games" because I would use my Slim for single player while I was trying to figure out what was going on with my connection. I'd hate for internet problems to keep me from doing ANYTHING with my brand-new system.

I did... I don't see it as an unreasonable request since it was included in some of the 360 console iterations. How much trouble would it have been for MS to include it in the XB1 package? Even if it might not be used by many, its a nice fallback or quick way to chat without needing Kinect, esp if headsets are hard to find around system launch. But apparently I've broken some console discussion rule. I'll bow out.

What Microsoft needed to do was follow Sony's lead and use Bluetooth for wireless headsets and not three variations of WiFi.
That is one of a few beefs I have with the console.

I don't know. I used their first-party Bluetooth wireless headset thing and it crapped out on me pretty quickly. I've never gotten one of their wireless headsets to work worth a damn. Always come crawling back to the stupid wired one.

Not that matters to some but the XO does not include a headset...
Xbox One does not include headset

Gamers who buy an Xbox One this holiday will not find the redesigned headset in the box, Microsoft has confirmed with Ars Technica. Players will have voice options from day-one, though, in the form of the system's built in Kinect unit.
"Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory," a Microsoft representative said.

Oh hell no... PS3 sucked in that regard for me, trying to talk to friends while playing games, only some could hear some, while others could hear others... what a cluster.
