Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?

Sony already said that they were going to be $60.

And it's another world. Right now in a single month you can 3-5 top notch games released. If the games are more expensive you'll only buy two, or even just one.

I hope they realize that.

As we heard, the PS4 architecture will make Devs happy and supposedly make games easier to do. If that's the case the aurgument of costs due to more people and hours to do a game should go out the window. I know it costs to make games but these games can have anywhere from 700K up to 5+ million in unit sales. That's a lot of $$$$$. Sucking an extra $10 on the front end is terrible especially when they do any season pass or DLC. Move up to that $70 mark seems ok to them but I wouldn't take gamers for granted. Without us they're nothing.
I think a lot of the cost is in creating the assets, like the textures, models, voice acting, motion capture, etc. rather than programming, isn't it? That should only go up as new systems can run more sophisticated games.

I doubt they raise the base price though. If need be, they'll just put less into the boxed game and sell more DLC.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?

Developing the engine is a large chunk of money, which is why so many people used Unreal Engine this last generation.

Otherwise yes you're right, a very large majority of the costs go into audio/visual assets and not the programming. However, having a platform that is easier to program for likely means better running games.

Let's face it... games are already $70+ when you consider the DLC we are not getting as part of the base package.

Which is why I hardly ever buy the DLC and usually wait for a big price drop anyway.

Back in the day Expansion Packs existed, they would be created after a game came out and was successful. Now it's built-in to the launch of titles which is simply fucking fucktarded.

Looks like a Logitech rendition of the PS3 pad, still don't get why the analog sticks are where they are.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?

Because that is the way PS controllers have been and some people like it that way...

Yep... there are weirdos out there that actually prefer the PS controller over the 360 controller.

Mr. Music beat me to it. Yeah I find the PS controller so uncomfortable to use now.

I don't like how bulbous the 360 controller is.

I may be wrong, but I honestly believe it was for visual symmetry. I also think the reason the D-pad was broken up was to approximately mirror the right side's 4 buttons. Even the way the Dual Shock 3's triggers are curved seems to be for visual appeal rather than usability.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?

I prefer the dualshock but I can understand why people who play a lot of action/FPS games like the 360 better.

So I wonder if with every video posted/shared, there is a 30 second Sony ad in front of it.

I would hope not. It probably has a PS4 watermark on it.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?

Do you think they will show the actual console until E3?

Or they will try to fuck Microsoft and show it a few days before the Xbox reveal?

Does "looks" really matter?

They should have shown it back in February instead of a 3 hour presser on the controller.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?

I saw this posted over at Blu-ray.com:

Quantic Dream's PS4 engine predates Beyond: Two Souls

When I asked Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière if its upcoming, untitled PlayStation 4 game would be based on Beyond: Two Souls' engine, I got a response I wasn't expecting. The developer began development on PS4 over two years ago -- among the first developers to have dev kits -- which influenced the technology that would go into building Beyond's engine.

In other words, Quantic Dream are working backwards, scaling next-gen tech down to PS3 which would explain how Beyond looks so damn good.

"By exploring the PlayStation 4, we got new ideas and worked very hard to implement them into Beyond’s engine," Fondaumière said. "Nevertheless, our PS4 title will run on a new engine."

Fondaumière didn't want to go further into detail on the PS4 project, but he did share some interesting details on how production will vastly change on next-gen projects. You can read more about that, here, tomorrow.

Isn't the CPU/GPU architecture of the PS4 completely different than the PS3? The bolded quote is really confusing me.

Yes, but its like developers starting with the 360 and porting to the PS3.
