re: Dark Souls II (3/11/2014 -- PS3, 360, PC)

Got a message through the PS3 that I was invited into the Dark Souls II beta last night at 2am, tried to redeem the code and it comes up already used. Anyone else have this happen?

Edited to add that apparently the code they sent wasn't unique. One code fits all, and since it was posted by some on various forums the spots filled up in moments. Piss poor way to run a closed beta.

So I'm guessing review will be out tomorrow? I'm curious If there'a an Easy mode? I loved the atmosphere but was too hard for me. I hope this one is more forgiving.

I'm counting down the hours until I can get my hands on this. Haven't watched a single trailer or anything because I want to go in blind. It's how I played the first game, and it was one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life.

There's no easy mode but word on the wire is that this one is much easier to get into than the last two. And that's important. The difficulty of these games is a bit of a misnomer because the difficulty curve simply starts high but it is very easy to level up your character to awesome status quickly. Once people start posting speed runs on Youtube you should have no problems copying parts of those and laying waste to demons spawn.

I never played Dark Souls, but when I finally got around to playing Demons Souls I found the difficulty I kept reading about beforehand was greatly exaggerated.

It was still a great game, but I think the difficulty is romanticized a little bit with these games.

Once you get the hang of Dark Souls, it isn't too bad. Also, if you take the right route through the game things will be easier. For instance, don't go to the catacombs first when arriving at Firelink Shrine.

It depends on how you play it. If you have a guide, it's pretty easy. If you rely on your own instincts (and cryptic clues left by others) to play through, it becomes much more difficulty.

Seems like if you liked the previous ones you'll dig this one. I'm excited to crack it open. But I heard there is some penalty for dying now where a certain amount of deaths equates to the lowering of your overall HP. Scary.

Yeah; it sounds similar to the system from Demon Souls but it's gradual rather than all at once. Rather than going hollow and having your HP drop, there are a few levels of being hollow and your HP drops slightly as you die more.

You can also reverse the penalty pretty easily.

I picked the game up at midnight and put in a few hours. It's great so far, obviously, but I did have some immediate disappointments (very minor non-story spoilers):
Spoiler:
- There's really only one very obvious route to take at the beginning of the game. One of my favorite things about the first game was the feeling of being a bit lost and not knowing if you're going the "right" way for your current abilities. It was wonderfully terrifying.
- Similarly, I'm not getting that same feeling of otherworldliness and hopeless melancholy that Dark Souls immediately plunged me into. This one feels more game-y in general.
- The graphics on these last-gen systems are really showing their age at this point. I'm all about gameplay over graphics, but there were at least a couple of times where I stopped and went "Ew, that is awful." On the other hand, there are some very beautiful, evocative areas.

Can't wait to really get into it later today, though!

I feared those things you just listed. Dark Souls 1 was just so special. I didn't think it would be possible to replicate or improve that experience for me. I am just so attached to the environments and the characters, mainly the bosses. Have you fought any bosses yet? are they just as cool? I get goosebumps thinking about my first experience against those guys in Dark Souls. How is the difficulty?

Also, It has to feel weird to play a Dark Souls game that doesn't include the magnificent Solaire

So theres no way to prevent being invaded besides disconnecting from the internet?

In the other games, you couldn't be invaded if you were hollow; only if you were "living". Other than that, just disconnecting.

It's better to just get over the fear of being invaded. It's a key part of the game (even more so this time around). Think of an invader as just another enemy to face. One death is the worst that can happen from an invasion, and you already die a lot in this game.

I actually haven't experienced it yet, but from reading the item descriptions it appears as though the situation is reversed this time. Being human prevents invasions. It will definitely have an effect on the dynamic.

I may have had it backwards. I spent probably 200+ hours between the first two games but it's been a long while since I started up either.

How do I level up? I been to few bonfires so far and can't find the option to level up my sorcerer.
