Star Citizen brings the visceral action of piloting interstellar craft through combat and exploration to a new generation of gamers at a level of fidelity never before seen. At its core Star Citizen is a destination, not a one-off story. It's a complete universe where any number of adventures can take place, allowing players to decide their own game experience. Pick up jobs as a smuggler, pirate, merchant, bounty hunter, or enlist as a pilot, protecting the borders from outside threats. Chris Roberts has always wanted to create one cohesive universe that encompasses everything that made Wing Commander and Privateer / Freelancer special. A huge sandbox with a complex and deep lore allowing players to explore or play in whatever capacity they wish. That*universe*is Star Citizen.

From the main Kickstarter thread, here's an article critical of this funding effort (written when it was just being funded on the website only):

To be clear, it was Penny Arcade Report, not the comic or its creators. And the author was enthusiastic about the game itself, just skeptical about its chances.
For example, the $500K Kickstarter goal is only a fraction of the $2 million overall crowdfunding goal. Moreover, the $2 million crowdfunding goal is only a fraction of the $12-$14 million budget for the game. The rest is coming from venture capitalists. Chris Roberts makes it sound like the extra $10-$12 million of venture capital is essentially a "lock" as long as the crowdfunding goal is reached, but that remains to be seen.
Here's an interview with Chris Roberts about some features of the game:

Is it weird that I wish the game wasn't so ambitious? I'd love to play a simple single player space sim along the lines of the original Wing Commander games with a fun story line over the massive multiplayer universe that's being pitched

You could always get your fix with the Wing Commander Saga. http://www.wcsaga.com/
I plan on playing that once I buy a joystick.

Hopefully, they would cancel the Kickstarter before it ended if it looks like they won't reach their overall goal.

Re: Star Citizen: a Space Sim on kickstarter by Chris Roberts
It depends on the game.
Star Citizen has an estimated Nov 2014 delivery date.
Double Fine Adventure is due out in May 2013.
Wasteland 2 is aiming for an Oct 2013 delivery.
Project Eternity is looking at Apr 2014.
Planetary Annihilation is estimating Jul 2013.
Leisure Suit Larry Remake will be out early 2013.
Two Guys Spaceventure is working towards a Feb 2013 release.
Shadowrun Returns estimated Jan 2013, while Shadowrun Online predicts May 2013.
Most of the time, the developers set the estimated delivery date of the rewards as the estimate release date of the game (since so many of the rewards include the game). However, that can change; Leisure Suit Larry put an estimated delivery date of Oct 2012, but the extra funding and stretch goals meant that development would have to be extended into early 2013.

Pledged. Game looks incredible. It's exactly the type of game I've been waiting to see again. With today's graphics capabilities, it will be amazing. Even the super rough demo videos he has posted are incredible.

So this is definitely a massive multiplayer game? My interest level just dropped to almost nothing. I just want to play Freelancer 2.

I can't imagine this being a full fledged MMO considering the budget is way too low for that to happen. What it sounds like from the video is the Universe can eventually be expanded upon. If the game does well enough they can have episodic content. Like a Mass Effect television series.

Yeah I scanned the description and didn't really see anything about it being a true MMO. I saw something about being able to play online or offline so I guess I took that to mean it would be like Diablo 3. Like you can play 100% of the time by yourself or hook up with friends to play the storyline but it wouldn't be like World of Warcraft or anything like that. If that's the case, I'd be all over this. When fumanstan mentioned MMO I just lost interest.
An updated and better Freelancer 2 would be amazing.

I'd rather wait and spend $50 in 2014 if this game turns out good than give them $30 now and hope the game actually gets made.
Speaking of which, what sort of guarantee do you have from Kickstarter to ensure that your game actually gets released? Do we just assume if their goal is funded, that the game will indeed get seen to completion.

Sorry, didn't mean to allude to it being a full MMO. Was speaking more akin to the gameplay and universe being pitched, bad choice of words.

I'm worried it's too ambitious too. I'd just like to play a GOOD space sim/combat/trading game with an immersive universe.
