Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

Everyone should consider backing Jane Jensen's Moebius and Pinkerton Road Studio. Jane Jensen is the creator of the legendary Gabriel Knight pc adventure games.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...-2012-2013-csg

With about 2.5 days left the campaign is trying to hit $400k (likely) and $450k (possible but unlikely) stretch goals to add more content to the game.

The developers of the 2001 RTS Conquest: Frontier Wars, have started a Kickstarter for the sequel: Conquest 2 Vyrium Uprising

This article talks about 3 "hardcore" RPGs currently on Kickstarter: Echoes of Eternia, Hiro Fodder, and Kenshi:

The Escapist has an article of advice to developers on how to make a successful Kickstarter campaign:

Echoes of Eternity, wasn't that the one that 4chan said was made using RPG maker?

It's Echoes of Eternia, although the article I linked to got the name wrong too. I've corrected my post.

And yes, it was the one that got a 4chan-style critique of it (I don't know for certain that the critique originated on 4chan). Although it was the project creator that said he's using RPG Maker, the critique just pointed it out as a negative.

I'm definitely starting to be much more selective over my KS projects. Like that steampunk one, normally I would be all over it, but when I back a project, I back it based on how likely the project is going is going to be good. I don't have much faith that a game from a CGI artist is going to do well, because yes, visuals might be great, but the everything else? I am going to look at what the other aspects of the KS look like

I'm conflicted on this one. On one hand, he's only asked for $10,000 (and he got almost 50k). But on the other hand, he's using a game engine. Not that there is anything wrong with it and he admits it openly. But yeah, one of the rewards is put your voice in the game, but he wants $200 for the opportunity. Shoot, I got a good voice...I'd do it for free to help him out, the same with writing a side quest or two. But paying for it seems kinda wrong. There is flack for sure against him, but the amount is a bit much.

Many of the Kickstarters are using a third-party game engine of some time. Double Fine is using the Moai plaftorm, and Wasteland 2 is being developed on Unity. RPG Maker is a lot more limited, but considering he's making an RPG on a low budget, it's probably a good fit.

Here's another Kickstarter using RPG Maker: Unemployment Quest
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...a-non-epic-rpg

RPG Maker has been used on games sold commercially, the most notable possibly being To the Moon:

A lot of the Kickstarter game projects have had some form of reward that "puts you in the game" so to speak, either as a character name or a random character portrait, etc.

If he had asked for people to voice act or create content without charging a fee, then he would've gotten flooded with offers. Then he'd have to sort through them all and figure out which offers were legitimate and serious, and would be carried through. Making it a reward for backing the project at a high enough amount means that he only has to deal with those serious about contributing.

You could also consider that he might've figured that any $250+ donation means that he can add to the game on top of what he was originally planning. So it's not necessarily doing the work on the base game for him (with the original planned number of side-quests), but adding an additional side-quest specifically fan designed.

A big problem is that these rewards directly affect the quality of the content in the game. A backer could create a poor character design, or at least cause inconsistent character designs. Or write a poorly written quest or character dialogue. These could be mitigated by the developer editing the content, but if a backer delivers awful voice acting, there's little to nothing that can be done. And the entire game, when released, is going to be judged based in part on this additional content.

Just in time too, as the kickstarter ends in 13 hours. Jane Jensen's kickstarter ends in under 24 hours.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...-radio-network
All Games Radio Network
45k needed Currently at $3600 with 30 days left.
A podcasting network that also broadcasts most of their shows live. It's been around for 15 years and now they're doing a big push to go major league. On the list is adding more shows, larger online presence and adding video production to the mix. There's not a lot of big independent video game news outlets and AGR is looking to change that.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

I went in on Grim Dawn, Xenonauts, and big time on Tex Murphy, in addition to my other backing on the SpaceVenture, Jane Jensen's, and Republique. It would appear I have a Kickstarter addiction.

Fixed. They may have made their project length too long. According to their kicktraqer, the project's been live for 11 days already, meaning that they originally launched with 44 days:
http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/all...radio-network/

Kickstarter itself did a study that showed that most successful projects were under 30 days.

Also, their reward system is confusing. Just looking at the rewards on their KS page gives the impression that you get only that single reward for you pledge level, not any of the previous rewards. They clarified it a bit in an update:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...k/posts/226686
Many people have asked if the higher tiers include the lower tier rewards also. The answer is yes and no. The Non-Physical rewards, like access to the Super Show, the Forum Icon, and digital downloads, are included. The physical items, like posters, and tshirts, are not.
So there's no way to get both a T-Shirt and a poster. This is in contrast to most other kickstarters, where the rewards are cumulative.

I think the wasteland/shadowrun KS threads that we started were both on the first page as well lol.

edit: I just posted a Space Command KS in the movie talk forums, and google search overall it is #1 on 2nd page, but Google discussion it is #4 on the 1st page

lol Posted that a couple of hours ago.

I'm thinking about Grim Dawn. Anyone want to split one of the co-op tiers with me? 5 hours to go.

Just over 13 hours to go and we've hit $400k.

Now just $50k more to add 1000 lines of dialogue to Moebius as well as a main theme recorded with a live orchestra.

We need a nice surge of backers!

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

Good news is that Jane Jensen's Moebius finished with $440k total ($435 kickstarter, $5k paypal).

Better news is that you can still donate directly at her website and have access to all the kickstarter reward tiers through May 25!

http://pinkertonroad.com/join-csg/

Just $10k more for 1000 lines of extra dialogue and music recorded with live orchestra.

Re: Ultimate Kickstarter Video Games Thread

Kickstarter really needs a funding graph. It would be really interesting to see when it plateaus and how adding tiers creates spikes. Seems pretty simple too since you have a definite start date, end date, and the dates/times of all the individual pledges and when they're modified.

Just throw a new tab on there, someone.

They do have funding graphs, they just aren't available to us. Sometimes the person running the project will post them though.
