Yep. Easily in my Top 10 this generation. I think I put this game as top game in the mid year poll.
GTA V will probably take the top spot for the year but this should be one of the best second places ever. Agee with all your positives. My main con is the AI was laughable in some parts that it would take you off the game. |

My main con is the AI was laughable in some parts that it would take you off the game. But none of that really detracts from the strengths of the game. I didn't even get into one of them, because I didn't know how to do it without spoilers. Spoiler:
Winter was my favorite part. Every bit of writing was perfection, from the solo hunt, to the David intro, to the reveal to the non-rescue. Hopefully that's vague enough. |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
You are a monster. You just had to kill one doctor, not all three. What the hell is wrong with you!
;) But I do agree, this is easily my game of the year as well. I'm not saying the game didn't have it's hiccups along the way, but the story just blew everything away that I've played this year. |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
Even though Joel does what he does at the end for selfish reasons, is it really that bad?

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
I think people are really reading way too much into Joel's motivations. It's an interesting interpretation but I sincerely doubt what Naughty Dog intended.
As for the doctors. it never occurred to me that you could kill all three. I only killed the one threatening me. So I guess I didn't accept my role as villain. ;) |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
I might be a monster for killing all 3, but
Spoiler:
And if I'm a monster, it's for renting this game for $2 from Redbox rather than buying it. :( It's tough to say what ND had in mind for interpretation, but I have to at least give them credit for keeping the characters consistent. And looking back for hints on Joel: Spoiler:

The game also prompted me to listen to "The Road" on audiobook today and then watch the movie on Netflix tonight. I highly recommend the former, but not the latter. Movies are almost always weaker than the books they are based on, but this one was especially off IMO. |

And I made the mistake of buying The Road after playing this game. An incredibly dull movie and I couldn't stand the kid. |

Totally agree about Winter.

He was written pretty poorly in the screenplay. I'm honestly not sure how you'd make a good movie out of that book, but it would make an interesting single-season TV series that nobody would watch. I do recommend the book or audiobook. |

I'm not usually an an advocate for separate "spoiler threads" for games like we do with movies, but if any game ever deserved one, this is the one. Here's Video discussion from Game Informer that gets into some of the same ambivalence that I had [spoilers, obviously]: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/WrVzCKR4LC8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
I didn't get the impression that the doctors had figured it out... the audio logs sounded as if they really thought they had the cure but they'd tried on dozens (if not hundreds of others) and failed. Ellie would have died for nothing - IMO. Joel was playing the father card - and no father is going to let his daughter become a science experiment -- not to save 1 or 1,000,000 lives.

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
You guys won me over, or maybe I was already won over, because I killed all of those fuckers...even the huddled unarmed ones.
I just had some misgivings about it, which was surely what ND had in mind. |
Re: PS4: Now With The Faint But Distinct Odor of Urine (11/15)
Does the Last of Us just start out really slow... rented it and played it a little bit, but just can't get into it.

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
no...
Maybe I am just expecting an experience like Beyond Two Souls... |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
No, it's nothing like that. It sounds like you're playing the prologue where they teach you to run and look around. You don't even have a weapon yet...or at least not one you can use.
In terms of gameplay, think Uncharted meets Arkham Asylum in a Fallout 3 setting. In terms of storytelling, I have nothing to compare it to, completely unmatched. |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
In a while, you'll understand why if that had been a joke, it would have been funny. You're not even through the first tutorial. :)
|
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
No, I'm further than that, have the weapons, and stuff...
Basically just after all the tutorials where you bring the girl back to your place.... But yeah... maybe that is why. I'll rent it again this weekend when I have more time and not so tired. :) |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
I thought the game was a bit slow too, as did a few others in this thread when the game was released. The story was fantastic, but plenty of complaints about the gameplay and action/stealth, which has never been Naughty Dog's strong suit in the Uncharted games anyway.
|
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
I played through end to end last weekend, and I think I remember taking Ellie back to a place and falling asleep. I don't think I even realized that was my place...thought it was a safehouse or something. Anyway, yeah, you are very very early...just after the basic tutorial.
It's not a super fast paced action shooter like Gears or even Uncharted. It's more deliberate like Arkham Asylum in terms of pace, and I find the stealth very similar as well. Edit: You also spend some time scavenging and crafting, which slows things down, but I enjoy some light inventory management. |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
Slow? Never play Fallout (my favorite series, I played Fallout 3 for close to 200 hours!!!).
But, although I have mentioned several times how I love this game, I agree with some of the complains here. But it's also all about the setting, the chemistry you have with the game. I love end of the world/post apocalyptic settings, in movies, books, videogames. So this is my kind of thing. The prologue is so brutal, as a father (there we go again!) I needed some time to process that part. The game is an emotional experience, (that's the word what I was looking for!), so if you are not engaged big way, you will notice all the cons and not like the game that much. |
re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)
beat it last night. I played on Hard, and I'm not usually a stealth gamer -- I ran & gunned Dishonored. There were some frustrating parts, but the hardest parts, I was able to run & skip without clearing rooms. I really enjoyed it, the setting, the plot, the actors. Sure it was redundant at times, killing enemies, but really unless they added platforming or puzzles, what else can they do? Its a combat based game.

The Last of Us: Left Behind is Naughty Dog's first ever single-player DLC. Bruce, Neil, and the rest of the team are getting close to wrapping work on this new campaign, which will meet the quality and gameplay that you've come to expect with The Last of Us, along with a few surprises. She's back! Ashley Johnson reprises her role as Ellie in The Last of Us: Left Behind single-player DLC. Left Behind takes place while Ellie is attending a military boarding school in the Boston quarantine zone, prior to meeting Joel and the events in the main campaign of The Last of Us. In just a few short months since the release of The Last of Us, you have made it clear that Ellie has become one of your favorite characters in games. Today, we're excited to confirm that you play as Ellie throughout the entirety of Left Behind. Joining Ellie on this new adventure is Riley, her best friend and also a mentor of sorts at the military boarding school. Just as The Last of Us focused on the bond between Ellie and Joel, Left Behind explores the bond between Ellie and Riley through a series of events that will forever change both of their lives. Bringing Riley to life through our performance capture process is the talented Yaani King, who we had the pleasure of working with on the DLC. If you just can't wait until the DLC drops to get more of The Last of Us, go out immediately and read the Dark Horse comic series, The Last of Us: American Dreams - which is conveniently available in the recently released paperback collection. I cannot recommend this series enough and it's even more relevant now, as in the comic you will learn more about how Ellie and Riley first became friends, giving you even more insight into Ellie's story in The Last of Us universe. And it's also just plain great! The Last of Us: Left Behind will be releasing in early 2014 - we will announce a specific date as soon as we iron out all the details. The awesome news is that Left Behind is included in the The Last of Us Season Pass, which also includes a ton of multiplayer DLC, and is the best deal you can get for all the DLC content we've planned to release - over 75% worth of savings compared to buying all the DLC separately. If you're only interested in the single-player DLC, you can pre-order it starting November 19 on the PlayStation Store for $14.99. We've also got the polaroid image for The Last of Us: Left Behind in convenient wallpaper sizes. Get them now! |
