Spoiler:
Tommy doesn't go into the house. For some reason he needs to be in the house for cinematic sequence to be triggered.

I finished this today. It was pretty fantastic. And the ending:

Spoiler:
I didn't think e was goingto save her. I though he old bring her to the fireflies knowing they wold kill her. I'm surprised the last fight wasn't against infected.
.

Their relationship felt very real throughout.

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

Finally got a chance to finish this yesterday since I got held up moving and changing jobs.

Decent game, and it got better towards the end as the weight of the story finally took shape and Joel and Ellie's story got stronger, but overall I was a bit let down by the gameplay and often annoyed with the action sequences. I didn't have much trouble with the stealth, but the gunplay just wasn't particularly interesting to me and got tedious. Kind of wish I waited for this to get cheaper to play it, since it feels like just a one and done game for me, with zero interest to do the New Game Plus mode.

As for the end, I was a bit surprised at how it turned out.
Spoiler:
The recordings made me think Joel would lean towards the "greater good", and the lie to Ellie at the end felt a little off to me. I'm sure she knows the truth, but it just felt off to me.

Funny, for me the
Spoiler:
recordings convinced me that the Firefly's didn't know their ass from their elbow and were as useless/untrustworthy as the military they opposed. I felt Joel made the right call from a logical standpoint.

I like how the ending creates different reactions and interpretations from people. :)

About the ending:

Spoiler:

That's actually what happens. Or at least like most people "read" the ending. He lied, she knows that he's lying. I would add that he knows that she knows that he's lying.

Yeah, and the article that Fandango listed has a couple other ideas that they were considering for the ending. I'm really glad that they chose this ending because it seemed like it fit the best for the way everything played out.

Spoiler Alert for alternate ending.

That's how I saw it as well. But I've also seen a lot of people with the rather wild (to me) notion that
Spoiler:
the ending reveals that Joel was the villain all along and how he's a sociopath that is dooming mankind and ruining Ellie's life. But then such theories ignore that Ellie was pretty violent kid who prior to meeting Joel clearly already had a "stab first, ask questions later" MO. And she seemed more concerned for Joel than her importance as a cure. The two key examples being when she doesn't leave with Sam and Henry when they abandon Joel and when she runs away from Tommy's because she felt that Joel only wanted to abandon her. She chose Joel over the potential cure just as much as he chose Ellie.

That's a joke, right? Because they'd have to redo a key scene to make that work.

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

Wrapped this up yesterday. I absolutely loved the story, writing, characters. etc. and the game did a fantastic job and creating a world. My only gripe would be the occasional areas where you pretty much have to die several times to learn how to deal with enemies. I guess you could argue the only way to solve it would be to make the game to easy, but with a story so well done, it'd pull me out of it to hit a section where I pretty much knew I was going to die a couple times to figure out how to progress.

Anyone else feel like they were playing an alternate take on Telltale's The Walking Dead? Spoiled for those who haven't played that:

Spoiler:

- Adult man protecting a young girl and teaching her how to protect herself
- Post apocalyptic zombie tale with a heavy emphasis on story
- Man has to rescue girl when she's kidnapped by other survivors
- Encountering survivors who've turned to cannibalism
- A bad guy motivated by the fact that you screwed him over (taking his food/letting people take his food in TWD, killing his scouts in TLOU)

It didn't bother me at all and they were probably just hitting the same genre cliches, but there were a couple times it really jumped out at me.

I ordered a PS3 yesterday purely because I want this game so much. I've always been anti-Sony, but The Last of Us looks so fecking amazing. Have skipped all of this thread to avoid spoilers or over-exciting myself, but argh, I want to play it so badly!!

Congrats. I can safely say, without any exaggeration, that this game is one of the best games I have ever played.

Looks like there are three DLC packs planned. The first and third are multiplayer maps (yawn), but the second one is single player.

Rented this today and am 9 hours in. It's an absurdly good game.

I was worried that I wouldn't like the stealth, but it's not bad at all, and it's not the kind of stealth where you can't fight your way out of it if you get spotted. If anything, the stealth feels empowering, which games hardly ever get right.

And the story is as good as any game I've ever played. I don't know how Naughty Dog does it.

Loved this game. I played stealth style as much as possible. I only killed enemies the game forced me to kill.

re: The Last of Us (PS3 and PS4)

I just finished the game, and I could go on forever about how amazing it is.

Highlights:
  • I'm man enough to admit I teared up at the opening scene
  • So much storytelling done in-game (borrowed from Half-Life)
  • Empowering stealth reminded me of Arkham Asylum
  • Adding scavenging elements to a linear game made it feel more open
  • The hunting scene was a masterful piece of storytelling for all the things it didn't say
  • The kind of character development you usually only see in serial TV
  • Presentation. I don't think anybody would have batted an eye if this had been on PS4.
  • Every act had guest characters, and they were all interesting.
  • Voice acting and facial animations...wow.

I'll stick with Mario Galaxy as my favorite game of this generation, but this one might be the best game of the generation. I know some people liked Tomb Raider better, and it was a fun game, but I don't think it's in the same league as The Last of Us. TLoU really mixed all of my favorite parts of Bioshock, Uncharted, Fallout, Arkham and Half-Life and wrapped them up in the best storytelling I've seen in a game to date.

Stunned.
