Alan Wake's American Nightmare is an extremely impressive experiment, created with the aim of releasing an essentially fully-fledged retail game through Xbox LIVE Arcade. American Nightmare absolutely succeeds in this regard, with action-packed gameplay, a cool theme, and an exciting Arcade Action mode. However, as a follow-up to the awesome original game, the story comes up short and the whole experience lacks suspense and thrills.
IGN Ratings for Alan Wake's American Nightmare (X360).
8.0
Presentation
The cheesy pulp feel of the story adds an interesting element, but the plot feels muddled and hard to follow.
8.5
Graphics
The game looks as good as the first game, and very impressive for an Xbox LIVE Arcade game. There are a few small bugs here and there, but overall it's a fine looking game.
8.5
Sound
The game's sound effects and ambient noise do an excellent job of setting the stage and helping create some atmosphere, but the written dialogue is a little ham-fisted.
7.5
Gameplay
The game's heavy on the action elements, and the controls handle themselves admirably and make for a fun action experience. The story mode is a bit too repetitious, unfortunately.
8.0
Lasting Appeal
The story mode will take you about 4 to 5 hours, depending on if you hunt down all of the manuscript pages, while Arcade Action will keep you busy for a bit.

Fifteen bucks for a game that has the length of COD is a bargain. I really liked the original and bought all the DLC. Looking forward to this and I will be getting it on day one.

I couldn't remember the order of the Block Party releases, so I hadn't realized that this is out this week. More Alan Wake is a great thing in my book - day one purchase for me!

Re: Alan Wake: American Nightmare
Kotaku gives it a YES.
What I played: Completed Story Mode in about 8 hours; spent about 12 hours playing Fight Til Dawn mode across various maps.
Two Things I Loved
- Mr. Scratch's smarmy screeds prove to be oddly hypnotic, even when the actor portraying him is clearly chewing scenery.
- Alan Wake actually feels like he's grown as a person. The prickly, whiny writer of 2010's offers some compassion to those he meets and walks around palpable regret.
Two Things I Hated
- American Nightmare's Story Mode offers a novella-sized experience which you can blow through in a night. If you liked the heft of the first game, you'll feel slighted here.
- Unlocking new maps based on performance got to feeling tedious.

Re: Alan Wake: American Nightmare
Played through the first section and got about 25% of the manuscript pages in about an hour. Seems like it'll be a very short game, 5 hours tops.
Been having fun with it, controls are a little loose for my taste, so I actually had to take the sensitivity down a few notches. Some cool new weapons and ammo seems to be of no concern, though that may change in the later portions of the game. Nail gun and SMG are neat, but I couldn't quite open the Magnum box I found
Everyone hoping that Barry will be in this game can rest easy as he's literally the first person the story mode shows
Also, Alan has clearly been working on his cardio (at least in a non-fighting situation) as you can run for about a quarter mile before getting winded now.

Yeah, its supposed to be a 5-6 hour game.
I thought the conrols were a little loose too - need to tweak. And F-That magnum box. I almost can open it now, might backtrack to get it.
And yeah, his cardio is much improved.

I forgot to mention this last night, but I really don't care for the flashlight not working in an idle state - meaning, you have to focus it to affect the Taken at all. I'm 99% sure it wasn't like that in the original game. But I do like how the beam does a better job of fading out with the battery charge now. That's pretty cool.
I only played through the second area tonight and, judging from my manuscript checklist, it looks like I'm closer to 33% done instead of 67% like I thought. It's looking like you go back through the areas a second time. Hopefully it gets harder because it's been a cakewalk so far with no real threat and near-infinite ammo.

Re: Alan Wake: American Nightmare
One of the Destructoid reviewers mentioned that you actually go through each area 3 times. Not sure how accurate that is, but her major complaint was the repetitiveness in both the arcade and the story modes.

God I love the full-motion video in this game. Both the psychotic tv videos with Mr. S%*#!ch and the cutscenes. They take me back to the promise of what CD-ROMs were supposed to bring us. That and they're just really well done. I really believe that dude is the character I'm playing and not just a stop-motion capture actor. I mean, it's not quite Serkis as Gollum and Smeagol, but it's good.
Also the minor
-esque twist there was a nice surprise. I'm definitely interested to see where it goes now.

The guy that does the voice of the radio interviewer, Larry Kenney, is the father of Kerri Kenney (from The State, Reno 911!, and everything else). Also he was the voice of Lion-O in the original Thundercats cartoon.

Take a look at the canned prototype footage for Alan Wake 2 below, with annotations from Polygon and Remedy. It makes for very interesting viewing, with certain elements from the demo making it into XBLA follow-up American Nightmare.
