when you hear things like this game is the love child of Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3...how can you not get excited? Dead Rising and its stupid clunky coop can go to hell........

They are so cool, in fact, that unlike lame-Os such as Katie Perry, Elivs, The Beastie Boys, Wham!, The Jackson 5 and the Rolling Stones, Kris Kross refused to allow their classic recording to be sullied by the Just Dance 2 video game; forcing Ubisoft to make do with using studio musicians to rap "Kris Kross will make you Jump! Jump!' while a silhouette dances and jumps around in backwards jeans.

Thought I would bump this since the game is out in 5 days (9/6/2011)
A friend of mine worked on this, so I'm really excited. Will probably pick it up for Xbox 360.
Anyone get to play at PAX? Impressions?

I have no idea how the "pre-orders" are going but someone over in the Amazon forums said the "Limited " version thru Gamestop is out(?)
But there are plenty who are holding back still including me waiting to see if some 11th hr "bonus" will pop up. So far only the Art Book is being offered and nothing else...not Amazon, B.B, or Walmart has anything else. I've got two friends who say they're getting it and we do allot of co-op together. But the lack of any real pre-order bonus compared to Gears 3, Rage, Batman:AC, Battlefield 3 and even COD:MW3 is leaving many asking why?

The 3 other friends I play most of my games with are all in the same boat....if no last minute bonus comes up we all skip buying this ...no early reviews (outside OPM in Italy) and the last game that came out of this company was Call of Juarez Cartel. If amazon had a gift card or something we all would still probably bite...but as it stands now, we all plan on redboxing it when it comes out to see for ourselves. Burnt to many times to pay full price...

Re: Dead Island
quotes like that get me excited...but then I remember their Bodycount preview quote "one of the most satisfying shooters I've ever played" and their final score of 6 out of 10...

I might see if this pops up on Red Box to try out for just a few dollars. It looks promising, but with the onslaught of games coming I'm not sure it makes sense.

I'm in the same boat. This seems like it might be a good candidate for a title to use in TRU and Kmart's upcoming "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" fall promotions. I need to have some titles I've yet to buy but still want so I don't end up wasting that deal on some $60 game that I have little interest in and will never actually play (i.e. Madden).

Re: Dead Island
I'd jump on the Kart deal if it weren't for the $20 credit I have with Amazon. And plus I really don't put Kmart as my number one choice for buying games. But it's a slap in the face of Amazon to Walmart to Target that if Kmart can do it then so can they.
At the same time of wanting this game no-one is forcing me to either. And for a game that's so close to release date there really hasn't been a whole lot out there. compare that to "Rage" where it's been footage (in game at that) coming out left & right. And it's still a month away. If nothing comes up by this weekend in both bonus and more news I'm starting to smell another "Homefront"....

OPM Italy review, translated by LimblessQuasar from the Gamespot forums:
"Zombie products have always had a rather large fanbase, but the guys at Techland have decided to propose a rather original survival horror formula. The hype generated by just the one trailer released, able to grab the Golden Lion at Cannes (in the category dedicated to commercials and trailers) was very impressive and left us with high expectations for this new franchise. And now were here to tell you all about our impressions of the game. Just put the Blu-Ray in our consoles and the beautiful credits and logo appear. The writing, much criticized for its crudeness, shows a downright disturbing picture, clearly distinguishing a person hanging in a palm tree, in perfect horror movie fashion. (I'm curious if he's talking about the case or the background or what. I mean, "La scritta" means "The writing" lol it just doesn't fit with the sentence.)
Still determined to choose this place for your holiday? Press the start button and our journey begins on this much coveted island, the Royal Palm Resort. A pearl of beauty, with a classic bean-shaped swimming pool, palm trees and deck chairs on a white beach, the blue sea contrasting with the details perfectly. Our four heroes believe this place could be the real Heaven. But actually, they will be rather surprised when they are greeted not by beautiful women wearing Hawaiian necklaces, but a multitude of zombies! Starting from this odd premise, the team was able to pack great graphics and gameplay into a game quite enjoyable, but not without problems. The graphics engine (The "Chrome Engine") giving the concept of Ban an exciting and expressive atmosphere, leaving little untapped potential.
The beautiful imaginary island, probably somewhere in Papua New Guinea, not only turns out to be an innovative concept, unexplored by so many other survival horror games, is truly a rare beauty, made with specific care, and is a candidate as the true star of the game, almost making the player turn a blind eye to some of the poor textures indoors. To meet the public now, and all the more pretentious, Dead Island also uses an advanced physics again, completing the gaming experience and adding to its addictive nature. Any physical action will guarantee variety: cutting a head off never looks quite the same, as the engine immediately calculates damages to each part of the object hit. (Sentenced removed because I don't understand it, it was discussing the physics engine though). Although the work is overall quality, there are occasional mishaps within the system.
The interiors are, unfortunately, much less detailed than the outside, creating an unpleasant feeling of separation within the game. The animations in the water are generally poor, usually lacking a response to action taken in it, this is a rather huge oversight for a game set on an island with so many swimming pools. (More discussion about graphics that gets a little twisted, discussing how interiors are poor and how the water "jars" improperly while moving around). There are, however, many realistic pieces to be found both outside and in, demonstrating the tremendous potential the engine possesses. Unfortunately, they also manage to highlight the flaws."
"Structured like an FPS, Dead Island might at first seem like yet another zombie kill 'em all game. In fact, under the bark of this FPS/RPG, lies a heart that skips a few beats along the way. You begin by choosing one of four very different characters, whose strengths and weaknesses are readily apparent. Taking one moment to discuss the plot...The plot is good, and the proposal is sound, the problem being that the story develops mostly independent of the player, usually involving non-interactive sequences, highly divorced from your personal actions. This reduces player involvement and interest. But off the plot! The RPG elements stick to a formula perfected in previous games, and instead focuses on a highly satisfactory combination of combat and strategy. Please note, speaking of the fighting, our enemies are not cannon fodder, instead varying from slow walker, to fast sprinter, or a slow, meaty boss-level, sometimes even zombies charging you while on fire.
(This whole paragraph I changed up a bit. I didn't change any of what was said, but any good Italian speaker could tell it's been changed around. Soz -_-)
The game presents a rich variety of enemies, but also of weapons. The strategic elements of the game come mostly in how you customize your weapon. Components can be found around the island, and we may upgrade our weapons to be more powerful, sometimes fiery, sometimes electric, equipping nails to our baseball bats or, why not an oar instead? (That sounds awesome!) Another strategic element comes into play with how one must repair their weapon. The combat system, while fun, is a bit repetitive in the long run. This is at least partly because the classes of enemies are not numerous enough to give consistent surprises. This is another sad element of many RPGs. Freedom also comes into play, as every time the player speaks with a mission-character, they will give the option to either accept or decline the mission. There is certainly no need to accept all the missions there are, because our character can accumulate enough experience on his own and through only some missions, leveling up and learning new skills to move up the classic tree. (There's a long sentence here I didn't really understand, about how the FPS elements take time to get used to.)
Needless to say, a title like Dead Island is very attractive with its multiplayer options, and will be a treat for many, looking to escape the lonely monotony of close combat. There has clearly been much care put into this games co-op mode, and it is yet another feature that cuts it away from the masses of zombie games already out., which are too often reduced to "run through and kill everything as fast as possible." Perhaps the most notable piece of Dead Island's multiplayer mode is its great management model, the drop-in, drop-out system. Our friends - who own a PS3 and are connected to the PSN - can leave their local game whenever they want and join us in our game, without slowing anyone down or altering the plot. Definitely a great job to Techland with their mutliplayer choice, albeit with one sad lack. While we find the drop-in, drop-out mode genius, we were astonished that this could be handled so well online but lacked any option for classic split-screen play that could've produced some immense results."

I'm really curious to see if the amazing trailer comes back to bite them in the ass -- if review sites hold it against the game that the trailer seemed to promise a deep, emotional experience the actual game seems unlikely to deliver. That was my concern back in February and I bet it still holds at launch.

Anyone that would hold that against the game in comparison to how the game actually plays is an idiot.
