^ I actually had more fun playingg the Alpha than I have playing the Beta.

Re: Battlefield 3
I played 64 player Caspien Border a lot this weekend. I think people who were initially concerned with the Metro beta should know that this map feels a lot more like BC2. Large, open environments - large enough that it never feels crowded and also never empty (but seriously, the map is HUGE). It is also immensely detailed. I was amazed at the level of visual fidelity in this map.
What I also really like about it is the variety of the five conquest bases. Each one has a completely different feel and requires a different attack approach. There is an open, dense forest surrounded by canyon walls; a hilltop bunker with some basic structures, forest cover, and rocks to perch on; a border checkpoint with lots of structures and cover like cement dividers, burned out cars, etc.,. It's a lot of fun jumping from place to place and mixing up your approach. The vehicles are all pretty cool, but don't feel too much different than their BC2 counterparts. There is a new buggy in place of the four wheeler which is fast and fun to drive. The vehicle physics are improved. The cars now drift when turning at high speeds and have a much more defined suspension. There is one area of the map right outside the main spawn where you can hit a bump and send your jeep flying over a hillside. When you land after a jump like this is feels violent - pretty cool effect compared to BC2, where the vehicles felt like they were on air. Overall I was very impressed with everything about the map and can't wait for the final game to come out. |
Re: Battlefield 3
Is the Beta over? Cos the site doesn't load.

Re: Battlefield 3
A really good article on Joystiq:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/10/th...d-3/#continued Releasing a beta for Battlefield 3 might be the biggest mistake EA has made with its biggest game this year. As it stands now, Battlefield 3's beta is a wellspring of misinformation about what your final Battlefield 3 experience will be. I'm glad for that – I enjoyed what I've played of this more-final build of Battlefield 3 much more than any time I've spent with the game throughout the year. |
Re: Battlefield 3
Does Online Pass equate to EA Account? Or is it simply a code to gain access to their servers?

That's both hideous and badass. But I can't decide which descriptor I'm leaning towards more.

Re: Battlefield 3
impressive. I can't wait.

Re: Battlefield 3
That video has restored my faith in the MP. I always planned on a day 1 purchase, but the beta had me second guessing for a minute.

Re: Battlefield 3
So this thing's out in less than 5 days and no reviews?
|
Re: Battlefield 3
I would be surprised if we don't see some reviews this weekend.
|
Re: Battlefield 3
I'm sure there is a clause that reviews can't come out till release.

One week before release. The relentless marketing machine rolls on, with EA pushing out teaser after teaser for Battlefield 3′s single player without really letting anyone loose on it for an extended period of time. With one week to go, you’d assume there’d be reviews, right? Well, no – because there isn’t any review code yet, or at least that’s what we’re hearing. http://www.thesixthaxis.com/wp-conte...07/bf3drop.jpg This man is guarding the review disks. WITH A GUN. Normally there’s a pecking order for early code – the print magazines tend to get nearly finished disks a month or so early so they can meet deadlines and print runs, and then the major sites get first dibs on anything left over. Sites like TSA will get debug (but finished) code if it’s there (our Uncharted 3 review has been done for nearly a week now, for example) but that’s not always the case, with us sometimes working with normal retail promos and sometimes we buy the games after release. We’ve been pinging EA for answer on when Battlefield 3 code might be coming, but as of yet without response. Gamespot, though, being a ‘big’ site after all, appear to have more info. “Yesterday we received an email asking us to confirm our mailing address because review copies of Battlefield 3 are coming soon,” said a blog on the site, with the email suggesting review code would be coming “early next week”. Yes, alongside the final version of the game that’ll be hitting stores. “Clearly,” continues the post, “receiving a game so close to its release makes it impossible for us to deliver a timely review.” We can’t imagine for a second that TSA would get code any earlier, if indeed we get it at all. What we’ll do is let you know when it’s arrived and then try to get a review done as soon as possible. We strive to review before the game is released but sometimes it just doesn’t work that way – Batman’s the same, having been stuck in postal limbo it only arrived yesterday. The official line from EA, then, says that review code for Battlefield 3 is set for Tuesday to coincide with a ‘day one’ update. “DICE are perfectionists,” says the email, “they will not stop polishing the game until it is in your hands. The Day 1 update incorporates real-time feedback from the beta, ensuring that the consumer experience on launch day is outstanding. It is the actual consumer experience that we wish to be reviewed.” |

Didn't the same thing happen with Medal of Honor.

Also, Battlefield has obviously gone to gold, and the line about a day-one update is pure shit - as if the game will be unplayable without one. The truth is that good game or not, they're just scared that reviews might have negative effect on pre-orders. Another reason why pre-ordering games sucks... |
Re: Battlefield 3
I've cancelled my New Egg pre-order. I figure if the reviews are good and people here like it, I'll pick up the game with whatever deal Kmart has on launch week. Otherwise, I'll wait -- EA games tend to drop or go on sale pretty quickly.

Re: Battlefield 3
Kmart deal: $20 Gaming Coupon + Save $20 on X12 Turtle Beach or Save $30 on Sony 7.1 headset
I have no idea how much the headsets are originally to know if this is worthwhile. Amazon currently has the 7.1 for $87 and has had it for as low as $65 in the past. |
Re: Battlefield 3
The Sony one retails for $100. It's pretty nice actually. The boom mic feels kinda flimsy but works just fine and the pseudo-surround sound is a cool feature. If you needed a PS3 headset -- especially one that will keep things quiet around you while still allowing you to play comfortably, that's not a bad way to go
|
Re: Battlefield 3
Yeah, I have a good feeling this game is going to end up taking the same path as MOH did last year. An OK single player campaign with a couple “Oh shit!” moments thrown in here or there and a messy multiplayer if the beta was any indication (I know a lot of that has supposedly been fixed but time will tell soon enough). I really hope I’m wrong though because the game does look gorgeous and the sound effects are supposed to be amazing.
|
Re: Battlefield 3
The sound effects are amazing. But, yeah, they may have lost a lot of good faith thanks to the beta. The lack of reviews is definitely not looking good.
|
Re: Battlefield 3
There are many positive articles from gaming websites who've gotten to play a more recent build with larger maps, vehicles, destruction, regular damage, etc. They all suggest that the beta was a terrible choice by EA that shouldn't prevent us from keeping our pre-orders.
Also, I rarely see games that allow advance reviews anymore. And for a release of this magnitude I'm not surprised in the least that EA/DICE is playing everything very carefully. Especially after they botched the beta promotion so horrifically. They're going to wait as long as they can before anything goes live on this. |
Re: Battlefield 3
See but that doesn’t make any sense. As you said, they know they fucked up by releasing that beta. So it would only make sense for them to get as many positive reviews out there before the release as possible if the game is actually any good. Because most people are going to have a bad taste in their mouth after playing that beta and skip this one with MW3 right around the corner.
|
Re: Battlefield 3
I felt nearly alone when I said I didn't dig the beta, now I may be one of the only people keeping their pre-order?!
|
Re: Battlefield 3
It makes sense because it's EA. They don't care what you think.
And DICE, giving them the benefit of the doubt here, probably have been working up until the last minute. |
Re: Battlefield 3
I'll wait for reviews here. I canceled my preorder after the beta.

Re: Battlefield 3
So this is weird. Some people who already preordered the game at Amazon are getting a $20 credit but it’s not showing up if you go to preorder it now. Maybe they are trying to get people to keep their preorders as well?
"Dear Amazon.com Customer, Customers who have shown an interest in action games might like to know about "Battlefield 3 - Limited Edition," which releases on October 25. Pre-order for Xbox 360 or PS3 to receive a $20 promotional credit. All pre-orders come with Limited Edition content including the Back to Karkand expansion pack as well as the multiplayer Dog Tag Pack, an Amazon exclusive." |
Re: Battlefield 3
My pre-load from Amazon is live . Got the game for $41.99, can't beat that.

Re: Battlefield 3
Haha, well the credit thing over at Amazon sounds like a clusterfuck. A ton of reps are telling customers it’s only if you preordered the game yesterday between 6pm and midnight. Others are saying it was only a select few that received an e mail offer. There is a whole discussion forum over there full of responses. So yeah, sounds like the $20 credit thing might not be popping up after all.
