Well I went ahead and wiped my HDD clean (after I passed my sensitive data to an external HDD) and have been slowly reinstalling everything. Even Norton 360 reinstalled without a hitch (I'll keep it until my license expires and then look at the other solutions that were recommended). In fact, I'm posting from said PC right now. :)

I know you'll be using Norton for awhile, but I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It has a very small system footprint and I get daily virus/spyware definition updates. And best of all it doesn't intertwine itself into the system like a cancerous tumor like all the other flavors of AV software.

I've used Avast and AVG for years, but they got way too bloated and resource-heavy for my liking.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials as well. In fact, I re-installed it before I re-installed Norton. I like it because it sometimes catches things that Norton misses.

Somehow I wasn't even aware of Microsoft Security Essentials. I'll have to check that out, as a replacement for Avast.

This game made me end up jumping on a Microcenter deal for a core i7 + asus motherboard combo. Now I'm just waiting on a good graphics card deal to come out.

Nice. Make sure to get a good cooler for it. Battlefield games are CPU heavy. The stock cooler of my i5 goes crazy when I play. Since my case is a double decker, I need a low profile fan but all the ones I've found would force me to pull one of my RAM sticks.

Ended up getting a Corsair 212, which only after installation I realized is too large for my case. So...now I need a new case.

Who knew I'd end up building a whole new PC for this damn game?

I'm pretty committed to sticking with PS3. BC2 runs just fine, and I'd rather play on the big plasma in the living room than hunched over my desk in the office.

If that limits me to 24 players, I consider that a good thing since 24 feels great on most maps in BC2...Heavy Metal being the notable exception. With 24, you can run around a bit between objectives, but the more you get beyond that, the more it turns into a battle of attrition and twitch.

Preordered today...should arrive just before I get home from Afghanistan. :banana:

The same thing happened to me with a CoolerMaster. I ended up returning it for a full refund the next day. That said, given that my search for a low profile fan that wont force me to sacrifice some of my RAM is proving fruitless, I may have to hunt for a new case afterall. :(

I hope the larger HTPC cases are more accomodating since I don't want a tower in my setup.

I have my PC hooked up to my 52" LCD and my Onkyo 705 handles the sound. :D

My home's layout and spousal unit make that a difficult proposition for me.

Only option in my case would be a big TV for the office and a couch...and a new computer...and controller...and a keggerator...hmmm.

I know there are much better setups but for me (having previously only gamed on a small monitor on a desk in my room) it is awesome.

Hell yeah, big screen PC gaming is where it's at. Although even though I have a 64" Plasma, I still rather play some games on my desktop.

I'm now having the hard decision to make if I want to get the game on PC, XBOX or PS3.

Ugh.

PC is tempting because of the 64-player multiplayer, but I tend to prefer FPS of this nature on the console due to the controls.

I think I'm going to use a Xbox 360 controller for some vehicles and keyboard/mouse for everything else. Not sure how well that will work, but I'll see.

I don't think the Battlefield games support the 360 controller on PC. :(

Speaking of the PC controller, I hope Mass Effect 3 offers support for it. The combat is more Gears Of War/Uncharted in nature this time around so I don't think the ol' keyboard and mouse will suit it this time out.

Not sure why the Xbox 360 controller would be singled out. You could map whatever buttons you want as long as it supports mapping.

I thought only "Games For Windows" (or whatever the hell they're called) titles support the 360 controller.

Okay, so I haven't actually used the 360 controller on the PC yet (waiting for my wireless adapter), but with any other controller you just go into the menu and setup the mapping. I know people who play Trine using the 360 controller, and I don't believe that has the GFW tag. GFW is basically just a marketing ploy. GFWL is of course a bit more than that with it's awful infrastructure and achievements.

I wanna get the new 360 controller but it doesn't come with a wireless adapter. The old controller on the otherhand does. I know someone over at the Xbox thread showed me an adapter over at amazon.com but some of the customer reviews claimed it was a bootleg.

Don't worry about the fact that it is from a 3rd party. DealExtreme has them for under $10 shipped. I ordered one last week, should get it soon. Reviews on them are good.
