I just came to post the same thing. I had to pick my jaw up off the ground. Man, not so much the graphics, but why can't the consoles support 64 players? That would be amazing.

I assume processing power and the low amount of memory. I'm glad I'll be playing this on PC, it looks insane.

There's a good artilce in the lastest Gameinformer about the so-called biggest head-to-head game match with BFF:3 vs COD; MW3. In all honesty both games are setting some pretty serious new standards but what BF has done with No 3 has taken it to a new level. I just wish I had the money to do some upgrades to the pc for the PC version. I have some friends who are getting both versions.

I would love to enjoy the big battles for this on the PC, but I'll just be getting the 360 version. I'll also be buying MW3. I really wish we could have the capacity for players that the PC does. So disappointing.

Re: Battlefield 3

Yeah, it really is too bad for console players. Anyone who has played the 'Heavy Metal' map on the console version of BC2 knows how boring the really big maps are with only 24 players. You need 64 people just to fill them. Even Harvest Day feels pretty barren at times.

On the consoles, I almost always play the smaller maps. Oasis on conquest is probably the best map in BC2 for consoles.

chess 08-19-11 02:15 AM

Re: Battlefield 3

I think all of the maps except Heavy Metal feel about right on consoles, and I like that there's not some twitchy prick around every corner.

I also like the player limit because one organized squad can really have an impact. The more players you have, the less a 4 man squad can influence the outcome.

Atacama Desert is probably my favorite map overall, and it's not one of the smaller ones.

Re: Battlefield 3

I'm actually looking forward to the co-op play. It's been awhile since the COD:World at War where you could do 4-player coop campaign which I miss. BF:3 looks like it'll offer more than enough for SP, co-op and MP.

Re: Battlefield 3

Would console players be bummed about having 24-person multi-player if they didn't have the 64-person multi-player to compare it to? I think not. It's all relative.

I'm a little bummed by the lack of split-screen co-op. That would have been nice.

The RAM of my PC died (4 GB down the drain) so I decided it was upgrade time. I ordered a Corsair High Perform Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600MHz 4-pack of RAM and a XFX Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition 1GB DDR5 PCIe video card (to replace my Sapphire Radeon HD 5670) from TigerDirect.

Once it's all installed, my new setup will be the following:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Corsair High Perform Vengeance 16GB (4 × 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz
XFX Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition 1GB DDR5 PCIe
MSI P55M-GD41 Mainboard
Aerocool PGS Qx-2000

Can't wait to play Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3 on that setup. :D

Yeah, I knew it was overkill when I placed the order but overkill is underrated. :D

Well you could always run half of it as a RAM drive, Battlefield 3 might fit on it.

Please forgive my ignorance but could you explain that?

EDIT: Okay, I looked up what a RAM drive is. Wouldn't it be easier to simply buy a SSD?

flashburn 08-29-11 05:04 AM

Re: Battlefield 3

A RAM drive would be way faster than an SSD, I don't think it's difficult to setup either. However the space would of course be a lot more limited than an SSD.

Does data stored on a RAM drive stay there after a reboot? I don't think it does.

No, the software will copy back and forth from the physical drive before/after reboot. It's not a big deal, save games should be stored in Documents & Settings. Unexpected powerloss shouldn't really matter.

This is something far from normal. Regular PC gaming isn't nearly as complicated as that discussion sounds nor people presume.

Any tips for upgrading the graphics card in time for BF3? I'm running a dual core E6550 with a 8800 GTS card. The cpu upgrade would require a mobo upgrade as well, so I'd like to avoid that. Started looking at the number of gpu options out there and it's ridiculous.

Any tips on best bang for the buck? I know for sure the 8800 GTS won't even touch it on minimum settings.

I've never used any Ram Drive software, but the basic idea is you tell it what content you want to be mirrored on the Ram Drive, and then when the machine reboots it will copy over the data again. It all would happen behind the scenes.

Honestly it's probably not worth the hassle unless you are bored or don't already have an SSD and of course you have the RAM to spare.

I'm biased, but a AMD Radeon 6850/6870 would be more than enough to handle Battlefield 3 at high resolutions. You can also get a free copy of Deus Ex and Dirt 3:

Hopefully newegg is better at honouring that deal than TigerDirect. TigerDirect is playing dumb on this after I just bought a 6850 from them, even though the card I purchased is linked on their promo page.

To add insult to injury, the only way to find TigerDirect's page for this promo is to follow the link in AMD's promo page. If you search "deus ex" on TigerDirect's webpage, the only video card that shows up isn't even listed in their promo page. -ohbfrank-

Can't wait to play Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3 on that setup. :D

So after my new RAM and video card arrived, it turns out my MSI P55M-GD41 Mainboard was the real culprit. So I got an Asus P7H55-M PRO as a replacement.

My current setup is the following:

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Corsair High Perform Vengeance 16GB (4 × 4GB) DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 750 @ 2.67GHz
XFX Radeon HD 6850 Black Edition 1GB DDR5 PCIe
Asus P7H55-M PRO
Aerocool PGS Qx-2000

In theory that should be the end of it but now I'm enduring a very weird problem. After I re-installed my copy of Windows 7 Professional, I re-installed my copy of Norton 360 4.0. As it was upgrading me to 5.0 (the version I had before my MSI mobo died), I got a blue screen error and the PC restarted. It then refused to start up Windows until it repaired.

I let it repair and started from scratch. I tried installing Norton 360 again and, before it even finished installing the 4.0 version of the program, I got the same blue screen crash and restart. It made me run the repair once again.

After a few unsuccessful tries, I decided to first let Windows download and install all the drivers and updates it desired (there were over 90 updates). Then I downloaded the latest version of Catalyst for my Radeon HD 6850. I also installed the various drivers and utilities that came in the DVD with my new mobo. So far, so good. I even restarted a few times to be sure.

Assuming all was fine, I decided to finally install Norton 360 and... It crashed again. This time, the windows repair even told me it couldn't find a solution to the problem (after it even claimed to check online) and just shut down my PC. So I just booted it back up and installed Catalyst and just shut down the PC after Windows downloaded/installed 40+ updates (part of the 90+ updates I lost due to the repairs).

I'm at a loss. Why would Norton be causing my computer to crash when it worked fine with my previous setup?

Because Norton is a GIANT pile of shit. Stay away from Norton and Symantec. Just get Avast or AVG, they are both free. I've used Avast for several years and it does a great job of catching malicious software and websites.

Well that's a shame since, before my previous mobo dying, I had just renewed Norton 360 for another two years.
