Are people really going to buy this device? Seems to me if you're into mobile gaming these days you have a smart phone or want one.

Just my opinion, but I feel that touchscreens are not suitable at all for action games.

But for those that won't spend much time playing games on the go, or sticks to certain types of games, yes, a phone would suffice.

Yeah, I think cell phones will kill the iPod Touch market completely in another year or so (sales are down a lot already), but there is definitely room in the gaming space for something as advanced as the Vita to compete. I'm looking forward to near PS3 quality games without being tied to my theater room to play.

It does seem odd that, for handheld games you have a choice between $0.99 phone games...or you can pay 40x as much for a DS/PSP title.

The Vita is easily badass enough to not be shamed when put next to the latest phones and the control inputs allow for more gaming options. That, along with the kind of high end library you expect from a PSP/DS, and they have my money.

Most of the polished 99c games started at $9.99 though. There are many PSP (and PS3/PSN) titles that have been marked down from original $40 to $20/$10/$5 range, especially with the PSN+ sales.

I'm hoping for a PSP trade-in deal on this with Gamestop. I called the other day and they said they don't know of one yet and the trade value for the PSP-2000 was 30 bucks. Think I'll keep it for now.

Launches Feb 22.

Anyone getting the 3G version and want to share why? I'm still not sure what the draw is, if you can't play online and your download speed is capped.

From what I've seen around the nets, the answer is pretty much no one.

I think I will wait for the Bioshock game. Unless GS has a really good promotion if you upgrade from a PSP 3001, or something like that.

And yeah, wifi only.

GameStop has revealed prices for the four memory cards, which will be available with the new console. The 4GB memory card will cost $29.99; the 8GB will cost $44.99; the 16GB will cost $69.99; and the 32GB memory card will cost $119.99, almost half the price of the PlayStation Vita itself.

Sony is really trying to make me cancel my pre-order, aren't they?

I already did I assumed it would have internal storage like the Go. Once I heard that wasn't the case I canceled. Now I see it was a good idea.

I haven't followed the news, but does it not take Memory Stick Pro Duo for storage?

I'm thisclose to cancelling mine as well. I think if anything I might be better off waiting until next Black Friday seeing the several deals that came for the 3DS this year. We'll see, I guess. No need to cancel yet.

That's so two-sytems-ago. The PSPGo didn't either. This one uses a new proprietary storage system. I think this is where Sony really makes their money until the competitors come up with their own version. It's like ink jet cartridges.

re: Official PS Vita / PlayStation TV Thread

Wait a sec...I thought the games themselves would come on their own memory card when you purchased them or are you just getting a code to download them? Doesn't make sense that system wouldn't have sufficient internal memory if you could only download games. I believe this system will function just like a Nintendo DS....games will come on a Sony proprietary memory card and you have the option to purchase a memory card to store pictures, movies, and downloaded games from the PSN store. I don't see any problem with this format. The memory card isn't necessary, it's optional.

re: Official PS Vita / PlayStation TV Thread

I think Setzer is correct. If the games are flash memory based, they should have internal saves like DS games. I think the extra cards are only for downloaded games through PSN.

That's correct, though all games will be available for PSN download as well, as I recall.

could != should

From a Joystiq article.
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/re...a-memory-card/

Known launch window games requiring separate memory cards include Ridge Racer, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, Sega's golf game @Field, Hot Shots Golf 6, the AR title Monster Radar, and the assuredly Japan-only Dream Club Zero Portable. Everything else saves to memory included on the game itself -- with one exception: the status of (sigh) Touch My Katamari is unannounced.

re: Official PS Vita / PlayStation TV Thread

Damn. If that's the case, I'll be cancelling my preorder. That will artificially raise the price to about $300. What could possibly make those games require a memory card other than Sony putting in some un-needed check?

Keeps publisher costs down because they can buy the smaller size card and pass that onto the consumer.

That might be the case but I don't believe it. Save file are so minuscule; no way it would make publishers use a higher capacity card for their games.
