What games would you recommend for a new PS3 owner?
Just picked up a PS3 last week, primarily as a media center (Blu-ray/Netflix/Hulu), and was thinking about getting a few more games for it. Got the latest Ratchet and Clank and LittleBigPlanet for the wife (she's into platformers). Will probably get the previous two R&C, having fun with the current one.
As for me, I enjoy shooters (CoD:MW, Borderlands and Fallout3 on the PC) but I've had iffy experience with fps on consoles. Guess in my old age, my thumbs just aren't as accurate as they used to be.
I did download the demos for Uncharted and Enslaved. Enjoyed them both, will probably pick them up. Also enjoyed the demo for Motorstorm, sometimes mindless racing can be good.
Don't care for sports games. Will probably get Rock Band 3, cause the wife enjoys playing it at a friend's house.
Something with online play would be cool, but I'm not very tolerant of being owned by wired teens with a need to show everybody how much free time they've got to master a video game. I got good enough at CoD:MW to do some owning myself, but haven't played that in months.
Was thinking about GT5, mostly cause of my love of Top Gear (UK), but not sure how playable it is for someone not interested in buying a steering wheel.
So, any recommendations? Anything a n00b PS3 owner should know about?

You should check out Infamous. Great third-person shooter, Infamous 2 should be coming out this year and can't wait. Check out PSN, Flower is a good one to download your wife might like it.

Red Dead Redemption is HIGHLY recommended. I never got into the GTA games, but loved this one. As an older gamer myself, I didn't find it terribly demanding on my hand-eye coordination. Even when I died (or failed a critical mission), the game was very forgiving to getting back on track. But besides that ... it's a fantastic game that sucks you right in.

Killzone 1 & 2 (although I've had some problems w/ Killzone 1 [a PS2 game] playing properly on some TVs)
Resistance 1 & 2
Mirror's Edge (enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would)
Savage Moon (downloadable from the store, if you like tower defense games)

I also just picked up a PS3 after christmas. I splurged and bought GT5, its the least played game so far. For driving games I have been playing Midnight Club Racing/LA Edition, losts of fun not to hard, great graphics. Also playing a little bit of BLUR with my son, its a lot like mario cart except with real cars, has powerups, split screen and seems like a lot of fun. I would wait on GT5, the price will come down I regret spending the $60 for it.
I have been sticking with Greatest Hits Games like Ratchet Clanks, LBP. Im guessing games like Red Dead Redemption will come down in price shortly and I will give that a try. Also having a lot of fun with Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones in coop mode with kids.

The OP hit my faves already; Uncharted 1 & 2, Ratchet- ToD & CiT, Enslaved(avoid Quest for Booty), so I'll say Rock Band 3, Prince of Persia (2008) and Flower. Oh and everyone seems to love Burnout: Paradise, which is a better experience on the PS3.
Awesome game, but definitely play it without guns. It's a way more satisfying experience. Then again, with a PC FPS preference, Steam might be the way to go for that one.

For a racing game Burnout Paradise is great
Some good fun games to be had for cheap(under $20 bucks): Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Red Faction 2, Warhawk, Metal Gear Solid 4
PS3 exclusives: Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Infamous, Modnation Racers, God of War III, Heavy Rain
(more of an interactive movie)
Games with multiplayer support:Red Dead Redemption, Resistance 2, Killzone2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Borderlands, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, Call of Duty: Black Ops, CoD:Modern Warfare 2
Here we have a pretty faithful Warhawk following that gets together every week for our Weekly Tuesday Warhawk night. The guys are easy on new players. you just have to leyt them know ahead of time that you will be joining so they can schedule non DLC matches if you don't have the DLC.
We also have a faithful Call of Duty group that gets together on their Weekly Thursday Call of Duty night. Black Ops is now what we play -used to be MW2. The guys play private matches and use some custom match types to keep things fun. A good place to try out Black Ops
Right now there is also a small group that is running with Battlefield Bad Company 2 (get the Ultimate Edition - totally worth it) and I am sure once the new TV season is over we'll get the Weekly rotating games nights going again. Where we organise to run through some lesser known or supported multiplayer games

Bionic Commando Re-armed (PSN)
Shooters: I'm not a big fan of the PS3 exclusive shooters (Resistance 1/2, KillZone 2 all felt incredibly generic to me) but if you can get past the somewhat cumbersome PS3 controller, definitely pick up Bad Company 2, Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops.
GT5: I'd personally rent it first, I'm a huge Top Gear fan as well but GT5 somehow lulls me to sleep within moments.
Definitely check out Uncharted and, more specifically, Uncharted 2. You may also enjoy the older Prince of Persia games (the remastered Sands of Time is available on PSN) if you haven't already played them. BioShock is a fun (though pipe dream gets tedious pretty quick) game thats worth your time, same goes for Heavy Rain which is more an interactive movie -- but is pretty rewarding if you can make it past the first couple chapters (which feature some of the most stilted dialog ever).

In the same vein as God of War III and Uncharted, I'd say try out Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. For me, that was great fun, and a nice change from the faster paced games others are suggesting.

once the update to add trophies and custom soundtracks was added to the PS3 version the graphical difference made it obvious the PS3 version was the better choice.

In addition to some that have already been mentioned, I would suggest Wipeout HD from PSN.

Re: What games would you recommend for a new PS3 owner?
Two games I haven't seen anyone mention is PixelJunk Shooter and PixelJunk Eden (both PSN). I believe both have demos, so definitely give those a shot. Shooter is short, but a really well made game (there's also a sequel coming soon). Eden is more of an acquired taste and can be rage-inducingly frustrating at times, but still a great game.
Otherwise, for exclusives, there's Uncharted 1 & 2, God Of War III, Ratchet & Clank, inFamous, and Flower (PSN) at the top of my list. Great non-exclusives include Burnout Paradise, Rock Band 3, Just Cause 2, Dead Space, Bioshock 1 & 2, and Batman AA. I'm sure there's plenty I'm forgetting, but these were just what I could think of off the top of my head.

Re: What games would you recommend for a new PS3 owner?
Advice is all over the place, so I'll try to be definitive (IMO, of course)
First Person Shooter (multiplayer): Battlefield Bad Company 2 (more team friendly, less twitchy)
First Person Single-player: Bioshock 1&2; Fallout 3; Oblivion; Orange Box (even if it's just for Portal)
Third Person Adventure/Action: Batman: Arkham Asylum; Uncharted 1&2; Assassin's Creed 2; Darksiders; Infamous; Ratchet and Clank (both); Dead Space; Enslaved; God of War 3; Metal Gear Solid 4; Red Dead Redemption; Mass Effect 2
Driving/Racing: Burnout Paradise (street); Modnation Racers (Kart)
Music: Rock Band...recommend a RB2 bundle on the cheap
Third Person Shooter (multiplayer): Warhawk (We've played every Tuesday since March 2009. Review from GameTrailers with only negatives (price and tutorial) no longer an issue
Sorry, it's my pet game.
If the wife likes platformers and you didn't play them on PS2, the Sly Collection would make a lot of sense. I'd guess that she'd enjoy the Prince of Persia games as well, and they are dirt cheap.
Finally, a decent 2009 (so no Red Dead, Battlefield BC2, Modnation, GoW3, Mass Effect 2, etc.) video from IGN:

I read somewhere that the patch fixed the issues that were mentioned for the Orange Box
