Yeah, having an affinity for the setting of these games goes a long ways to liking it and how long you'll play it for. I dig the rich, lush and varied fantasy setting of Oblivion and put well over 100 hours into it. Fallout 3, I played for maybe 20 hours, and I was tired of New Vegas after maybe 5. Regardless of the quirky humor, the oppressively drab landscapes which rarely changed, got really old and kept me from caring to see what's around the corner like in Oblivion. Because what was around the corner in Fallout was just more of the same...

So yeah, my videogame-boner for SkyRim right now is pretty huge!

is there any kind of multiplayer element to this?

NOT that I want there to be, just asking.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

no

'It's not wrong or unreasonable for people to want to experience a game with their friends, or want to do things with folks online. There's nothing wrong with that at all. What we've tried to do is help people understand that in game development, it's all about trade-offs. One of our mantras here is that you can do anything - you just can't do everything.

So certainly we could do multiplayer. Unquestionably. It's not a thing we're technically incapable of figuring out. But when we draw up the list of things we'd like to have cut or change in order to support that feature, what we end up with is unpalatable. It'd make a lesser version of the game. And there is no doubt on the dev side that that is the case."

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

So, I am definatly getting this. My question is how much worse is the PS3 version going to be? I would like to play with the PS3 headphones vs. the sound turned way down on 360, but the PS3 version of Oblivion seemed to have more bugs that were never fixed.

I am, but I'm probably going to wait for a patch or two. Plus, Steam has gotten me so spoiled on deals that I feel like I have to wait for a sale.

Orangecrush, I think it will be different for the PS3 version this time. The PS3 version of Oblivion was a late port that didn't seem to get much attention. I don't think they even had any patches for the problems unique to that version. This time, however, it's being developed from the ground up for all systems, so they should all get the same treatment.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

Okay, I played Morrowind a bit and liked it, but Oblivion wasn't all that great. Seemed boring, as in I was either super powerful or super weak.

Is this one supposed to be different?

Maybe I wanted them to be more like Fallout 3

And I wanted Fallout 3 to be like Oblivion. I put over 100 hours into Oblivion, barely 10 in FO3 and New Vegas bored me instantly. I think it was the repetition of the same drab environments over and over in those games, where as Oblivion always felt fresh.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I liked them all and put over 100 hours into each! FO3's environments were no less repetitive than "exploring" the exact same caves and dungeons a thousand times in Oblivion. If anything, the variety was improved.

Hopefully this is something that's improved upon all around in Skyrim, and I imagine that it will be since this has been one of the major criticisms of all Bethesda games this generation.

Same here. Turns out walking around a drab post-apocalyptic landscape did not inspire me to keep playing.

I think I got maybe 20 hours in.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I spent plenty of time in Oblivion, and am currently doing the same in Fallout 3, which I only started playing a few weeks ago.

They both have their share of repetitive environments. Oh look, more metro tunnel/sewers, great. However, I loved them both.

Here is a vid of 20 minutes of gameplay. I am not a big RPG gamer, but this may be the most incredible game I have ever seen. I am worried my head will explode while playing it.

Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim -- November 2011

I agree that Fallout 3s world lacked visual appeal. But I thought there were a lot of interesting areas and monster designs and the quests were great. But yeah, it definitely wasn't as fun to just go exploring as Morrowind or Oblivion.

One thing I did like about Fallout were the little details in the world. Like when you come across that church where the mutants have kidnapped some poor woman and you get to rescue or murder her. I also remember finding a barn, and there was a skeleton upstairs with a rifle and radio. I like little touches like that. Skyrim is supposed to be filled with them.

I've already requested the 11th and 14th off from work for this game. I'm more excited for it than I am for any of the holidays.

I pre-ordered 3 copies from Amazon ($10 credit each), 2 for gifts. I paid the $1 to get it on 11/11/11.

I. CAN. NOT. WAIT. I am finishing Oblivion again meanwhile.
