Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I had $150 in gift cards for Future Shop so I got this, along with a couple of games (paid for separately). So far, we've been having a ball playing with it. Definitely not for hardcore gamers, but great for the family.

As noted by many, you definitely need to have a fair amount of room for this. Not an issue for us, but it would be a waste of money for those without the room.

I admit I haven't been following this too closely, but the more I hear about it, the more I think it might be fun for the kids (they're 8 and 4). However, we've got the Xbox hooked up to a projector. Is that an issue because of 1) the room being dark and 2) running the wire to the Xbox?

Same here.

1. As I've mentioned in another thread, I also think Sony's Move will be the better gimmicky game interface and will win this current battle.

2. I don't have the space for Kinect.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

The space required for it to work properly is laughable. I have my 360 in my bedroom and am not about to rearrange everything to play some gimmicky games, even if MS was giving the Kinect away free.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

No, it's too gimmicky for me. It seems like a better fit for little kids.

I have exactly six feet of clearance in front of my TV and there's no chance of making any more. Is it even worth buying?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I am not interested. The motion control fad will be over soon (I hope), so unless there is some killer app (unlikely) for Kinect and under $100, I would never consider buying one.

hmmm...that is gonna cut it close. I would see what the return policy is where you would buy it from. You could try it out and if it doesn't work you can take it back hopefully.

Joystiq has an interesting look at their staffers gaming rooms to see if they are Kinect-worthy. From the sounds of it, one should definitely measure their gaming space before purchasing.

Oddly I think Dance Central may be that killer app.

Then again, it is Harmonix and seeing as I'm a fanboy of theirs (Frequency, Amplitude, Guitar Hero 1/2, Rock Band) I applaude their potential success with it. Also the first game of theirs I have no interest in playing

Also, the distance thing is going to be a problem with anything camera based. You can't expect to have your full body in view of the camera while standing 3 ft away from it. It's an issue on the Move and Kinect, but common sense kind of suggests that anyway. Wonder if you can put it at a higher angle.

i have mine hooked up to a projector. my room is dark and i have no issues. i just had to turn the bathroom light on which is off to the side of my home theater room. as for the cable running to the xbox, my xbox is above the screen so that's not an issue for me. if yours is back by the projector you'll probably need to buy a really long usb extension cable along with the kinect.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I played my Kinect last night with very little light in the room. It worked fine. The only issue playing it in the dark is the pics it takes of you during your gameplay don't come out good.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

We spent the last evening at a friends house who spent entirely too much money on this garbage.

Two gaming-savvy couples in their late 20s/early 30s, and three kids ranging from 5-8 and everybody thought it was lame. Even the super Xbox fanboy who waited in line for it.

The women jabbered about how it made the entertainment system look ugly.

Good job Microsoft? Nope.

It's going to be the non-gaming savvy people who enjoy this though.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I don't know. My wife LOVES her Wii. By gaming-savvy, I don't mean to imply hard-core gamers. We just aren't novices either.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I picked this up and the wife and I love it! I'm also a pretty heavy gamer so I don't see why you are obligated to hate Kinect if you also play Fallout and COD.

It's very responsive and ran very smooth. We played for hours last night (Adventures, Kinect Sports, Dance Central) and had a ball all night.

We have a projector and it works well in no light but we kept the lights on so we could see the pictures.

There really is a sense of wonder when messing with this. Money well spent.

I saw a news article that the early sales had been good. I noticed Amazon is currently sold out. I wonder how many they got in.

Does the Kinect NEED to be above or below your TV and directly centered, or can you get away with putting it somewhere else?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

I think as long as you're ok with not looking directly ahead, it can be somewhere else. You have to be centered in the camera. If you aren't also centered with the display, it'll be awkward for you - not Kinect.

The directions that came with it say it should be on the tv centerline between 2 and 6 feet above the ground.

Spoken like someone who's never cursed at his PS Eye for having to place it on a six inch stack of CDs and bent it all the way to the floor in order to try to get it to display an Eye Pet.

So is this a camera or a wii type of motion thing? Either way, I'll pass. I'm heterosexual.

C'mon, motion is half the battle even for us heteros. And a camera can't hurt either.
