Because by your own words you're not very excited about it!

Never have seen that before and don't remember it at all. What's sad is the movements the guy was doing kinda resembles the people on the Kinect commercials.

My favorite part of that video is: "Ya mayyyyyyyy have to cut it some slack!"

I enjoy video games, I have disposable income to buy it. I may not play it much now, but in a couple of months -- who knows?

I will buy one eventually, but it's too cost prohibitive to pick up Kinect + games right now. Pretty much the same as any hardware launch. I'll wait until there are lots of good games available at cheaper prices, rather than pay the early adopter premium.

^ I think you'll be waiting a long time for "lots of good games."

Everything about that video was awesome. From the complicated set up, to the unintuitive labeling of the stickers to the totally cliched early-90s hairdos and clothing. Loved the black dude getting apparently owned by the dork flailing around his Activator.
I get the appeal -- who could ever go back to pressing a start button to pause your game after the being introduced to the immersive and intuitive act of throwing your arms backwards at a 45 degree angle and posing like a Rolls-Royce hood ornament instead?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

So far this thing is great. My living room is dark as hell and it works flawlessly. It was pretty much "plug into wall and usb on xbox" and I was good to go. The xbox (I have an old one) auto detects the divice, downloads some stuff, then fires up a setup/tutorial.

The dashboard navigation and voice commands are great as well, and chatting in a party while walking around the house/kitchen is my favorite so far.

The only game I have popped in was Kinect Sports. I played a soccer mini game and bowling a few times. Bowling is just as good, if not better than Wii Sports. It seems more natural than holding a remote, plus I suck at it so it's more authentic :)

I'll try Dance Central and Adventures in a bit. I'm already tired after an hour of Sports.

And in related news I heard all Gamestop managers get a $1,000 bonus for every Kinect sold.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever read.

We know the bonus cannot be greater than the difference between a new purchase and selling it back to Gamestop. Otherwise they'd simply buy them all themselves.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

Lol. That would be an awesome incentive. Seriously though, I own a Wii and played most of the Move games. This is easily less expensive, better, and more interactive than both of them. If you hate family/party type gaming, you still will hate it. If you want to jump around in front of the couch and have fun, it's awesome.

I hope they integrate it into other games in the future. Perhaps commanding troops in an RTS or stuff like menus/naviagation in something like Mass Effect or Dead Space.

RTS with Minority Report interface. Why not? They've made Surface and the idea is similar.

Voted no but might in the future if the Star Wars game turns out to be good.

How were Dance Central and KA? I'm looking to pick up DC when I get the Kinect tomorrow morning.

Joystiq slammed it in their review claiming it was clunky, more time consuming than using a controller for navigation, and the biggest problem, it only works in spacious areas! If you live in a small apartment, it won't work.

I hope this thing crashes and burns and Microsoft will stop trying to steal Nintendo's casual market.

Because this type of interface works best for short burst types of simple games. You really want to be holding your arm up in the air for long periods of times directing troops? (and we're still not sure if you'd even be allowed to sit down during this!)

Plus, without buttons, how exactly would that work? How would it know when you are done selecting a group of troops? Did you read how it knows when you "let go" of the ball in bowling? It GUESSES. With no button, there's no way to precisely say "i've let go of the ball". It'd be just as bad if not WAY worse in a RTS.

Of course there already is a console RTS game you can play (and play quite well) with a motion controller.

I may end up buying two. One for my sisters b-day/ x-mas present and another one to sell on E-Bay. Seems like it'll be a hot x-mas item.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?

got my kinect this morning and just played it for a half an hour. for the record, i'm more of an xbox guy than a nintendo or sony fan. i had a wii but sold it a while back. never owned a ps3 and really don't have any desire to either. i've played the move and enjoyed it, but with all the required wands and navigation controllers for two people to play, it's way too fucking expensive. and don't even bring up the fact that i can use a dual shock in lieu of the navcon; i know this, and it's cumbersome, and a last resort only for people who are too cheap to buy the navcons.

with that out of the way...

i have it set up in my home theater where i have a projector and about 12' of space between my chairs and the screen. i can play the games and it detects me fine without any of the lights in the room turned on. i know a lot of people have a problem of not enough space, but i have the opposite problem. i want to stand far away, just in front of the projector where the shadow of my head won't block the screen, but the kinect makes me move forward so my head does pop up on the screen. not a problem for most people obviously, but it's one for me, and i might have to move the kinect down to the ground (it's about 6-7' off the ground right now) and forward a bit to remedy this, though i'd really rather not.

i've got kinect adventures, kinect sports, and dance central, though i've only had time to play KA so far. my first impressions are much like everyone elses: this is interesting technology and it's cool to think of where it could go, but this game in particular, for the most, blows. the only "adventure" i had any fun with is the rafting one. the rest i played once and that was enough for me. the ball one where you hit the ball to break the blocks looked like it could be fun but the lag absolutely ruined it. you have to time your movements way before the ball is at your character just to give your avatar time to react. this is annoying since you're watching the ball and naturally you want to wait and hit it when it approaches your character, but doing so means the ball will just fly by you as your avatar waits to swing.

that's all for now, i'll post more later.

No, I hardly ever fire up the Wii. I will pass on this.
