Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

I think this series may have been the most honest Star Wars game. It really maintained the feeling of the epic space dogfighting and team strategy. It's hard to believe this was almost 15 years ago and nothing has really topped it.

FWIW (which is almost nothing at this point) LucasArts teased about some kind of XvT update in the wake of Monkey Island's revamp in a G4 interview back on Aug 4 2009. But nothing has come of this pending "announcement."

Where's the best place to get a copy of the last entry in the series X-Wing: Alliance? I missed this when it was released.

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

I loved X-Wing Alliance. It always bugged me that the console-based SW games were always planet bound when flying the fighters.

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

There's a ton of info here: http://www.xwingalliance.net/ (although the last post was 5 years ago )

And you can purchase here: http://www.google.com/products/catal...d=0CBMQ8wIwAg#

I devoted countless hours to this game and it had some of the best Star Wars cutscenes you could find at the time.

Truthfully, I'm more hoping for Battlefront III than anything. If they could mix the SW universe with a CoD type MP, there would be some serious magic there. My guess is they don't have it in 'em though.

The original X-Wing and Tie Fighter games consumed hundreds of hours on my old 486. Always thought I'd dig them out to play through them again. I wonder if they'd even work on current PCs, after I find an external floppy drive.....

Geez. Guess I won't be digging out my old disks. Forgot I needed that. There's got to be a torrent out there somewhere.

I absolutely loved these games. As jdpatri said above, nothing has ever come close to simulating the epicness of space battles (small fighters vs large battle cruisers, dog fighting) like these games did. Also agree that this would make a killing if they re-release it for PSN and Live!.

I think I still have my disks somewhere. I should go look...

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

I logged tons of hours on XWing and Tie Fighter back in college. I have no idea where my copy of those are. However, they did update them sorta in a three-pack called X-Wing Collector Series which works on 95, 98, and I would assume XP as well. Looks like it can be had for $30 on Amazon. Might have to look in Half Price Books next time, that might be a better bet.

I forgot about all the shit I needed for PC games.

I do wonder where the hell my thrustmasters went.

Yeah, I had a nice chuckle at those gargantuan connectors they had.

Wasn't there a Millenium Falcon sim too or was that X-Wing: Alliance?

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

Tie Fighter is easily in my top 5 all-time games. While I'm sure there were others that came before, I remember this being the first game I played where you played as the bad guys which of course was the coolest thing ever when I was 13. I never played X-Wing Alliance, but I do have the collector's series CD-Rom with the other games. It definitely works on XP, but I believe you need to download a patch from the LucasArts website. It was still available there as of 3 or 4 years ago.

While I would love for a revamp to this series, I can't imagine playing it on my PS3. There were just too many keyboard commands. I'm sure it could be done, but I feel like PC is still the best platform for this.

That was in Alliance I believe, along with being able to fly A-wings, B-wings and maybe even V-wings?

Yes..the old 486 25mhz with like 4 megs of memory......

The X-Wing Collector's Disc which I picked up after I had owned the actual X-Wing game on floppy is most likely my favorite game of all time. The hours and hours logged fighting for the Alliance were hours well spent. This thread makes me want to find an old copy and play it again. I could always run it in an emulator via dosbox.

Hell yes it could be done. Don't cast any doubt in the minds of people with the ability to pull this off.

The PC is best... but I really believe that mapping most of the controls to the controller wouldn't be impossible. You could push squad commands with the directional pad, HUD maps with select, combinations with L2 or R2 certainly couldn't be any more difficult than remembering keyboard shortcuts. It might not be 100% faithful but I'm certainly not going to complain if they do a competent job. Console deficiencies be damned; I'd much rather play a flight sim on my 60" TV from the comfort of my couch. This is why I stopped gaming (anything other than Civilization anyway) on the PC in the first place. That and I stopped being computer savvy about the time I went to college.

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

Should we link this thread to Lucasarts and tell them there are AT LEAST 13 people who would be all over this if they rebranded the series??

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

If you do some random searches, you'll find there are a lot more than 13 of us.

When I was looking for more information on that aforementioned rumor, I found plenty of rabid fans clamoring for more information. If they don't know there's a following for these games, they're just not paying attention.

On second thought, I retract that last statement. I think it's pretty clear they're really not paying any attention. None whatsoever.

Re: The X-Wing vs Tie Fighter appreciation thread

I loved this series. I had X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. I remember when the Rebel Alliance series came out and everyone loved it and I couldn't figure out why, as it was just an on-the-rails shooter and thus far less exciting than the free for all that was the X-Wing games. I would buy another one in a hot second. I checked Amazon and all the X-Wing/Tie Fighters games only go up to Windows ME.
