I'll put on the contrarian cap and say I'll be picking up the Matchbox Twenty pack for sure.

Yeah. I saw that. I just looked at the forum on the Rock Band page. Apparently its a known issue and they are working on a fix for it.

So at this point, I don't think anyone can join groups for goals.

I guess it wouldn't be a Harmonix joint if something wasn't broken at launch. ;)

Fortunately I like nearly everything else about the game. I'm still having trouble getting Gold Stars on most of the included songs, but I'm at the point where I can get 5 stars on pretty much everything. I guess I need to play with more loadouts.

True.

5 stars are eluding me for most songs. I can get 4-4.5 without issue. I did gold star one song but haven't come close to anything else. Probably need to work on different load outs as well. I've been using Road Rage + Blast Notes + super <instrument> which ever is highest rated in the song details.

That's the gold package for me. But I rarely - if ever - pick anything other than guitar as the super instrument. I would use drums but since you should default to your super track when you've filled the other instruments it's too hard to move back and forth to grab the easy Blast Notes and Power Notes.

Best advice is to focus on hitting Blast Notes and switch tracks as necessary to get your power notes to fill your Road Rage. You'll fill most tracks naturally just switching back and forth. Also at the end of the song, just play your Super Track even if you haven't filled the others. The Blitz multiplier (just don't fuck up) plus the track multiplier at the end make that instrument worth a crapton of points.

I think it might be time to start a new thread, this one is getting really long.

TWSS /obligatory

Is there a problem with the length? I just read the new posts myself ;)

Hey gang,

We just deployed a new, AWESOME, update to RB World!

Firstly, we've added a cool new feature to Score Wars. Currently, for 20 coins (because of Nord's magnanimity, we may UP the cost.) you can pay to see your Score War opponent's power-up loadout for 20 seconds. This is a BIG DEAL. Nord's already griefing me about it.

Secondly, we've added the ability to leave goals. If, like me, you accidentally started the Grohl Goal all by yourself and would rather join friends, you can now quit any goals you have started, then jump back in with friends.

Related to that last one, we've fixed a bug where your friends weren't all showing up as Join-able when you click on a goal to join. Now they should be there!

Go forth and prosper. Wage all of the Score Wars.

I'm down to 3 Blitz songs I still can't GS. They're not very difficult, but they seem to require Jackpot:

Kids in the Street
Shout
Sing

Anyone beat these and have tips?

marginal 09-07-12 06:10 PM

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

Haven't GSed those yet, but Shout has one track (yellow?) that has really long sustained notes that are great for Jackpot. (Seems like it to me, anyway... not sure how the scoring works compared to individual notes, but I was racking up 50K runs with Jackpot).

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

Sweet tip, thanks! I got the other two just now, so Shout is all that's left for me.

I have a feeling I'm about to get real sick of this song.

marginal 09-07-12 07:09 PM

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

Looking back, I think I also had the Super Guitar track power-up, which I think is the one with the sustained notes. That probably explains why the Jackpot payout was huge.

EDIT: Yep, I just played it and got two Jackpot runs that were over 65K each (but blew a third one and didn't get gold).

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

Yeah, I got it first try. It's counter-intuitive to choose guitar because it's not a guitar-heavy song. But the sustains x19 multiplier x3 jackpot = ginormous!

I don't like those Matchbox 20 songs but it's interesting seeing them added.

The tips for Shout worked perfectly. Couldn't really make it happen with Cult of Personality using the same powerups. Had to go back to Road Rage and try over and over to get it. Eventually I got lucky in the solo and got enough points.

Getting all the gold stars for the Blitz songs is going to take this old man some time.

I had a bitch of a time 5-starring Cult of Personality... not looking forward to trying for GS. And of course, I can't remember the powerups I used to 5-star it. (I don't suppose the game stores that info anywhere, does it?)

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

16 songs down on the Grohl goal. I was able to quit the goal I started since I hadn't played any songs yet and join up with Gramps. I had all the Nirvana songs, so that was an easy start. I only have a handful of Foo Fighters songs and maybe 80% of the other misc songs. Probably could have done it on my own doubling up in Blitz and Rock Band, but its nice to share, the goad, esp if Gramps has more Foo Fighters songs than I do.

Was also able to GS a few Nirvana songs and came close on others. I got 5 stars on all of them except for All Apologies, need to try that one again. I played with Road Rage + Blast Notes + Super Guitar. I also stopped trying to play as many notes on a track as I could and instead made sure I was leveling up each track to max (as best I could as some songs/tracks make it hard) and trying to hit all of the overdrive notes to power up the Road Rage.

This is sort of a non-sequitur. I was a at a concert tonight and one of the local opening acts (Sunny Side Up) has a few songs on RBN. I started talking to them about that and they say that their experience was quite lucrative. Said they got a decent deal from "That Authoring Group" and they've made "a few thousand dollars" across the 3 songs they have released. They're working on their first full album and are hoping to have it available on RBN in its entirety.

They're a ska band.

I wonder how truthful they're being about profitability because I know that that genre wouldn't sell as well as some others and if they're turning a decent profit having only released the songs in March, I can't imagine why we haven't seen more, bigger names on the service.

I know the userbase is bigger on the 360, and I'm sure having more RBN songs makes for more interest overall, but it seems kinda dead on the PS3. For instance, a kinda sloppy 96% medium guitar performance of a Jonathan Coulton song that had been out for a couple of weeks still placed me at #54 on the leaderboards. When I do even a little bit better on RBN songs, my scores are frequently in the top 25, and...well, I'm nowhere near good enough to be bragging right now. I can't help but think that PS3 RBN sales have gotta be pretty dismal.

As a PS3 player, I've got something around 1200 songs I believe and maybe 5 of those came from the RBN. The selection just isn't there (at least for me).

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

It didn't help that it took Harmonix forever to add the "preview" option to the RBN songs, so it was difficult to know what a large majority of the earlier stuff even sounded like. I'm sure that's why a lot of people don't have much of a RBN catalog.

That, plus most of the stuff they've released for PS3 isn't very good.

I actually like RBN. I haven't bought a whole lot recently but most of the last dozen or so tracks I've bought have been on RBN, bands that would most likely not be on the actual game or the 'main' store. The challenge is there's actually too much out there and it takes a very long time to browse on the 360. I like the concept a lot, if it could use some improvement in execution.
