I think EA would probably be the best case scenario for the multiplatform crowd. As far as I know, EA and Harmonix have a pretty solid relationship.

Microsoft seems like a good fit because of the success of Rock Band games on their consoles coupled with the fact that Harmonix is so skilled at innovation. They're a great feather to have in a console's cap, and especially if exclusivity were locked down, Harmonix could make for a strong differentiator to set the 360/future Xbox consoles apart from the competition. For those of us playing on the Wii or PS3, there are very obvious downsides.

It might also be appealing to a media company who sees Harmonix as a way to leverage their assets...Warner Bros. Interactive, maybe?

Activision might look at it as a way to kickstart their music-'n-games business again, although I think they'd stomp all over everything we love about Rock Band in the process.

Well, with all this talk, let's further ruin pinata's week.

DLC for 11/16

Spoiler:

The Bee Gees are coming to Rock Band 3. The iconic 1970s tight-pants disco trio is bringing six of their most famous tunes to Rock Band 3 as downloadable content, including, of course, pro versions of keyboard, bass, guitar and drums. Here are the tracks:
“Jive Talkin’”
“Night Fever”
“Stayin’ Alive”
“Nights on Broadway”
“Tragedy”
“You Should Be Dancing”
They will be available on November 16.

I doubt they have any interest in Harmonix.

It's going to be Activision or EA.

The Bee Gees should be a hit at my RB parties. For me, even if I don't like the music, it's all about the greater good.

You're not seeing the bigger picture. Apple has a relationship with all the record labels, so more opportunity and possibly greater ease in licensing tracks. Plus I could see Apple wanting to integrate things into iTunes, put packages together (Buy the new whoever album and get 3 Rock Band downloads), etc.

Only roadblock would be Microsoft. Cause those two don't exactly play nice.

Do those songs even have guitar parts?

I understand that, but I don't think the types of sales Harmonix has been seeing with both the game titles and the DLC will make it too interesting for them. Do they have any sort of current gaming investments besides stuff that is specific to the iPad/iPhone?

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I've thought about starting a thread in Music Talk or Movie Talk about this:
I would certainly put forth the assertion that Staying Alive is probably the best movie song since Over The Rainbow. It fills every criteria you could ask for a movie song : It's instantly recognizable, it's absolutely related to the film it's from both in theme and genre, it's tied to an iconic image or scene in that film, its popularity extended far after the film ended its run in theaters yet it will always be linked to its film of origin. It's an undeniable classic.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

After doing Funkytown in Dance Central, I want this DLC to be supported in both games!

I'm not a huge BeeGees fan, but I recognize fun party songs when I see them. Also, the Barry Gibb Talk Show theme would have been EPIC! Maybe we can get that with some "What's Up With that?"

And it's really only every other Friday I care about - the ones I have to go into work. I like the meetings broken up with news. Tomorrow, I'll just sleep in instead.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

From http://www.rockband.com/forums/showt...lling-Harmonix :

Hi Guys:

We’ve seen a lot of questions pop up in response to Viacom's statements this morning regarding their intention to sell Harmonix. We’ve posted this thread to respond to those questions. Please keep your forum conversations regarding this matter in this thread. We’ll check in throughout the day as we’re able.

This morning’s announcement does not affect the ongoing work at the studio as we continue to support our existing franchises, Rock Band and Dance Central. As stated earlier, Viacom is in discussions with several potential buyers and will continue to fully support the business until a sale is completed.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please post them in this thread. If you’re a member of the media with inquiry, you can reach out to us at [email protected]. (Please don’t email this address if you’re not from a press outlet).
Since there are several buyers in the mix, I guess they can't answer much since the conditions of the sale haven't been established.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

Was Viacom itself ever mentioned in DLC profit breakdowns? I can't remember if they got a direct cut or if it was just funneled through HMX's bottom line.

Reason I ask is that I wonder how that will affect existing DLC contracts and availability.

My vote's for "Goodbye Horses".

I'm not too much of a Bee Gees fan (though I do really like "How Deep Is Your Love?" for some reason), but I'll be getting at least "Staying Alive".

It should be EA (obvious choice) or Microsoft (Dance Central is key to their Kinect, may as well keep it exclusive)

I've got my fingers crossed for Guitar Hero: Rock Band.

I'm optimistic that it'll be a good to neutral event. I'd imagine that anyone who buys them likes what they see and wants it to continue; I don't think anyone will purchase them just to ruin a good thing.

How would you feel if it was named Rock Band: Guitar Hero? Or Rock Guitar: Band Hero? Or Rock Hero: Guitar Band? That one is kind of catchy.

I would boycott it under any of those other names. I have standards.

What if whoever published Powergig: Rise of the Six String takes all the money they made from that title and purchases Harmonix?

If we pooled our lunch money for a week, we'd be able to make a more compelling counter-offer.
