Similar games to Borderlands and Halo's?

i've been popping games in since i finished the 4 (3 Halo, Borderlands) (and yes, i know they are quite different in theme, but feeling for all were the same for me) and have been pretty disappointed because i was wanting the same feeling and desire to play like i did with the aforementioned games. Batman: AA, Gears of War 2, Modern Warfare 1, Half-Life 2 were all popped in for a bit, but i just either wasn't in the right mindset to play them or just wanted the same action like the 4. they are undoubtedly great games and i wish i had an affinity towards them from the start and it does disappointment me as you can imagine, but alas just didn't gravitate right away...

i am looking for games that can be single player and only a single character goes out on a trek during a good, main story campaign.

pick up and play, ample save opportunities, very addictive FPS where you can kill a lot of baddies in an action packed game that slowly progresses and objectives are linear and clear, where action is almost constant.

please help.

Half-Life 2

Try it again and stick with it - every single thing you say you're looking for is in HL2.

I suspect Fallout 3 may be too open and slow for Scott's tastes, based on the comments in the OP.

Yeah, I suppose the initial exploration wouldn't be as "persistent" as he'd require, though he could eventually fast-travel to the locations and speed things up.

 to Bioshock and Bioshock 2.

i actually just put BioShock in last night and only viewed the opening cinematic thus far, but i am fearing it may be too isolating and closed, similar to Dead Space, which i do like, but took that out because i wanted a more expansive world with a lot of bad guys all at once and you struggle to get through, but make it after a couple tries, Dead Space has the sporadic enemies all at once and then exploration, which don't get me wrong is great and the story highly immersive, but i want the openess as in Halo and Borderlands.

Half-Life 2 i was getting into, but it seemed dated to me and not as refined, if that makes sense. plus, i was just getting too frustrated with the one hand gun and shooting from a distance. then trial and error to find where i need to be, i don't have a map and paths weren't so clear that i needed to use a FAQ (which i hate doing) in the early goings.

as i mentioned before i think Fallout 3 might be too RPGish for me and not quite what i am looking for.

That's strange, because it's pretty linear, more linear than even the Halo games, though presented and masked in a way to not appear linear. Otherwise, the Modern Warfare, at least it's campaign, should also give you what you're looking for.

This. I liked all the games he mentioned in the OP but disliked Fallout 3 because it was so darn slow.

Scott,

One thing you'll find with gaming is that very rarely can you capture lighting in a bottle. I think if you take each game for what it is, instead of trying to replicate the same playing experience every time, you'll have much more fun and find it easier to get into new games.

For example, let's take Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption. At the DNA level, these games are 99% the same -- control schemes, approach to missions, etc. But when fully executed they are very different. For me personally, I liked GTAIV -- but I LOVE RDR. Other people have the opposite reactions -- some even hate one, and like the other!

The Darkness & Prey fit the description pretty well. Both solid, and both are ultra cheap.

Crackdown is a must as well.

^ i tried the demo of Crackdown and just didn't like it. Third person chaos and mayhem, didn't know half the time what the hell was going on with a lot of driving. not my taste.

Then

And then just replay all the Halos on Legendary until Borderlands 2 comes out sometime in 2011.

I'd stay out of there unless you want it spoiled.

I would also recommend Prey & COD2. Both can easily be picked up for less than $10.
