Why is it that a movie can gross $90 million and it's big news but a game does the same thing and it gets no mainstream coverage?

StarCraft 2 Expansion Packs: What We Know

.... Blizzard has confirmed that despite the size and the amount of work going into the campaigns, the company is viewing the Zerg and Protoss campaigns as expansion packs rather than additional games. Blizzard has seemingly stuck to the $30 price for all recent expansions, and while that could change, at the moment it seems accurate.

because games aren't as mainstream yet. give it another generation and they will be.

Re: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Mac & PC) - July 27th, 2010

I've been playing through the campaign and on battle.net, and i've already grown bored with the game. It's just not enough of a huge step up from the first game for me, which i've played the hell out of. A lot of the new units seem like the units they added for BroodWar - they're not very versatile. Also, even though the campaign has good production values, I've already dropped it. Even on the Veteran's difficulty level (which is really not that hard), the missions are just long and tedious, and I can understand why they limited the tech tree like in the first game, but new units/structures/tech are accessed too slowly for my tastes.

I guess it's not the fault of the game though. I was obsessed with the first game and still to this day play the hell out of it. I've seen some obscene mods for it too, like insane AI that will literally steamroll you into oblivion.

However, the balance is still there, even though some units may seem overpowered. Reapers, for instance, are costly and build slowly, so it's difficult to amass an army of them to annihilate your enemy's base; they're also very vulnerable to anti-infantry tactics. I could go on about strategy and tactics all day though.

I've played the original and bw so much i had to get glasses because of it. SC/BW was great not because of the units or weapons even though they were sweet it was that balance which was nearly at checkers/chess levels so i dunno how the balance stacks up in sc2 only time will tell, since it doesn't add much in the way of graphics which seem to be WoW style or races... i mean they could've added new races instead of the same 3 after all these years.

I didn't realize all these were in the game.

Well if you go by people who share the experience you have to take into account that probably 6 times as many people are watching a $90 million grossing movie versus playing the $90 million grossing game.

Re: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Mac & PC) - July 27th, 2010

Finished the campaign this weekend. Thoughts on the ending:

Spoiler:

Glad that we saved Kerrigan. Interesting that she is the key to everything, but they don't tell us WHY. Definitely ups my anticipation of the next installment. Damn Blizzard!

Expected Tychus's death. He was a good "bad" guy. Kind of reminded me of Jayne from Firefly. I was hoping they would redeem/rescue him but it worked the way they did it too.

The protoss missions were good, but it made me realize that the Terrans are my favorite species to play as. I'm looking forward to the storyline continuing in the next two expansions, but not really looking forward to playing as those species.

Does this game have the Protoss mind control ability? On paper that basically made the Protoss the greatest race since they could utilize all the races at once, although in execution many people on bnet who tried it but ended up getting their ass kicked since their core protoss race was underdeveloped while they were focusing on building their shiny empire and they were cut through like a warm knife through butter.

No, Zerg has the mind control power in SC2--"neural parasite" found on the infestor, though it has a 12-second limit.

I suppose you could have some fun building up the protoss tech tree in a casual game with friends, but you'll never see anything like that in standard play.

Oh i see so the time limit makes it pointless to control the enemy worker with the purpose of building a comman center?

You also don't get a new supply limit for the new race, so any Protoss units you build will count against your Zerg limit.

The balance is still there, even though it seems unbalanced at first. That's only because of the new units. Even massive units like the battlecruiser and carrier were toned down dramatically.

Starcraft as third-person zombie shooter.

Watch it here

The mod tools for this game are insane.

Free Character Name Change coming...

Free Character Name Change Coming Soon
by Blizzard Entertainment
Aug 16, 2010 3:56:59 PM UTC

We wanted to let everyone know that in the near future we'll be allowing everyone a chance to change their chosen StarCraft II character name for free.

In some cases, people chose character names that don't represent their usual multiplayer nicknames, as they were unaware of how the character names were being used. It's important to us that everyone is represented by a name of their choosing in their multiplayer games, ladders, and on the forums and community site.

In addition, beyond this initial free name change, we’ll be launching a service similar to the one we offer for World of Warcraft which will allow additional character name changes for a fee. We'll announce more details on how the free name change and additional paid character name changes will be implemented in the near future.

Re: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Mac & PC) - July 27th, 2010

I'm back in the game. It's fun how much the dynamics of the game shift constantly when new techniques are implemented, and then how quickly people adapt to them. I've seen people spam the hell out of certain races and just get their asses kicked.

The only bad thing is that when you're pitted in team matches, you have no control of the quality of your team mates unless you pick and choose them. Most people playing this game honestly suck.

I suck at Starjeweled. Also, the rounds are way too long.

I got a score of 66, which I didn't even know you could do until the 3rd time I watched it today.
