I'm not sure that I care for it. I played for a little over an hour... and I'm going to bed.

So far, it seems much slower than Civ IV (but that may be because my laptop is running it slower). I played for about 2 hours and got through 100 turns. In that time, I only founded one city (in addition to my starter) and only built half a dozen units and half a dozen buildings. I think at an equivalent point in Civ IV, I'd have four or five cities and be pumping out buildings and units.
I don't dislike it, but it hasn't blown me away either.

The city states just take up every space I would normally build another city.
I do really like the tech tree for the type of civilization you have though, definitely will allow you to focus more on your style of play.

One thing I did like was how it automatically opened and linked my game to Steam, since that's my preferred platform, and I was always upset I bought the disk version of Civ IV and couldn't easily get the expansions through Steam, with their constant sales.

I had heard that Civ V will actually run on integrated graphics cards, so just for shits and giggles I installed it on my laptop which has integrated graphics. It actually ran at a decent framerate at the lowest settings but it was ugly as hell. The cloudy fog of war was replaced by huge black columns.
I haven't played it much yet, so I can't really accurately judge the game yet, but so far I like Civ IV slightly better. The combat in V is much improved. I absolutely hated the stack of doom combat. On the other hand, I don't think Civ V is really designed for building massive empires with dozens of cities. Each city now gives unhappiness automatically, taking over enemy cities gives unhappiness, and roads have upkeep costs now. Also the best way for rapid expansion previously was slavery by whipping your people for massive production boosts. I haven't found anything yet in Civ V like slavery that was designed for rapid expansion.

I'm pretty sure when it has the button up to "End Turn" you can just hit enter.
Also, I set mine to auto-end my turn when I have moved all units. Then if I want a unit to simply sit there I can hit the space bar to have it skip it's turn. This lets me space bar through all the units I have out (to check orders) and once I have done all that the turn auto-ends.
I <3 the new social policy things. I was getting a huge kick out of having Bismark the Pious. He focused on Honor and Piety in his country... and had the Mandate of God perk.

Oh I know. But that was added for Civ IV (I think) and the space bar to end turn is really old-school Civ. Just seems pointless to take it out when all it's going to do is annoy people like me that have been playing Civ for over 15 years.

I played Civ 1 and 2 to death. Skipped 3 for some reason (just kept playing 2). And then didn't get into Civ 4 till last year.
So far this year has just been all kinds of nostalgia for me.
New Civ.
New Starcraft.
New Halo game that reminds me heavily of Halo 2.

I guess the stupid AI quirks will never change. Trying to get me to trade all my gold, open borders, and ALL my extra resources for just one of theirs! And then telling me I'M being unreasonable...

Does anybody do this on a dual boot Mac? I know Steam is PC only, but my gf really wants to play on her Mac.

After playing through the demo 3 times in a row, I had no choice but to pick this up through Steam last night. I started a game on a huge map with only 6 civilizations. 300 turns and about 6 hours later, I've taken control of the continent I started on by wiping out Russia. They had many more cities than I did but hadn't researched gunpowder yet. My riflemen and artillery cannons had no trouble walking through and annexing their cities. This game will probably take me a week to finish.

Are you saying though that, yes, Civ V can run on a dual-boot Mac?

How do these steam cloud save games work. I played for 5 hours on my desktop last night and created 2 save games on steam cloud. When I went to play this morning, my 2 month old desktop decided to not boot. I installed the game on my laptop and went to load my game but the was nothing u der the steam cloud.
I have the retail version, but it easily installed into my steam account.

Well I meant to hit TV talk (and thought that's where I was) and was confused about why there was a Civ V thread.
The good news is I was wondering WTH I was going to get my hubby for his birthday on Thursday and you all solved that problem!

Civilization still has the same addictive quality it did back in the day. I started a game Saturday morning at around 9 (huge random map, all countries included), played until the game concluded at around 2 the next morning. I took time out to eat and watch a little TV, but mainly I played that damn game! I've forced myself to leave it alone since then...

Re: OMG Civilization V is Coming Fall 2010
So the Mac version has been released now and apparently has a slew of problems. Anyone have this version? I'm still looking to get this for my gf for xmas. I've read that the anti-piracy measures are run by Steam. Does this mean everytime she boots up she has to connect to steam (ie be online)? Does this also mean that she can run the game without the disk?
Thanks.
Thanks.
