Ok, now with the USB thing for use on the 360. I have a question:

I have 2 360 consoles, 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs. I have a gold account on my main console (it is tied to my Gamertag, correct?). So, if I move my Gamertag to a USB drive, can I take my Gamertag upstairs and stream Netflix to that console or is Netflix tied to the console somehow?

Sorry, I missed the first response....oops. So, you do not have to activate Netflix on each system....yeah.

Now, if I can just improve my streaming from my PC to my 360 upstairs.

Also...since I never tried. Can a 360 read a 60GB External HDD just to play movies off of? What are the formats a 360 handles these days anyways?

Yes, the 360 can. The format handles best are avis. However, if you format the HD to HFS+ you can "get" WMV-HDs which support 5-1 surround and 1080p. Yes the 360 recognizes HDs formatted to a mac only file system. WMV HDS can run over 7 gigs and HFS+ is the only format that the 360 recognizes which supports files that large.

I was in BB today just looking around and they had the new 250gb HD out. I was surprised to see it has the 'transfer Kit" inside. But I'm looking at the new drive with transfer kit at $129 while the 60gb HD Starter Kit is still at $100. They're going to drop the price on that 60gb sometime and it'll have to be more than $10. Anyone hear of a price drop coming for all those 60gb HD out there?

I know this quesiton has been asked a ton but if I just transfer my Elite hard drive to my Arcade system upstairs will everything work correctly? Or would it be easier to just use a 16GB USB drive to store my profile and game saves on?

If your Arcade is connected to the internet then the answer to both those questions is "yes".

As long as you're signed in to Xbox Live you won't see a difference at all. I think the thumb drive option is a little more portable though.

I thought there were some issues in the past if you just tried to move your Hard Drive from one console to another that some features didn't work...like XBLA or something like that. I thought Netflix was one of the issues with that. Now, apparently based on answers here, you can just put your GamerTag on a flash drive and use that from console to console. Although, you would have to redownload XBLA and other games, correct?

pinata242 04-13-10 12:39 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

If you're connected to XBL, you can play anything you've ever bought on any console in the world.

Obviously you have to have the game downloaded (or on the flash drive) to play it.

DJ_Longfellow 04-13-10 12:42 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Thanks....now, let's say you move JUST the Gamertag to a Flashdrive, could you make a copy of that Flashdrive on your PC and have the flashdrive plugged into both 360's in my house?

The 360 in my bedroom is used for media, and this would me to watch Netflix without having to carry around a flashdrive.

pinata242 04-13-10 12:56 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Only one of them can be connected to XBL at a time, rendering the other invalid. That's why XBL connectivity is required, so you can't share your gold account and all it's privileges.

That being said, now that the PS3 and the Wii have Netflix streaming, I wonder when Microsoft will remove the gold account requirement?

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

That's a good question but something tells me that it won't work. If you have the profiles on two different devices it would get out of sync.

DJ_Longfellow 04-13-10 02:45 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Sounds good. Now, lets say I make a copy of it, but I never have them on at the same time. I'm assuming they would just be out of sync and it would not work....

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Truthfully, I don't know the answer to that as it hasn't been possible before the USB option since you cannot copy a profile, only move it.

Before you could move your profile to a MU, remove the MU, and then recover your profile from the XBL servers. Now you have 2 copies of the profile.

However, if you tried to sign into XBL on the original (MU) profile, you'd get a message saying it was recovered elsewhere and the profile wasn't usable online. I assume MS adds some sort of version/recovery-count increment when you pull it from them. If it doesn't match with their records when you sign in, it won't work.

Now you're talking about actually having an identical copy of the same, versioned profile in 2 places. This hasn't been done. It may work, it may not. If it does work, it may cease once one of the profiles changes in a way that Microsoft notices. Could be as simple as a new achievement, new game played, or any activity at all. When you go back to the other one and regress any progress made elsewhere, they may notice.

My advice is don't try it. We don't know all the ways they monitor profiles beyond simple singleton authentication.

Agreed, my son has his Gold account on an MU, and thought the only option was move. Did they change that with the USB update? I'd think they would still only allow a move, rather than a copy for just the reasons you specified.

No, you can still only "move" a profile. But if the profile is on a USB drive, you can copy the USB drive to a PC and restore it later. So it would go like this:

Move profile to USB
Copy USB contents to PC
Move profile from USB back to 360 HDD
Copy USB contents from PC back to USB

Maybe they will include the original as an Arcade release or bonus in the limited edition or something. That would save it some, but yeah this has no business being a first person shooter.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Is anyone using PS3 MEDIA SERVER to stream files to their 360? I have it set up on my PC and my hardwired PS3 works fine, and I have a hardwired 360 that works fine, but I also have a 360 in my bedroom and the streaming stutters often.

My setup is as follows:
WRT54G router on main computer. I have it hardwired to a 2nd WRT54G that is set up as a wireless access point (it is closer to my upstairs 360). I have a Wireless N adapter on my 360 (I got it cheap), but I realize I'm only using G speeds.

Anyways, my SIGNAL on the 360 upstairs is all 3 bars on the 360 Network config. Although, I still receive the stuttering...any suggestions?

I was thinking of upgrading 1 of my routers to a D-LINK DIR-655 (or something comparable), and then shutting off the wireless on my other router and just use it as a switch. I'm curious if the Wireless N would really help....

Or, are there settings on the PS3 media server to tweak?

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

What kind of content are you streaming? 720p should work ok but 1080p material will probably stutter over wireless.

Depends on files size mainly, but Rule of thumb is 1080p over wireless is too much.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

When it's stuttering for me I just use the transcoded version, and that always works fine, wireless. Each folder should have a transcode folder, that contains the same files but they are transcoded. At least that's the case for my PMS running on linux.

DJ_Longfellow 04-15-10 01:03 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

I've been streaming some 720 content. The thing that really stutters are DVD movies that are located in a VIDEO_TS folder. I'll try the TRANSCODE folder to see if that works better.

If not, I may upgrade my network to Wireless N

Decadance 04-15-10 01:11 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

AVI(most) and WMV(all) need no transcoding. MKVs can be easily streamed over Windows Media Center now. If you are a windows person, there is virtually no need for 3rd party software now. And a 1080p WMV-HD file will be around 6-12gigs depending on sound compression and movie length, and it will definitely stutter over wireless, and there is no transcoding needed.

Hmmm, I never bothered with WMC. I wonder if I should set it up for my XBOX. I played around with it in the past, but never bothered to set it up. I'm assuming you just have to assign folders that you want to share in it?

Sweet! I just won 400 points from Dr Pepper with the new Iron Man 2 promotion. I was hoping to win one of the 5 Million Premium themes they're giving away for 7th Prizes, but won one of 100 400 Point codes for 8th Prize. Strange. Anyway, nice promo and I predict I'll be grabbing a lot of free Diet Dr Pepper from the hospital these next two months. :)

After I win my first Premium theme (which I hope is an Iron Man 2 theme, not a Dr Pepper one), I'll give away any further winning theme codes in this thread.

I should modify what I said a little. MKV streaming via WMC is seamless if you are a Windows 7 user. I seem to recall it may have some issues on Vista (cannot recall for certain).

I got a Dr Pepper Iron Man 2 theme, but it looks like it's just a Premium ad for the soda:
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wjY90h11HS0&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wjY90h11HS0&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

I'll have more codes for these if anyone wants one.

Speaking of Dr Pepper Premium themes, apparently this Dr Pepper theme is actually the regular Battlefield Bad Company 2 Premium theme that they're charging 240 points for. I can't check it out now, but someone else could.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

So I had a red ring of death in my Elite last night.

I hadn't used my Elite in a couple of weeks or so, so it hasn't been updated with the latest firmware. It's connected to a projector, through a HDMI switch, it's not a complicated setup but it's not simple either. So I turn it on, and I get sound but no video. I try different workarounds and finally decide to try to turn it off and turn it on again to see if it works. No luck. And somehow I can't even turn it on with my controller anymore. So I unplugged from the back and plug it back again, finally! It works, that's when I see that I need to install the new firmware, so I do that. Everything goes perfect.

I start playing The Saboteur. I mean, I load the Saboteur. It loads the game the fine, continues from my last save. So I'm in the game, and have to open a door, to open a new map, it shows a loading screen and bam! almost like an explosion, the Xbox 360 turns off and shows me the three red lights. I'm speechless, I can't believe it. I have never had a red ring of death. So, just to be 100% sure I check the three red lights that are on and go to wikipedia if that's really an RROD, and yeah, it is. So I start reading the description and reach this part:

This error code is usually caused by failure of one or more hardware components, although it can indicate that the console is not receiving enough power from the power supply, which can either be due to a faulty power supply or if the power supply cable is not fully inserted into the console.
Wait, since the Elite is in entertainment shelf and it's hard to reach the back of it, let's see if I really inserted the power cord all the way in. Yeah, it was not fully inserted. So I push until I hear a click and try again, it works!!!

So yeah, I'm dumb and was already thinking on what kind of console I was going to get to replace it.

Decker 04-16-10 02:04 PM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

That's funny. I've never heard of that error message before. Of course now you've jixed yourself and a RRoD is probably just around the corner.
