Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
It gets a lot easier. Although, it's sometimes frustrating because you don't know if your particular method is doing anything to the boss.

Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
Right. That's why I think the enemies/bosses need Lifebars.

Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
I just caught up to you Robo and am basically playing the demo.
Playing this part of the game is a very different experience having gone through the 3-4 hours of "tutorial" levels and having some idea what I'm doing. Guys that were kicking my ass in the demo are on the verge of being easy. I'd say generally that if you were turned off by the difficulty of the demo, the game is still very much worth checking out. Personlly, I'm loving the game. The story is cooler than I expected, and I'm really digging the mix of combat and Zelda-style dungeons. I actually think I'm enjoying it more than God of War III. It's nowhere near the same level of polish, but the variety is welcome. |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
Well yeah like I said, I was very much enjoying this game up until Tiamat. But now that I'm passed her I'm starting to like it again. I think the story and characters are very cool and the general style of the game is great too.

Beat Tiamat last night. Getting that first bomb on her and then linked up with the fire was a real PITA, but after that, it was pretty straightforward...crossblade...keep your distance...dash...quicktime...smack a bitch...done.

Yeah rub it in. I know I suck at gaming. |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
Yeah, I don't remember having any trouble with Tiamat. I think I died a few times, but after running around and just watching her routine, I had no problem. Sorry Giantrobo.
Do you use the sidestep button? I know I personally forget about it in many games, but I remember finding it quite useful in Darksiders. |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
I don't want to minimize. The first phase of Tiamat sucked big time.
I fought the second big boss this morning, and it was much easier. |

I was still getting hit and losing life and couldn't last long enough to kill her. So by the time I reached the 2nd or 3rd stage of the fight, I didn't have enough life to try close up attacks. I started double dashing to widen the distance and running one way then switching directions so her projectiles(fireballs) went the opposite way. |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
Confirmed...one more asshole of a boss.
Robo, when you get to the second spider boss (there are two of them) head straight to youtube. Even knowing what to do, it's pretty cheap. Damn, I love this game. It's like a mix-tape of 10 different awesome games. |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
OH man, thanks!

Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
I think I'm getting close to the endgame...like every 3D Zelda, they've gone with a fetch quest at the end.
I'm still loving the game. It's scratching my Zelda itch in a big way, and it has inspirations from tons of great games. I'm also really enjoying the art design (aside from the protagonist) and sound design. Even the story is more interesting than I would have guessed. It's even kind of fun to look for stuff from other games, and they are cool about how they apply their inspirations. They don't seem to be trying to hide it at all, and it plays like more of a tribute than a ripoff. Stuff I've noticed: Zelda - The structure of the game, puzzles, dungeons, overworld and menus...not to mention boomerang, horse, bomb and hookshot mechanics...tons more. God of War - Combat and climbing mechanics, enemies, opening chests, quicktime kills (but not overdone), souls and rage meter, weapon and move upgrades Devil May Cry - The sword/gunplay and how enemies appear through portals Prince of Persia - Navigation and time mechanics Shadow of the Colossus - Some character designs and bosses reminded me of it Portal - It's even blue/orange, and the puzzles are pretty good! Overall, if you like Zelda and/or God of War, I heartily recommend it. I'm in early for the sequel! |

<--- Hates when people quote my typos. ;)
In fairness to me, it was pretty much the first game released this year...which was all I was getting at. :) |

Both of those were probably better games, but they both had a head start by being sequels. I'm trying to think if there's anything else I've played this year that I would put ahead of Darksiders and nothing else is coming to mind (but with Alan Wake and Red Dead in the next few weeks, I'm sure that will change). |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
I said it before, and I will say it again, the very last 10 seconds of this game gave me chills...

Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
Hard to resist that spoiler for some reason...hopefully I'll get it finished tonight.
You know, I've always been surprised that more games haven't coopted the Zelda "formula" over the years. Sure, Nintendo has done it to death, but it's still pretty much the pinnacle of game design and has been for ~30 years. Last generation, we got Okami and Beyond Good and Evil, both of which are highly regarded games, and both are pretty much Zelda. And of course we now have 3D Dot Game Heroes coming out and Darksiders, which freshens the formula with improved combat. Two games that you may not be aware of that I recommend if you're like me and love the formula: Crystalis - NES Zelda clone that is in many ways closer to Link to the Past than it is to the original. It's not on Virtual Console (day 1 purchase for me when it is), and it's even a bit wonky in emulation, but it's still well worth playing. Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy - PS2/Xbox/GCN game that you could probably get for $5-10. I can't recommend this one highly enough. Again, very much a Zelda game, but the puzzles in the Mummy portions of the game really put it over the top. |
Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
As I posted a few pages back, I had problems with Darksiders in the middle of the game, when I was going around collecting things...and I felt the combat got a little easy once you got past the initial learning curve, and got a few upgrades...but when the game was actually in the "zelda" zone it was fantastic...and the finally 2 hours kicked serious ass....I will purchase the second game day one...

Re: Darksiders (PS3/360)...Bring on the Apocalypse!!
I finished last night, and it's official...I absolutely adore this game! It's the "greatest hits" album of video games, and it's fucking brilliant.
Yeah, the game's not really doing much new, but neither has a Zelda or God of War in about as long as I can remember. Or maybe successfully blending those two franchises is an achievement to be commended in and of itself...and maybe that IS something new. And giving Link a portal gun was inspired. Art: I wish War didn't look so silly, because all of the other art design in the game is among the best I've seen. Story: Much better than I expected and with a really strong ending Level design: Maybe not quite Zelda, but not far off. Great variety...the standout being the desert level IMO (Tremors FTW!). Characters: Some real standouts...Samael, Azrael, Ulthane, Uriel and especially Vulgrim ("Take your time...oh, you liiike that?") Bosses: On par with Zelda...somewhat tougher in a "wrestling with the camera" kind of way. And yeah, the ending was bad ass! "Not alone." @ JasonF...my early frontrunner for Game of the Year. ( ;) ) I enjoyed it more than GoWIII. But it's early and SMG2 is on the way. |
