The saga continues, playing Halo 3 for the first time. yay.

so as many know i just got a new XBOX 360 for early X-Mas and have yet to play a game. i have some time off and got two games ready to be played. i am rather undecided as to what should be my first foray into the FPS genre.

i am a very old-school gamer who yearns for more and know i am missing out on a totally incredible genre. i have lightly played others before and didn't get into them. i am looking to change that by slowly making head way into FPS's. i don't plan on owning too many and probably limit to these 2 and maybe more later if i am totally blown away, but at least light for now so as to not get too overwhelmed.

but, to get me started and learn slowly, what would you recommend being the advanced gamers most of you are...

do i pop in the older school "Halo: Combat Evolved" originally for XBOX with possibly easier FPS controls, less outstanding graphics and responsiveness or jump right into one of the pinnacles of the genre thus far with "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2"?

if you could understand my position: low to medium level gamer, non-FPS skilled who gets better with games given time...what would you play for the first time ever?

thanks for advice.

DOOM 3. Great horror fps. The graphics still stand out today. Creepy environments that made me jump quite a few times.

So you bought a console only to go back in time and play a game from the past?

Panzer Dragoon Orta came out in 2003, not 1994.

Not a true FPS, but I don't really care, now, do I?

Another question that should have been in the general X-Box thread.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

I voted Halo. The story will suck you in and likely get you to want to play 2, 3 and ODST (and Reach when it comes out in 2010). Then you'll be in for a treat with MW2 and the * to the wall action and graphics.

that is what i am thnking as well. start with the older, take it all in for what it was in the day and will be to me now, and work my way to the newer and be blown away by the awesomeness.

re: Just played Halo, now Halo 2 for the first time!

Halo... just don't expect it to look/feel like a 360 game.

Also, I'd say if your into Sci Fi Military action to pick up the original trilogy of Halo books as well.

That said, MW2 is a much more impressive game, but from what you describe about your interests, I would start with Halo.

Also, why only 2 games? Seriously, you don't plan on getting many more? Look for deals, check out CAG and some of the other sites, no reason to limit to 2, when you can get them cheap, and you have an amazing library of games that have price dropped significantly that you can check out.

I don't think it matters. Play whatever is more appealing to you. I don't think there's a big difference as to what should be your "first" foray into FPS games on a console.

I wouldn't bother trying to play any Xbox games on the 360, IMO it's not a great experience. ymmv
If you want to play Halo I would get Halo 3 or ODST.

I second this, I've had my 360 for about a year and have only finished 3 games to completion:

Oblivion
Fable 2
Dragon Age: Origins

Today I picked up Fallout 3: GotY Edition

Not Halo. They are passable FPS games at best. I still don't understand the mania.

same reason I loved playing Crackdown, even though if I really think about it, the game is full of flaws

...any game that makes you feel like a bad-ass, while still challenging you, will suck me and my childhood-superhero-fantasy ass in....Why dream of being a superhero when I can play one on tv...

The Halo games happen to also be well made masterpieces. The games feel like one great moment after another...the music is maybe the best ever done in a video game (sorry Final Fantasy 6) and I love the direction the story arc took.

Its also fun being a 7 foot bad-ass who can drop a 500 pound alien with one punch, jump 10 feet in the air and enter a planet's orbit in just his suit and survive like he is Chuck Norris....

The thing about Halo that got me was the story, music, and setting. I'm a big sci-fi buff and LOVE the atmosphere. That being said, Modern Warfare 2 has better gameplay all around.

I think if you play MW2 first and then Halo, you'll feel like Halo is a major step back. Then again, start with halo and play MW2 and you'll wonder why the f*@% you keep dying so much!

He's probably thinking of Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn, which came out in 1998 and is one of the rarest North American game in existance (not including cartridges from Challenges and other weird things). Goes for well over $150 on eBay.

Panzer Dragoon Orta is a great sequel to this game.

Or he could be thinking of the original Panzer Dragoon, which came out in 1995 and is actually unlockable in Orta.

Never understood all the love for Halo. I would go with MW2 out of those 2 choices.

I think it makes sense to start with Halo and work through the story, which is very involving. By the time you're through the saga, Modern Warfare will probably have dropped in price.

Dude, I used to do this. Have several games but only play one at a time.

Start playing both and believe me, one or the other will blow you away and you'll find yourself playing the one that does more than the other one.

Let the games decide.
