Honestly, a great first game for the 360 would be Mass Effect. Still my favorite RPG of this gen without a doubt (Until Final Fantasy 13 comes out that is).

Starting with Halo 1 is silly. No multiplayer and the story could be gleaned from a wiki page. It is also last generation and a bad introduction to your new system.
Start with Halo 3 or Modern Warfare 2. Personally i would go with MW2 since it has a decent single player and an active online community for you to sample the multiplayer.
Mass Effect and Fallout 3 were both terribly dull games imo.

I am not a big FPS person, but I loved:
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Borderlands
Basically because they were all single player or co-op (and the first two have awesome stories and milieus.)
CoD 4: MW had a great story, and both MW1/MW2 are apparently superb in the realm of online competitive play, which is not my main interest.
Either one, though, and you should be prepared for getting schooled quite often when you play online.
I would not recommend Mass Effect as an intro to an FPS. It is very slow paced and the squad control adds a level of clunkiness to it that can be distracting if you're just trying to learn an FPS.
If your only choices are Halo 1 or MW2, I'd definitely say MW2, esp. if your gaming time is limited.
After playing Halo 3, I got Halo 1 and got about twenty minutes into it. It seemed like going back and didn't do much for me.
I wouldn't think controls would be that big an issue - don't most FPSes have similar controls (unless they are "FPSplus" like Fallout or Bioshock)?

I'd be down with this. Although they're 3rd person
I thought Doom 3 was fairly mediocre. It still looks pretty good, but I think there are far better games out there to try out.

I would highly recommend against it. It's terribly repetitive and the monster closets joke rings very true. The one thing it really had going for it at release, the graphics, are still good but unimpressive when compared to the latest fps games.

Serious Sam HD!
Actually I don't see any reason to skip the first Halo. Slap it on Easy and run through it in a few hours, especially if you already bought it. Starting with Halo 3 or MW2 and then going back to play the older games will be rough. Plus Halo teaches you how to play while all the sequels and CoD games assume you already know how to play a first person shooter.

Halo: Combat Evolved was the first!!!
from XBOX thread:
from XBOX thread:
just played my first game ever on XBOX 360. it was an original XBOX game, Halo, for about 1.5 hours.
gorgeous to look at, smooth in control and i could actually play it. first FPS game ever as well. didn't get too much of a headache either.
i only got to the first part where you crash land and then have to evade the Covenant and then go inside the structure with the Warthog and go over the bridge, come out then search for survivors. find them and protect them and wait for the air ships. but, it was a blast. absolute blast. i like that it isn't in your face and you can breath and search and then get bombarded, but if you take your time, use the back of the Warthog and shoot the shit out of aliens, you can make it to the next level.
just a blast!!

just normal. usally play on normal. didn't want to puss out my first time with easy.
i got my ass handed to me more than a few times, but when i get the whole run and gun mentality out of my head an realize this and probably most FPS nowadays is be patient, look for cover and then shoot i'll be alright.
i started to realize and did a lot better. the one thing i was having difficulty with is knowing exactly where to go. i know the HUD shows the triangles for nav points of where to go (not to mention the little gal in my head), but they seemed few and far between. the HUD pulsates and not sure what that means. of course i realize it shows friendly's and enemies, but no real direction of where to go next. minor gripe though and i am sure i will figure it all out.
even still, just beautiful and have never seen a game look like it in my life. i mean Metroid Prime looked good on Gamecube, but forget about it. this is leagues...and just to know that i can finally get into FPS as i was always weary of them in the past because i thought it was too complicated or felt i would be too overwhelmed, but with Halo 1 and the demo of Riddick: Dark Athena i look to the future with re-newed optimism.
and yeah, i know i will be blown away by the next-gen games. that is why i want to start old school and then work my way to the shock and awe of MW2 or any of the 13 or so new games i bought in two weeks.
i usually like to stick with one game until completion or absolute frustration at a time, but may stick CoD:MW2 in just for curiosity sake and morbidly go through the infamous airport scene!
also, may think of skipping Halo 2, just so i can get to the next gen in Halo 3, but maybe not such a great idea. i just heard that H2 is nothing real new and it is still old XBOX and that H3 ties it all up nicely and of course next-gen.
but, bottomline, really really enjoyed this first experience and it has given me that urge (i am sure you all know that itch) to pop it in at a whim like i did with Gamecube games of old like Metroid, RE4, and Eternal Darkness.
and now that i am into it and actually using the damn thing, i promise the questions will subside!!!!!

Please do not skip Halo 2. It has a lot of great action scenes throughout and the story delves deeper into the Halo universe more so than Halo 1 and 3.

Play Halo 2...I found it better than Halo 1...and the only problem is it leaves you hanging..which is not a problem since you can then plop Halo 3 right in.
Halo 1 suffers a bit from "where the hell do I go" and a lot of that is the bland backgrounds at times...

Please come back and let us know what you thought of the level "343 Guilty Spark"...it is has a flash back sequence leading up to the best part of the game......I always envy people who get to experience it for the first time...

RE: Halo 1
is it me or are there not a lot of health packs in the beginning levels and even if i see 2, is it so that i can only pick up one at a time?
they just don't seem to be at the places i need them...

You can only pick it up if you need 1 at the time (i.e. less than 100% health). And yes, you may have to do some backtracking here and there, depending on ammo/health pack needs, etc.

re: Just played Halo, now Halo 2 for the first time!
any advice for killing these Hunters?
i am in "The Belly of the Beast" and in the two open rooms with the big energy shield there. i fight swarms of grunts and elites and barely make it with very little health. then the Hunters come and i am toast and have to start from the last checkpoint which is before fighting the swarms.
i know the Hunters are toguh, but how to easily strafe and get behind them to beat them?
help please.

it has been a long time, but one thing I know for sure, is a sniper rifle is your friend, and you don't need to zoom in. That room is tight if I can remember, just line up your sniper without zooming in and blast away.

re: Just played Halo, now Halo 2 for the first time!
thanks. actually the area i am in, and i am probably not describing it right, is wide open. i have very few sniper shells too and would be hard to get in the open and get from the dead Marines.
