Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
My 360 has been collecting dust since I started playing Demon's Souls. That's just fucking unheard of for me... if you had asked me a month ago what the chances my GOTY would be a PS3 game the answer would have been 0%.
There is no question in my mind it is -easily- the best game released in 2009...too bad more people don't know it. Oh well, the best things are usually missed by the mainstream. Maybe this is a sign of the VG industry finally 'maturing'. |

Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
I also had very little screen tearing in Uncharted 2. Big improvement over the first running @ 720p.
Demons Souls is definitely in my top 10 for '09 but I did have to stick with my overall favorite (MW2). The production values of Uncharted 2 won me over despite its rather tired/uninspired gameplay and level structure as well. |
Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
Borderlands. This game completely took me by surprise. It wasn't on my radar at all. I had never even heard of the game before it was released. I got it for christmas and have put 35 hours into it so far. it is very rare for me to play a game that long.

Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
on another note, isn't it kind of funny the killzone 2 is not being mentioned at all. it was one of the most hyped games i can remember.

Some other years, it might have gotten notice. Nothing at all wrong with that game, it's very good actually, but #1 it came out way back in Feb, and even great games from the Summer (like InFamous and Red Faction are getting forgotten) and #2 these days it takes more than a proficient, nice-looking FPS to get folks' attention any more. Don't forget, nobody is mentioning Halo ODST either, and that's another fine FPS.

I found Killzone 2 to be pretty underwhelming. I didn't love Halo 3: ODST, but I'd sooner choose that over Killzone 2.

Whatever, multiplayer whore. ODST was great. :)
The hub world on the other hand was dark and completely empty of anything. You would walk down streets that were nigh indistinguishable from one another past buildings that for the most part you couldn't enter. You might stumble upon a small group of enemies to have 3 minutes of action. Then you continue wandering around. It was stupid. That added to how dark the game was. Of course people try to talk about the great story of the game. Fine, but they took the story and hid it from the player in all the recordings you had to find. Humorously enough... that was all there was to the story. It was like Bungie misunderstood what Bioshock did and forgot to put in the story for those who didn't find all the recordings. One of the only games i have bought in recent memory where i genuinely felt cheated. |
Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
Am I the only Killzone fan? I look back on the single-player campaign rather fondly, and would play it again in a heartbeat if it wasn't for my insane back-log. I also enjoyed the multi-player a lot - more so than CoD4 & 5, though not quite as much as MW2.

Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
I only played the single-player mode of Killzone 2. It was fine, but nothing too memorable for me. I did love the PSP Killzone game though, much more than I did Killzone 2.

Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
I thought Killzone 2 was worth playing though once, but I don't know if I would go through it again. Never touched MP though.

Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
While I appreciate the technical aspects of Killzone 2 ( ), the whole aesthetic just completely turns me off...just like CoD and HALO.
The last thing I want to do is spend time with a bunch of douchenugget NPCs who do nothing but get on my nerves. Scratch that...the LAST thing I want to do is spend time online with a bunch of real-life douchenuggets who do nothing but get on my nerves. There's nothing like wanting to shoot the people on your team more than you want to shoot the enemy! Did Killzone 2 have a co-op campaign? That might be interesting. |

Everyone can let out their breath, I picked up Uncharted 2 today.

The only legit complaint is that the game was all black and gray in the color palette, but hell you could lodge the same complaint at Gears of War. |

You're just barely beyond the "tutorial" levels, so that's a good sign, as you're about to get into some really interesting stuff.
In fact, there's one last tutorial bit, namely how to "run and gun" which is right at the beginning of Ch 5. Take note, because you'll need to know how to do it later in the game. |

Re: 2009 Game of the Year (GOTY) thread
The above lists is what happens when a staff has one or two people who cover games. You get a top-10 list with Wolfenstein on it. I don't think I want to live in a world where Boom Blox is better than Batman. I own both, but...really??? I'm also not sure about a world where Punchout is between Batman and Uncharted.
I'm not saying that there's a definitive top-10, as different folks have different tastes, but I'd take my chances with our big 6: Uncharted 2 Batman Borderlands Beatles Dragon Age CoD |
